Movie Review: Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009) starring Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif

Director/s: Rajkumar Santoshi
Music: Pritam
Star Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Salman Khan

What happens when a director known for his hard-hitting subject orientated films decides to go down the path of a romantic comedy? Well we get to find out the answer to this question if we watch this week’s big release Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani.

With comedy flick’s making exceptional money at the Box Office, a recent example being the Ajay Devgan produced All The Best, it becomes feasible for Rajkumar Santoshi to do the same. After all it’s the returns the film receives that count at the end.

Not content on casting the run-of-the-mill comedy stalwarts, Santoshi brings together two of the industry’s leading eye-candy sensations, Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. Having never before seen together on screen, the pairing has become the most awaited ‘Jodi’ of 2009. Do they manage to create chemistry? And does Santoshi successfully direct a potential box office winner in this genre? The answer to both questions is a resounding YES!

Do take note of one thing though before you decide to go and watch this on the big screen, the story is not refreshing and certainly not something never seen before. But, the acting by the lead pair and the breathtaking music by Pritam are quite simply astounding.

Ranbir Kapoor plays Prem, a happy-go-lucky chap who likes to see smiles on everyone’s faces. Katrina Kaif is Jenny, the beautiful adopted daughter of foster parents who don’t really give her much time. You see our little Jenny is starving for love and attention and this handsome guy Prem is bursting to give out love. So it makes sense for both to meet and fall in love and be happy ever after, doesn’t it? But as always there have to be twists.

Even though Jenny is unloved she does love ‘someone’ and that someone in this story is Upen Patel. When Prem sees how much Jenny is infatuated with Upen Patel he tries to get the pair married, so that they can live happily ever after. After all Prem likes to see smiles on everyone’s faces even if that means he has to break his own heart.

The rest of the story sees Prem going to great lengths to achieve his task. But, as expected, in the end he wins the girl… or does he?

The film has a handful of great scenes that many will enjoy including one where Bollywood bad-boy Salman Khan makes an unexpected cameo. The one negative aspect of the story is the love between Katrina and Upen’s characters; totally unbelievable and contrived for the story.

Direction wise, Santoshi does show that he can move with the times by making a film that the masses will enjoy and not a select few. After his recent failures many were wandering if he had indeed run his course in Bollywood as a renowned filmmaker. His direction here answers that question.

Pritam has proved once again that when he doesn’t steal music from others he can make quality tunes of his own. APKGK has a soundtrack that will be remembered for many years to come.

Saawariya, Bachna Ae Haseeno and then Wake Up Sid all showed us that Ranbir Kapoor certainly has his family genes for acting. With Shah Rukh Khan now reaching the end of his tenure as King of Bollywood, Ranbir Kapoor will likely take that throne. Other young actors, such as Imran Khan and Shahid Kapur, just don’t have the Factor of X that this boy has; one to watch out for in the years to come.

Many think of Katrina Kaif as just being lucky; she picks films that do well and her acting is very poor. But time and again she proves her critics wrong. After successfully pulling in a hard-hitting performance in New York, in APKGZ she continues to show her versatile powers. If Ranbir is the next Shah Rukh Khan then this baby is the next Kajol; but saying that, Katrina has the potential to exceed far ahead. Keep on going Kat!

Business wise APKGK has all the plus points to create waves at theatres all over the country. This is a film to put on your must-watch list of 2009.

RS RATING: 8/10

Movie Review: Jail (2009) starring Neil Nitin Mukesh and Manoj Bajpai

Director/s: Madhur Bhandarkar
Star Cast: Neil Nitin Mukesh, Manoj Bajpai, Mugdha Godse

We have all watched films by Madhur Bhandarkar and seem to enjoy his style of filmmaking. The man takes on controversial subjects and using the platform of the cinema, shows the audience a unique side to everyday life in India. In Jail, Madhur has decided to show everyone life in a prison; a subject previously done in Bollywood. But if Bhandarkar is at the helm then rest assured your eyes will see something very unique.

