FILM REVIEW: AASHIQ BANAYA AAPNE (2005)

Producer: Balabbhai Patel
Director: Aaditya Datt
Story: Aaditya Datt
Cast: Emraan Hashmi, Tanushree Dutta, Sonu Sood
Music: Himesh Reshammiya
Lyrics: Sameer

Out of four movies (Pyaar Mein Twist, Aashiq Banaya Aapnay, Dansh and Ramji Londonwale) released this week, ABA received maximum publicity. Primarily because of its superb soundtrack (most of which were lifted) and to some extent its lead pair (lover boy Emraan Hashmi and new diva Tanushree Dutta). But there isn’t anything more about this Aashiqui to write about.

There is a love triangle as is evident from the cast and promos but there’s no life to it. A shoddy plot, an interesting twist but a poorly written climax makes movie smell like stale meat.

The film opens with a hospital scene where three wounded youngsters are being carried to the door of ICU. As the door closes, film opens with a flashback.

Karan (Sonu Sood) and Sneha (Tanushree Dutta) are close buddies. While Sneha considers Karan her best friend, Karan is in love with her but being an introvert, he never found enough courage to tell her.

Enter Vicky (Emraan Hashmi), Karan’s childhood friend in their life, who instantly shares an excellent rapport with Sneha and makes her fall in love with him. Karan being a true friend warns Sneha that Vicky is a selfish playboy, who can’t withstand a girl more than a few months. Sneha being blind in love ignores him but one day she finds Vicky in bed with another woman. She decides to end their relationship, but Vicky is in no mood to let her go so easily and he starts harassing her.

One day police arrest Vicky for drug possession. This is when Karan finally proposes Sneha and asks her to marry him. On their engagement night Vicky comes there. Sneha asks him to go away from her life, but Vicky has something to tell her: That is the reason why he is so possessive of her even after being caught red-handed.

Who will Sneha choose in the end? The man she once loved or the one who always stood by her? Are Vicky’s intentions honest this time round? Will Karan allow Sneha to walk out of his life again? Why is Vicky so possessive of her even after being caught red-handed?

The reasons director gives for these questions are so silly that audience wondering; is director Aditya Dutt in wrong business? The film just leaves you cold and untouched. Aaditya Datt’s direction is as poor as his script. The biggest drawback of the film is that it relies so heavily on been-there-seen-that situations that you actually search for something innovative throughout those two hours.

The music is creating a wave especially the title song composed and performed by Himesh Reshammiya.

Off late, Emraan has been trapped in a particular image of playing the character of Casanova. He knows all of six expressions which he carries in all his films.

Sonu Sood had a disastrous debut with ‘Bhagat Singh’ and received brickbats for his wooden act in ‘Sheesha’. ‘Aashiq Banaya Aapne’ is no exception. Sonu Sood 6.1? gym toned physique and absolutely wooden looks doesn’t suit the character of sensitive and introvert lover.

Tanushree Dutta has the sex-appeal and looks natural before the camera. Only if she could improve her diction she would surely be a hot a property in Bollywood.

Aashiq Banaya Aapne is a lackluster fare and a good opportunity gone waste. Skip it!

RS Rating: 3/10
