Music Review: Don - The Chase Begins Again (2006)

    Director: Farhan Akhtar
    Music: Shankar, Ehsaan, Loy
    Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
Star Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Om Puri

Remaking a movie and using some of its songs. Lack of innovation or new ideas? You will ask. The answer is a Big NO. This new millenium Don's music rocks and even surpasses the original movie's music at times. Farhan succeeds again in extracting the best out of the talented trio S-E-L.

The album is composed of two tunes from the original Don and three new songs apart from two musical pieces. It is a beautiful mixture of 80's charm and today's popular music. Rarely do you see someone taking such a big challenge and then succeeding in it, in such a BIG WAY! Coming to the songs...

"Aaj Ki Raat" - Singers: Alisha Chinai, Sonu Nigam and Mahalakshmi Iyer
This is a new song not from the original. One of the best songs of the album. It has a very enchating tune which will haunt you in the first time itself. On a keen listening you will notice that it is mix of old and new music. You can instantly see the creativity of the composers here. Alisha does an excellent job. But its Mahalakshmi who suprises with her melliflous voice. Overall, an excellent way to give the feel of the album in the begining. This song should be picturized on Isha and Priyanka and would occur at the same time when "Jiska Mujhe Tha Intezar" song takes place in the original.
    Rating: 9.5/10

"Don - Revisited" - Composers: Medevial Punditz
Funkadelic music from the original title song interspersed with dialouges from original like "Don ki talaash to gyarah mulko ki police kar rahi hain. Lekin Don ko pakdna mushkil hi nahi, namumkeen hain". This one has very nice beats and is very fast pased. It should run in the background in the movie. Nice job by Medevial Punditz. We never could have imagined that the dialogues and the old title song tune can be turned into something else in such an innovative manner.
    Rating: 8.5/10

"Khaike Paan Banaraswaala" - Singers: Udit Narayan and Shahrukh Khan
Here comes the biggest challenge for the composers and the biggest question for the listners. Will it live upto the high standards set by the original? The answer is definitely a YES. Lots of detailing has gone into making of this number and it can easliy be seen. The essence of the original is well maintained and Udit does an excellent job by bringing that accent which makes this song so more special. Kishore-da wouldn't have been dis-appointed with Udit. The song starts with Udit explaining the situation saying "Hum khaane chale the halwaa, par muh hi jal gaya hain". The song catches up from the word - Go. King Khan gets to mouth some "Shudh Hindi" lines in between and he does extremely well. The song is definitely going to ROCK on the screen.
    Rating: 9.5/10

"Main Hoon Don" - Singer: Shaan
Best song of Shaan's career so far. This song is totally different from the original title song. Although it might take a couple of times before this song "gets you" but once it does you won't be able to resist the temptation of pressing the re-play button repeatedly. Excellent lyrics by Javed-Saab that keeps the spirit of the old Don going like "Dushman jo mera hain, duniya mein rehta nahi hain". This shows the creative experimentation that has gone in the making of this album.
    Rating: 9/10

"Main Hoon Don" - Singer: Shaan
Better than the original song from this album. It ROCKS! in one word. Very well remixed. The beats are just going to rock the dance floor of many pubs. Watch out for this one.
    Rating: 9.5/10

    "Maurya" - Singer: Shankar Mahadevan
Listen to this track and you'll know why I said that this album surpasses the original at times. This "Ganpati" devotional song has some excellent lyrics and that festival feel which one only gets in the Ganpati pandals during the festival. It has excellent use of dholaks and lezims. Dont be surprised if you hear this song in full-volume in the Ganpati pandals in your street. Excellent job by Shankar. This song will be introductory song of the duplicate Don in the movie.
    Rating: 9.5/10

    "Theme Music - Instrumental"
Very nicely done. It combines dialogues and tunes from this and the original Don movie. Watch out for the different variations of moods in this composition. Again innovation is the key here.
    Rating: 8/10

"Yeh Mera Dil" - Singer: Sunidhi Chauhan
How can Don be complete without this enchanting and seductive number performed so graciously by Helen on the screen? Frankly speaking while hearing the song for the first couple of seconds, I was a bit "iffy". But as the song progressed I realized that it is really to be enjoyed and not be compared with original. Sunidhi does a wonderful job. She gives the song the feeling of "I will kill you, after I am done with the song" kind of feel just like Asha-Ji did. It is very fast paced and I can't wait to watch Kareena sizzling the screen and setting it afire. Amazing!
    Rating: 9/10

    Overall :
An excellent album. Great job S-E-L once again. It will rock the charts in days to come.

    Rating: (9/10).
