PREDICTED RATING: 5/10

There has been a steady increase in the number of British Asian movies hitting the big screen recently. Following the success of East Is East and Bend It Like Beckham comes Bollywood Queen. This romantic musical stars Preeya Kalidas in the lead role.

The actress shot to fame by bagging a major role in A.R. Rahman's hit musical Bombay Dreams and also made a brief appearance in Bend It Like Beckham. This movie gives her a massive opportunity to showcase her talents once again.

The film is an Indian musical that fuses Eastern and Western cultures through its settings in Britain's multi cultural capital. The film draws on the richness of Indian music and Hindi pop tunes featuring nine Hindi songs and four dance sequences, which are only some of the fascinating moments of the film.

Bollywood Queen is a low budget movie set in London's East End. The story tracks a love affair between a young English guy called Jay (James MacAvoy) and a pretty British Asian girl called Geena (Preeya Kalidas) who belongs to a strictly traditional Indian family. Nineteen-year-old Geena has a bright future ahead. She is doing a business studies course, has a weekend job with the family firm, and lets not forget her trophy boyfriend.

But Geena still dreams about a life full of the happiness shown in Bollywood blockbusters. Luckily her desire for old-fashioned romance and adventure comes true when she meets Jay. She realises that love can be just as enthralling as the Bollywood songs on screen suggest.

However Geena's family does not approve of the relationship and the two lovebirds must hatch a plan to remain together…. Happily ever after!
