FILM REVIEW: INSAAN (2005)

Director: K Subhaash
Starring: Ajay Devgan, Akshay Kumar, Lara Dutta, Tusshar, Esha Deol
Producer: Keshu Ramsay

Radio Sargam Rating: 2/10

Synopsis
Ajit Rathod (Ajay Devgan) is a policeman whose wife (Koena Mitra) was killed by the ruthless militant Azhar (Rahul Dev). Coincidentally, Ajit happens to meet Azhar’s brother Amjad (Akshay Kumar) and they become friends. Amjad likes his tomboyish neighbour Meghna (Lara Dutta) who runs a karate class, but she starts falling in love with Ajit. The other twist is that Amjad is in love with Heena (Esha Deol), but her parents don't approve of the relationship, as Amjad does not have much money. So Amjad makes a plan to con them and marry Heena. Adding to the confusion, Avinash (Tusshar Kapoor) and Indu (Laila), are struggling actors who fall for each other. In the end the villains are all eliminated to suit a positive climax.

Critique:
We do not know whether to call this film Insaan or Insane. Made by director K Subhaash, it is reflective of cinema that one has seen years ago. It does not have any punch and the audience will find it hard to relate to the story. The film is a remake of a south movie, which has terrorism as the base.

Even if you haven't see stories of misguided terrorists in Fiza and Mission Kashmir among other films, you should not watch this one. Akshay Kumar has the best lines and scenes in the film. So much so, that you wonder whether Kumar has himself directed and then edited the film.

The film caters only to the front benchers and the verbal tsunami about the secularism and deshbhakti fails to evoke any kind of reaction from the audience as well. This film has wasted a huge star cast and should never have been made! It is said that the story idea emanated from Rajkumar Santoshi himself. I would like to know in which decade.

Koena Mitra is lost since there are no item numbers and she probably isn’t used to wearing so much clothes. Obviously with a hero like Ajay Devgan, how can one expect her to dance? Hence that angle is very boring. The love story between Akshay and Esha grabs attention at times, and the deliberately inserted story of Tusshar and south actress Laila is wasted.

Ajay does his usual intense-eyed routine, but fails. The film is a waste of resources and money as well. The others are also just wasted in the film, which has no meaning. No wonder nobody in the cast wants to talk much about the film at all…there is literally nothing to talk about! The music is ordinary, the stunts are bad, the cinematography is insipid. One wonders whether the stars were paid or not for the film.