Let us make it very clear to you from the on-sight; Jail is not a film made for the family audience. Depression is the only thing shown throughout. So do not watch this if you are hoping to throw away the winter blues.

Neil Nitin Mukesh is Parag, a man who has it all; a fantastic job and a sexy girlfriend. But things turn upside down for him and he finds himself in prison. Parag wails to the jailors that he is innocent but his pleas fall on deaf ears. Parag is destined to spend the rest of his life here. So he decides to make a decision for himself, either live his life amongst criminals or vain for freedom. He picks freedom and hence his tale of getting himself free begins.

One thing we would like to mention is not to miss the ending. Never before has something like this been witnessed in a Bollywood film. It will just thump your heart out of your chest.

Bhandarkar’s direction is impressive as one is able to not only see but feel the insides of the prison. One is also able to relate to life within the four walls. Not only that but Bhandarkar has successfully shown how the Indian legal system works, its failings are a huge concern many would relate too.

This has to be Neil Nitin Mukesh’s best ever performance and very difficult to surpass in future; not only his best but quite possibly the best performance by any other actor this year. If Neil does not win any Best Actor awards come 2010 then it will be an ‘injustice’.

Critics will praise Jail but its takings at the box office will be low. The film is made for a select audience and there it will be relished. Jail is THE film of 2009.

RS RATING: 8/10

EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI

After the super success of Aankhen, Waqt, Namastey London and Singh is King, Vipul Amrutlal Shah presents London Dreams. The main highlight of the movie is Vipul for the first time is working without his lucky mascot Akshay Kumar and ropes in stars- Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan, Asin, Om Puri, Rannvijay Singh and Adithya Roy Kapoor. Post Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, the duo Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan has come together for the movie after almost a decade.

The story revolves around two infancy friends Arjun (Ajay Devgan) and Mannu (Salman Khan). The two friends, completely diverse in their nature and living, however one thing that was common in the two was music. Arjun an ambitious guy from India, dreams to make it big in music world and lands in London forming his own band with Priya (Asin), Zoheb (Rannvijay Singh) and Wasim (Adhitya Roy Kapoor).

Whereas Mannu, on the other hand is a simple guy, young at heart, no great ambitions in life, and enjoying life to the core in India. A talent gifted Mannu, however wastes his talent of singing by performing in local weddings.

Arjun on one of his visits to India, take Mannu to London to include him in his band. Mannu due to his authentic way of performing become’s the favourite of the mass instantly. This makes Arjun feel jealous and apprehensive as what Arjun took years to achieve, Mannu did it at once. That’s when things start taking a catastrophic turns and twists, making Arjun insecure

The envy and the evil spirit further grow in Arjun when Mannu finds a place in Priya’s heart, whom Arjun loved but failed to express the same. It’s then when Arjun plan’s to destroy his best friend. Thus begins the journey of emotions, drama, jealousy and revenge.

London Dreams is certainly the best work from Vipul Shah till date. The director very well expresses the emotions of the die-hard friendship that feel you relate with real life. The movie technically is absolutely flawless and the cinematography by Sejal Shah is top notch. The background score by Salim-Sulaiman goes well with theme of the film. Surely the director has left no stone unturned for his (Dream) project.

Amongst the drawbacks of the film it is the climax and the music. The climax is a bit over-stretched and the concert with which it ends is a bit disappointing as it involves a slow track. The end with a thumping fast track could have been better. On the other hand the music of the film by the talented trio ends with a disappointing note. The music about the movie should have been more impactful as it is all about rock band but fails.

Talking about the actors, undoubtedly their performance has been the best. The chemistry between Ajay Devgn and Salman Khan is amazing and has build up even more in a decade which is very well seen on-screen. Salman Khan is stunning and impressive. Ajay Devgn’s performance is outstanding and flawless. Asin is commendable and does justice with the role. Aditya Roy Kapoor and Rannvijay create an impact instantly.

