DAMAN

Starring: Raveena Tandon, Sayaji Shinde, Sanjay Suri & Raima Sen

PREDICTED RATING: 6/10

Controversial director Kalpana Lamji is renowned for her portrayal of sensitive subjects for Bollywood's mass market. 'Darmiyaan' was probably the film that propelled her to success by exploring the issue surrounding eunuchs in India, it caused a lot of hype but also won her critical acclaim.

After being dazzled by her performance in 'Shool', Kalpana Lamji decided on Raveena Tandon as the heroine for her forthcoming venture 'Daman'. Once a glamour doll, singing and dancing her way through commercial films, Raveena has joined the likes of Tabu and Karishma Kapoor in opting for more performance orientated roles by ditching make up and designer outfits and playing more realistic characters.

The issue tackled in 'Daman' is that of marital violence and rape. It is intended as a hard hitting film with the aim of educating people that the myth of husbands using force to dominate their wives no longer exists. 'Daman' hopes to raise awareness about the evils of domestic violence and reinforce the notion of women's rights.

Located in Assam, Raveena plays the role of Durga, who becomes a victim through the hands of her husband played by Sayaji Shinde.

Raveena has shown her maturity as an actress in her previous film 'Shool' and is therefore more than capable of fulfilling this role with excellence. Her co-star, Sayaji, has credits such as 'Darmiyaan' and 'Kurukshetra' to his name and is expected to deliver a similar performance.
