FILM REVIEW: HUMKO DEEWANA KAR GAYE (2006)

Director: Raj Kanwar
Star Cast: Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Bipasha Basu, Anil Kapoor
Lyricist: Sameer
Music Directors: Anu Malik, Himesh Reshammiya

Story / Writer: Raj Kanwar

So, what is the film about?
The film is about love and marriage. We have two characters, already engaged to other people, meet and fall in love with each other, causing a few complications with respected fiancés.

Who are the lovers and who are the fiancés?
The lovers are Akshay and Katrina, and the fiancés Bipasha and Anil Kapoor.

Anil Kapoor? Is he not a little old for Katrina?
Yes he most definitely is, but hey this is Bollywood. In Bollywood you can get away with anything.

It’s a normal run of the mill Bollywood flick then?
Yes, nothing special, just ordinary.

What happens in the end, who marries who?
To be frank, I really didn’t watch the ending. I had a prior engagement of my own to attend. No pun intended.

How well are the performances?
Akshay does well, but I am getting a little tired watching him in romantic roles day in day out. Katrina is the shot out of the blue. Her acting has to be admired. If she keeps this up, then with that body of hers, it’ll be a great combination. Anil looks odd with that hairstyle! Bipasha is sexy. Full stop.

And the direction, cinematography, and music?
You would expect a little more from the director… Raj Kanwar fails. Cinematography is first rate. Music is Himesh and not Anu.

What would you have done if you were the writer of the film?
I would have torn up the script and shredded it. Replacing it with a sci-fi action thriller set in the far depths of the galaxy. Akshay Kumar would play the cyborg who falls in love with his creator’s (Anil Kapoor) daughter (Katrina Kaif). Knowing that his daughter was about to run away with the cyborg, Anil would create a beautiful female cyborg (Bipasha Basu), who would then mate with Anil and create lots of little baby cyborgs.

Weird, and where would the story be there?
Who needs a story when you have cyborgs and Katrina… and Bipasha!

Back to the film, how would you sum it up?
I would sum the film up as… Katrina Deewana Kar Gayi.