Overall it’s a thumb’s up for the movie!!!

Radiosargam Movie Rating: 7/10

EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI

Eros International and Boundscript Production brings you Aladin in Bollywood style, directed by Sujoy Ghosh, from the classic tale of ‘Aladin and The Magic Lamp’. The film stars the finest actor of the industry Amitabh Bachchan along with Sanjay Dutt, Riteish Deshmukh, Jacqueline Fernandes, Ratna Pathak, Juhi Chawla and Sameera Reddy.

The movie revolves around an orphan Aladin Chatterjee (Riteish Deshmukh), living in the city of khwaish. Aladin has been frightened and threatened since childhood by Kasim and his gang, until he finds Jasmine (Jacqueline Fernandes) who gives him a magic lamp.

The speciality of the lamp is that it lets loose genie Genius (Amitabh Bachchan). Genius is frantic and anxious to award three wishes to Aladin and finish his indenture with the lamp. Moreover to get free of Aladin, Genius the Rock-Star troubles him and makes Aladin life complex and difficult to live.

This continues until the ex-genie Ringmaster (Sanjay Dutt) gets behind Aladin’s life to kill him. This kicks a series of happenings and high melodrama between Genius and Ringmaster.

Aladin takes a kick start and promises to deliver the best of cinematic journey in over two hours. But all that begins well doesn’t end well and same holds true for Aladin. After an impressive start the movie dips with the entry of the Genie. Sujoy Ghosh’s screenplay is extremely disappointing. The film lacks the story and the fantasy which is highly shown in the trailers. Vishal-Shekar’s music is average.

The only good thing about the movie is it’s cinematography. Riteish does justice with the role but Amitabh Bachchan fails to impress. Sanjay Dutt also crashes to make an impact. Jacqueline Fernandez has little to do but looks gorgeous.

On the whole just avoid the movie.

Radiosargam Movie Rating: 3/10

EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI

Produced under the banner Studio18 and directed by Kunal Vijaykar, Fruit & Nut stars Boman Irani, Mahesh Manjrekar, Cyrus Broacha, Dia Mirza, Vijay Patkar.

The movie revolves Jolly Maker, a simple hard working struggling bachelor employed in the office of a ravenous and crooked builder’s office named Khandar. Jolly is a person in search of love, money and success.

One day Jolly Maker’s colleague Monica gets kidnapped. Thus begins a comic journey and Jolly finds himself in the middle of the plot built by Ex-Maharaja to destroy Mumbai. Whether Jolly will be successful in finding love? Will he be successful in saving Monica and above all will he be able to save Mumbai?

The movie has been made of senseless comedy and fails to entertain till the very end. The humour is irregularly experienced and the dialogues are not that very effective. The plot of the movie is poorly woven and the writing is weak.

The good thing about the movie is its actors and their acting. Boman Irani plays his role well, Cyrus Broacha and Mahesh Manjrekar are perfect. Finally Dia Mirza is impressive.

Radiosargam Movie Rating: 4/10

EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI

Animation flicks are rarely made in Bollywood and when made they are liked by all. Movies like Hanuman, Hanuman Returns and Bal Ganesh are few of the successful animated films made in the recent past. Same goes for Bal Ganesha 2 it’s a simple and light movie made for all generation of people.

The movie includes three different stories related to Lord Ganesha. The first story depicts how Lord Ganesha plays a prank on a cat and how Goddess Parvati gives advice to Lord Ganesha about good deeds.

The second story depicts Sage Vyasa. Lord Ganesha writes as well as translates the entire book while writing. The third story (the best out of three) depicts Lord Ganesha fighting with an evil Gajumkhasur.

The sequel undoubtedly experiences a better animation then the first part. Also the movie has a better storyline and is more interesting for the viewers. The narration and voice-dubbing is ideal.

On the whole Bal Ganesh 2 is a delightful experience. It’s a treat, Go for it!

