FILM REVIEW: DIL MAANGE MORE (2004)

Director: Ananth Narayan Mahadevan
Music: Himesh Reshammiya
Lyrics: Sameer
Producer: Nikhil Panchamiya
Starring: Shahid Kapoor, Soha Ali Khan

Radio Sargam Rating: 5/10

Synopsis:
Nikhil (Shahid Kapur) is an aimless lad in Samarpur who is in love with Neha (Soha Ali Khan). Neha too reciprocates his love, but wants to fly higher in life. Her ambition in life is to be an air-hostess and she decides to move into the city for the same.

Nikhil pursues her to Mumbai and tries to get her back to his hometown, but in vain. He does not lose hope and to make ends meet, picks up a job at a music store. Sara (Tulip Joshi) a girl who he meets at the music shop, falls for him and ditto with Nikhil who feels that she has touched the chords of his life. He has a boss at the music store aptly called A R Rahman (Gulshan Grover in a deadly role).

In the meantime, Nikhil’s neighbour in Mumbai - Shagun (Ayesha Takia) also occupies some space in his heart apart from staying in his locality. Ostensibly, the lad is confused. He has chased a girl and come to Mumbai. He does not know who he likes. His predicament is similar to that of the screenplay writer who seems confused and comes to an end, which does not sound very convincing. Not many people would want to agree with the thought process behind the film.

Critique:
The film has nothing much to offer. But Ananth Narayan Mahadevan scores as the director. He holds promise and given a good star cast and a better screenplay writer, he can deliver much better. He should now make bigger films with bigger stars.

Ananth has also highly impressed with the song and dance routine. His earlier film Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar had too many songs. Even this film tries to package a lot of songs into the story when it actually doesn’t fit. That is a major drawback of the film. Otherwise, Dil Maange More is full of life and energy due to the effervescent Shahid Kapur. The lad holds a lot of promise, but he should begin to have an identity of his own. While one saw him try to ape Amitabh Bachchan during the climax of Fida, he tries to imitate Shah Rukh Khan in this film. Agreed that he has a style similar to Khan, but that should be toned down and not made very similar.

Soha makes a lovely debut reflecting her genes. The actress is very good on an individual level and can hold her own, but needs to get into dancing classes. Her diction is impeccable and it shows how important it is for a well-educated actress to enter the field as it brings so much life into the character.

Ayesha Takia is bubbly. Since she gets the guy at the end of the film, it is so important that this should have been her debut film as she has better scope to perform as well.

Tulip Joshi who made a bad debut in Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi before doing the brilliant but unreleased Matrubhumi has done a better job than what she did in the Yash Chopra product. Experience shows.

Cinematography is average thanks to the fresh Asian locales and music is above average. Ananth’s earlier film had music belonging to the late RD Burman.

Conclusion:
Once viewing of the film is more than enough. The heart does not seek more of this kind of a subject.
