Sequels have to be better than the original to create the required impact. And that is something that producer Vinod Chopra set out to do before he embarked on the second in the series on Munnabhai.
Sanjay Dutt as Munnabhai in MBBS created magic along with Arshad Warsi as Circuit. Clearly that film was a winner all the way. Lage Raho is not left far behind.
Munna has now fallen in love with a radio jockey's voice… Jhanvi (Vidya Balan) anchors a show called Good Morning Mumbai for a radio station and Munna starts off the day with her and ends it with her too when she says good night. As far as we know top RJs work in just four hour shifts.
Cinematic liberty pardoned, like in the earlier version where he took the help of another doctor to misrepresent him in his exams, director Rajkumar Hirani copies from his earlier screenplay as Munna this time takes the help of some professors to answer a quiz on Gandhi to enable him meet Jhanvi.
Jhanvi likes him as he pretends to be a professor of history and takes him home as well. Her residence doubles up as an old age home as well and Munna is called to deliver a lecture on Mahatma Gandhi there. But before that he has to learn a lot more on Gandhi and with just five days left, he gets into a library and start reading up on the man who got India independence.
He meets Gandhi there as well… Gandhi advises him on certain things and promises to help him out in wining his love in return for Munna speaking the truth…
Munna makes an impression but is unable to reveal his true identity to Jhanvi.
Meanwhile a selfish builder Lucky Singh (Boman Irani) who wants the old age home gets Munna to take Jhanvi away to Goa and usurps the place.
Munna is unable to convince Lucky and then takes the help of Gandhi to solve his problem.

Resorting to non violent means he puts up along with the other old men and Jhanvi opposite Lucky's house and wants him to mend his ways. He also co-hosts the radio show with Jhanvi and tells people to send flowers to Lucky asking him to mend his ways….
Lucky meanwhile is trying to get is daughter (Diya Mirza) married off and in the process lies a lot…
What follows is a series of incidents leading to remorse and a few odd truths thrown in for good measure.
The truth is that the film could have been a lot better. But the honesty of the effort shows and Hirani is able to capture many emotional moments from the film. The film may not have released at many multiplexes in India due to differences between the producer and the multiplex owners, but is bound to take the single screens by storm. Emotional moments like the one where Munna apologises to Arshad Warsi after slapping him, or when Jimmy Shergill who plays a strayed youth returns to the righteous path after hearing Munna on radio hold the film up.
But what defies logic is that Jhanvi does not go deeper into Munna's bhaigiri tone and believes it to be his 'Gandhigiri'. The item numbers in the film also come in as sore thumbs at times. Only the title track and the Vande Mataram numbers are exceptional.
The one liners are funny, but Boman's lines are too trite…
Sanjay excels again and is much better in this one than in MBBS, Arshad is terrific too and Vidya looks different from what she did in Parineeta and does a decent job as well. Boman is too loud, but fair in some scenes. Dilip Prabhavalkar does best as what he could behind the make up of Gandhi and we won't tell you as that the son of India's biggest actor plays the man getting married to Diya Mirza.
Raju Hirani has shown good sense of the understanding of the medium but surely needs to cut out on the additional gimmicks to enable the series go on well.
Lage raho….