The movie stars one of the most experienced and daredevils- Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Zayed Khan along with hot ‘n’ spicy Kylie Minogue, Katrina Kaif and voluptuous Lara Dutta.

250 feet deep lies the secret of Blue! And the secret is- deep down the ocean in Bahamas lies the treasure.

The story revolves around Aarav (Akshay Kumar) the owner of Blue Shipping &Fisheries. Aarav is one of the richest people in Bahamas. Taking risk is in his blood and daredevilry is his cult. Aarav’s greed and hunger for money has no boundaries and wants to be the richest of all.

Sagar (Sanjay Dutt) is Aarav’s close friend and employee. He is a simple and down to earth person. Loving Mona (Lara Dutta) and saving his brother Sam (Zayed Khan) is Sagar’s only motto. Sameer aka Sam (Zayed Khan) is a wanderer with enormous self confidence and never-dying passion for bikes. He unintentionally gets goofed up with the mafia in Bangkok and to hide he takes shelter in Bahamas.

Aarav as always aims big and this time he visions for the biggest of all- the Treasure lying in the arms of Pacific Ocean. This is a deadly task as it’s believed no one has ever come alive from the ocean. However Aarav has enough guts to fight the danger and face the peril. He pesters Sam for the same and convinces Sagar. And thus begins the hunt…..

This is kind of the movie never experienced in the history of Indian Cinema. It’s a top notch and above all action flicks made in the Industry till date. The movie experiences the great death defying stunts well executed by action director James Bomalick (Fast and Furious fame) keeping you at the edge of the seat. At few incidences one would practice goose- bumps all over the body and few would sure shot take away your breath.

Debutante Anthony D’Souza has lived to the expectations of all and gives an absolute substantial along with commercial flick. The bravery, determination, grit, vision and the financial backing for the project deserve a huge round of applause. The marine beauty has been wonderfully explored in the movie and the journey is absolutely delighting.

The movie has them all- great composition by A.R. Rahman, amazing cinematography by Laxman Utekar and Pete Zuccarini, fantastic sound design by Resul Pookutty, effective dialogues by Mayur Puri, exceptional screenplay by Anthony and Jasmine D’souza and finally last but not the least the extraordinary direction by Anthony D’souza.

However the climax could have been much better which lets you down and hardly makes sense and secondly there could have been more of action along with extra stunts.

On a whole BLUE is a stylish film and is a wonderful experience. The standards of the Indian cinema are surely to raise and induce people to think out of the box.

Radiosargam Movie Rating: 6/10

EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI

Sohail Khan Productions and Ronnie Screwvala’s UTV Motion Pictures gear up and bring together ‘Main Aur Mrs.Khanna’, directed by Prem R Soni. The movie stars Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor, and Sohail Khan.

The story revolves around Samir(Salman Khan) and Raina(Kareena Kapoor). The two meet at Melbourne airport and fall in love with each other. The relationship grows older and the two decide to get married. The marriage continues like a fairy tale and everything falls in right place. The bond between Samir and Raina gets stronger day by day.

However, after a short span of time the life of the two completely changes. Samir starts facing problem in the professional life and to pursue success in his career he leaves Raina, fleeing to Singapore. Raina on the other hand is left lonely but soon finds a new friend in Akash (Sohail Khan). Akash helps getting job for Raina and with the very first sight falls for Raina, inspite of knowing the fact of Raina being married.

Samir in meanwhile achieves success and his professional life returns back on track. He returns to Melbourne to take Raina and the drama begins. The film goes through complications as the marriage registration surfaces.

The positives about the movie are- Firstly it’s songs. Secondly Salman Khan and Kareena’s acting is mind blowing and carry their part well. Thirdly Sajid-Wajid’s composition is amazing. And lastly the beautiful locales of Australia that perfectly set the mood of the film.

