PROJECTED RATING: ***** The hugely talented actor Kamal Hassan has worked hard to gain his reputation for making quality films, and hopes that his latest effort 'Abhay' will only reinforce his position in the Indian film industry. The film is based on a novel that Kamal wrote seventeen years ago, called 'Dayam'. Once again the actor is tackling two different roles in the movie. The first character is Major Vijay, a fearless fighter who basically has a good heart beneath all those muscles! The second character is the major's brother, Abhay, a ferocious and mean character with darker shades. He has been locked away in a mental asylum so many, many years. The movie really gets going when Vijay, who is engaged to his newscaster girlfriend (Raveena), visits his brother at the mental asylum. It seems like a simple enough event, but the action is really about to start! Joining both Kamal Hassans in the film are Raveena Tandon and Manisha Koirala. A lot has been written about Manisha doing a sexy striptease in the film, although we will have to wait and watch to find out exactly what happens in that scene! One of the many spellbinding scenes in the film is Kamal Haasan's dangerous fall from a 26-storey building, he was specially trained for the shot. Kamal Haasan, who plays the double role in the film, had to undergo rigorous training under National Security Guards. The shooting was done at the Army Parade in New Delhi earlier with the blessings from higher officers. The special effects itself is said to be costing around Rs. 13 million and promises to boast of sequences never ever seen on the Indian screen. Abhay has also been made in a South Indian version (Alavandhaan) at the same time as the Bollywood version. Look out for an international release on 19th October 2001.
