The hype surrounding the selection process intensified ever since Lagaan came to bringing an award home. This year a host of Bollywood biggies were considered as contenders. However it seems Marathi film director Sandeep Sawant’s film Shwaas was eventually chosen as India’s entry. The film revolves around a grandfather (Arun Nalawade) who brings his grandson (Ashwin Chitale) to the town hospital. The grandson has to undergo life-threatening surgery that could also take away his eyesight if he survives. The film covers the emotions the grandfather goes through when he has to decide if he should go-ahead with the surgery. The film won this year’s National Award and also a special performance award for Ashwin Chitale.