The negatives of the movie are- Firstly the script is ordinary, loose and fails to deliver anything new. Secondly the dialogues are silly and one experiences some amateur humour. Thirdly few conversations between Salman and Kareena are completely unnatural and looks like forcefully incorporated in the movie. Finally Sohail Khan’s acting fails to create an impact at all and isn’t entertaining.

Overall the movie fails disastrously.

EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI

The lethal combo of Rohit Shetty & Ajay Devgan is back again and with a bang. The duo again succeeds to create the magic they had created last Diwali. Produced under the banner of Ajay Devgan Films and directed by Rohit Shetty, All The Best stars Ajay Devgan, Sanjay Dutt, Fardeen Khan, Bipasha Basu, Mughda Ghodse.

The movie revolves around Veer (Fardeen Khan) a professional singer staying in Goa and is in love with Vidya (Mughda Ghodse); however hated by Vidya’s father. Veer stays in his elder brother Dharam’s (Sanjay Dutt) house and is insatiable for getting that extra penny from his brother to better his living. Dharma is a successful business man who fulfils Veer’s dream of being a rockstar. Prem Chopra (Ajay Devgan) is a concept car expert and lives on Jhanvi’s (Bipasha Basu) money and is absolutely comfortable in doing the same. Jhanvi is the owner of a gym.

Prem and Veer are in a hurry to earn money and thus seeking shortcuts. However these shortcuts land the duo in a mess and they fine their life surrounded and sunk in debts. However in spite of the debts life goes on smoothly for Prem and Veer, until Dharam pays a sudden visit to the house. Due to Dharam’s untimely visit, Veer lies of being married to Jhanvi and Vidya being Prem’s girlfriend. Thus begins the game of mistaken identities as well as confusion and pass through the hilarious events and joyful journey.

Sanjay Mishra and Johnny Lever also leave no stone unturned in creating laughter and making the journey more delightful. Sanjay Mishra is like a person playing slumdog millionaire, whose life suddenly changes after winning a lottery and is now the owner of Veer’s house. However he can’t take entry in his own house, because Dharam bash him the every time he enters the mansion.

Rohit Shetty succeeds to deliver another high class rib-tickling comedy and his success formula of a multi starrer film works again. His direction is absolutely perfect and knows his audience well. However like his previous films there isn’t much strong storyline but who cares as far as it makes you feel tension free and makes you laugh. Dudley’s cinematography is incredible and flawless. Dialogues by Farhad- Sajid and Bunty Rathore are amusing, witty and entertaining. Pritam’s composition is respectable.

However the only drawback of the movie is it gets a bit slow in the second half and temporarily makes you feel boring.

Overall All the Best delivers what it promises and entertains till the very end. Go for this hilarious ride and enjoy!!!!!

EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI

White Feather Films in association with Mumbai Mantra bring together an action thriller Acid Factory starring Fardeen Khan, Manoj Bajpai, Irrfan Khan, Danny Denzongpa, Aftab Shivdasani, Dino Morea and Dia Mirza. The movie has been directed by Suparn Verma and is adapted from Hollywood flick Unknown.

Acid factory is a story about six (Fardeen Khan, Manoj Bajpai, Danny Denzongpa, Aftab Shivdasani, Dino Morea and Dia Mirza) people who find themselves in an acid factory. All of them have one thing in common and that is the fact that each one has no whereabouts as to how they landed in the factory; and the reason being a gas leakage from the container leading to temporary amnesia.

And over the next 70 minutes slowly and steadily the individuals start retrieving their memory leading to a flashback, unfolding the story about their grounding in the factory and this erroneous situation.

The drama continues as to how and why they have been caged and start blaming each other. They are left with no option and wait for one guy who is the mastermind behind this.

The movie has been lavishly shot and Sanjay Gupta maintains his style of presenting things like men in black, stunning women, trendy gears, chic jackets, cool bikes and cars.

Interestingly Fardeen Khan plays the undercover-cop and Irrfan Khan the in vogue villain. The movie experiences some amazing stunts and well executed action sequences. Ironically, the movies best scene is the lip-lock between Irrfan Khan and Dia Mirza.

