FILM REVIEW: HOME DELIVERY (2005)

Directed and Written by: Sujoy Ghosh
Starring: Vivek Oberoi, Boman Irani, Mahima Chaudhry, Ayesha Takia

Film Maker Sujoy Ghosh delivers the simple tale on lessons of life through his new movie ‘Home Delivery’ and one finds the story soooo simple that it come equal to boring and dull. One feels angry because the promos were so good - enjoyable, funky and giving a fresh appeal - it seems that the director spend more time planning the promotion strategy. A lot of cameo made the movie confusing, out of track without giving justice to the main characters. A lot of songs - played another spoilsport.

Sunny Malhotra (Vivek Oberoi) is a Times of Hindustan writer, popular as agony uncle who gives advice on such matters as love, heartbreaks, extramarital affairs and likes named as Gyan Guru. His big break comes in the form of a prestigious screenplay writing project for the most happening film director, Karan Johar but he is having serious trouble bringing his storylines to end.

He has a fiancee Jenny (Ayesha Takia) whom he takes of granted and his views about marriage reflect his cynicism towards life. He is also of this viewpoint he is a self-made man and that whatever he has achieved in life is due to his own hard work and nobody else’s.

One fateful day he gets a chance to meet his old teenage heartthrob, a South Indian film actress Maya (Mahima Choudhary) on a television chat show and his love for her overpowers his emotions. He deliberately hints to Maya that he is writing a script and looking for a female for the lead role. Maya who is desperate to make her entry into Bollywood looks at him as an opportunity to be a part of the Karan Johar project and tries to entice him in her love. Sunny is suddenly caught in the war of emotions - a battle between love and Lust.

The story takes a step into Michael Burnett life who is a 51 year old, Pizza delivery boy at ‘Mummy’s Pizza’ a popular pizza outlet. His career chart hasn’t been too impressive till date as he has lost a job every 2 days so far! But this time, however, he vows to keep this one no matter what.

It’s the eve of Diwali and Sunny all of a sudden gets too much on his plate. His screenplay is still not complete, he’s got to avoid his editor’s telephone calls who is furious for he’s bunking work (spending time with Maya) and he in his excitement of a date with Maya has forgotten that he has also been called by Jenny at her parents’ place for a dinner. His pizza which had ordered with ‘Mummy’s Pizza’ is delivered by Michael Burnett. But Michael just doesn’t deliver pizza there he…

What follows are series of senseless and baseless situations that try to make the viewers laugh but the process seems futile and wasted. The bitter-sweet romance between Viveik and Ayesha that was supposed to touch one’s heart does not creates its magic and the supposedly comic neighbors of Sunny - Pandey (Saurabh Shukla)and Gungunani (Tikku Talsania), their antics are not funny enough to make anyone laugh. The track that involved - a serial killer P3P, Page 3 psycho (Arif Zakaria) whose targets have one thing in common - Page 3 types on lookout for Maya - was wasted.

Viveik Oberoi fails to look the part and even his character looks ill defined. Although with a small role, Ayesha Takia steals the show with her vulnerability and sweetness. Mahima do her part well as a glamour girl. Boman Irani over and above the non-existent screenplay gives a remarkable performance.

More pains have been taken to make the movie stylish than the character development, the screenplay and the direction.

Don’t ask for Home Delivery, go to some other alternative.
