Starring: Amitabh Bachchan, Jackie Shroff, and Raveena Tandon PREDICTED RATING: 6/10 Agni Varsha is one of the most talked about films of the year with an interesting cast including names such as Amitabh Bachchan, Jackie Shroff, Raveena Tandon and Milind Soman. Well known Bangalore-based stage director Arjun Sajnani, who has directed 20 stage shows in the U.S and India, has based his directorial debut from the Indian epic Mahabharata. Since the mixture of period and modern drama worked so well on stage he decided to take the English language play to a wider audience by turning it into a Hindi film. The film is also adapted from the play The Fire and The Wind by accomplished Indian playwright Girish Karnad. Amitabh Bachchan stars in a special appearance as Hindu god Indra. Jackie Shroff undergoes an image change by shaving off his trademark moustache to play the role of the chief priest Paravasu. He has watched over a holy fire for seven years forsaking his family and all other earthly pleasures. In his absence his cousin and bitter rival Yavakri (Nagarjuna) seduces his lonely wife Vishakha (Raveena Tandon) to seek revenge. In the meantime, Paravasu's brother Arvasu (Milind Soman) falls in love with a tribal girl (Sonali Kulkarni) who is outside his Brahmin caste and this leads to an irreversible chain of events. South Indian star Prabhu Deva, famous for his dance numbers, plays the role of a demon. Agni Varsha boasts its self as a lavish period drama with the help of cinematographer Anil Mehta, who shot internationally acclaimed films Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Lagaan. Director Sajnani is confident that the story, which he describes as "a great big melodramatic pot boiler", has all the ingredients to entertain the audience with a modern day classic.
