FILM REVIEW: Bachke Rehna Re Baba (2005)

Director: Govind Menon
Producer:Vijay Galani, Rahul Sughand
Cast: Rekha, Mallika Sherawat, Paresh Rawal
Music: Anu Malik

Radio Sargam Rating: 4/10

Director Govind Menon tried his luck with garam Dharam in his last flick ‘Kis Kiski Kismat’ but that sank without even a trash. So, this time he makes it safer and ropes in glamour doll of yesteryears’ Rekha for help.

Comedy and sex can make an excellent combination – laughs punctuated with arousals. The formula did work for Hollywood filmmaker David Mirkin’s movie ‘Heartbreakers’. But the Indian rehash of the movie is simply a damp squib. It neither tickles nor titillates.

His modus operandi of the two sensuous swindlers is thus: Rukhmini lures rich bakras into marrying her. Then, according to their plan, Padmini seduces Rukhmini’s new husband. Rukhmini catches the two in the act and then files for divorce, claiming big money in alimony for her emotional trauma at husband’s infidelity.

One man to fall victim to the mausi bhanji duo is the loud-mouthed Punjabi Monty Bagga (Paresh Rawal). His marriage with Rukhmini remains unconsummated on their suhaag raat, and in the heat of the moment, he falls for another girl’s temptation the next day, only to be caught red-handed by Rukhmini. Divorce and the damage done!

He doesn’t know that the girl who seduced him was none other than Rukhmini’s bhanji.

The mausi-bhanji move to Mauritius to claim their next victim – a filthy rich Gutka baron Fakirchand Mansukhani (Satish Shah).

On the sidelines, Padmini finds another bakra, Raghu (Karan Khanna), a young restaurateur who is getting big offers of money for his place.

Before Rukhmini could pull off her con fully, Mansukhani dies. And at this propitious moment when she is carrying his dead body, drops by Monty Bagga with a remarriage proposal. Both mausi and bhanji are in a fix. The only way out seems to be that Padmini cons Raghu into marriage and then dupe him. But there is one problem – she is in love with the guy.

Director Govind Menon is working on Mallika like Ram Gopal Verma once worked on Urmila Matondkar. If ‘Rangeela’ was Urmila’s high point in her career, Mallika too has delivered her best in ‘Khwahish’ months back. She has shown her body a lot and now only her seducing advances make people in front benches whistle and giggle. Otherwise, she does not look a sexy woman at all. She does try to ooze oomph on screen, but she doesn’t have that charm in her looks that Urmila once had..

Prformance wise it is good old Paresh Rawal who scores; in a relatively small role he is good. Rekha leaves you wondering what this choosy actor saw in this role and film and why on earth she wears so many clothes when lounging in Mauritius the land of sun, sea and surf. Mallika need lessons pronto in almost everything, make up, acting, voice. Satish Shah is not in form and newcomer Karan Khanna will perhaps find his feet if he is actually given something to do.

To sum up the title of the film speaks for itself. Indeed, ‘Bachke Rehna Re Baba’ from his traumatic torture!
