Today’s glam sham movies and item songs are definitely what please the audience in today’s Indian Cinema. The women seem to be wearing clothes more and more revealing or better yet “a lack of clothes.” Similarly, the men seldom wear any shirts … It is just interesting to see the western influence on Bollywood take full effect in this new millennia. What is to come in the next ten years will only be decided by aap ka choice, as in what the public likes.
Take the simple super hit Garam Masala released in 2005; the movie’s theatrical trailers were enough to make every male go pick up the soundtrack and off-course go watch the movie, myself included. The sounds are catchy and explicit, and what is appealing about that the songs? … Obviously, about a hundred women dancing half naked in the song. Do examples like this show that Bollywood has lost its appeal in developing good quality movies? I certainly do not think so; today’s hits, whether that be Garam Masala (2005) or Black (2005) both have their appeal. I think the major difference lies in the target audience and the creation of entertainment vs. art. Garam Masala (for all that have not seen it) is a light comedy of two young photographers on the chase of women. On the other hand, Black offers the strong and emotional drama between a blind and deaf child and her tutor.
All film industries small and big are affected by culture and today’s audience as that is the driving nature of the business. In the end, artists will continue to develop great movies of quality for the sake of the profession regardless of its paisa. The Bollywood industry today continues to be the strongest film industry in the world. The reason is obvious, continuous adaptation and demand from the public.