However the movie has too many drawbacks- Firstly the dialogues of the movie are really poor, stingy and not well coordinated. Secondly, unnecessary hard hitting background score which leaves you with a headache by the end. Thirdly the movie is slow and has nothing in store in the first 60 minutes and fails to build any interest. Finally the climax of the movie is proletarian and could have been much better.

Overall the movie fails to live up to the expectations of the audience and there is nothing new about the movie.

Radiosargam Movie Rating: 5/10

EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI

Maxwell Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. in association with Trio Cafe Pvt. Ltd. bring together 3 Nights 4 Days directed by Devang Dholakia and stars Anuj Sawhney, Hrishita Bhatt, Farid Amiri, Madhuri Bhattacharya, Sameer Aftab, Pinky Harwani, Sanda Caktas, Areesz Gandhi.

The movie revolves around six friends Rahul (Anuj Sawhney), Rocky (Sameer Aftab), Amay (Farid Amiri), Priya (Pinky Harwani), Antara (Hrishita Bhatt) and Zoha (Madhuri Bhattacharya). The six were the best of friends during college days and have been out of contact since three years.

Each individual is busy with his/her respective careers and aiming high in life. All of a sudden Rocky plans to get married to his girlfriend Marianne (Sanda Caktas) and plans for a reunion inviting all his buddies for the wedding in Goa.

However things are not the same as in the past and Rahul, Priya and Zoha have become people with all set of new ideologies and principles. The three find no time for the wedding and fail to make it for the same. However on the other hand Antara and Amay remain the same with great affinity for their friends and pack their bags for Goa.

And all of sudden Marianne backs from her commitment and leaves Rahul and the film follows passing through various ups and downs.

The movie experiences some fresh blood with good acting capabilities. The theme of the movie is good and is based on today’s youth and culture. A good storyline and a decent direction.

However the promotion of the movie has been not up to the mark and fails to rope in any big star, which could keep away the audience from watching the movie. The music of the movie is disappointing and fails to make the impact.

Overall a decent film!

EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI

The trend in Bollywood has changed. From typical family entertainers, comic capers, masala flicks and action films, the industry has started raising the fresh subjects which resemble the life of an ordinary person. The movie Wake Up Sid is no different from such fresh genre film and stars Ranbir Kapoor along with Konkana Sen Sharma, Rahul Khanna and Anupam Kher.

The story revolves around recently college passed out lazy and slothful boy Siddharth (Ranbir Kapoor). Siddharth is a guy who without much efforts gains all what he wishes due to his rich and well-heeled family. But as he passes out from the college the slipshod attitude continues and heads aimlessly in life.

Siddharth continues freaking with his best buddies and takes his life as well as his father’s wealth for granted. Siddharth comes across Aisha (Konkana Sen Sharma), an aspiring writer from Kolkatta and becomes the best friend of his. Aisha finds Siddharth honest, sweet and a funny guy which makes their bond deeper and special.

On one fine day tired of his careless behaviour Siddharth’s father (Anupam Kher) notifies him and tries to make Siddharth realise his responsibilities towards life. This leads to a dispute between father and the son and Siddharth leaves his father’s home and takes shelter in Aisha’s house. This leads to drastic changes in Siddharth’s life as he has to live without his father’s wealth. This leads to a series of events and force Siddharth to introspect himself and take life more seriously.

The movie marks the directorial debut of a young director Ayan Mukherji and is worth applauding. Well directed and a well balanced movie and has raised the story beautifully. The best thing about the movie is the director exactly knows the perception of the audience and has made the film with due care.

The first half of the film is delighting and heart winning. A few emotional adventures touch your heart, few jesting scenes refresh the mind and the music by the trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy completely takes you to a different world.

However the drawback of the movie, the story, seems to be nothing new and would lead to comparisons to movies like Dil Chahta Hai and Lakshya. One would really find Ranbir’s character as seen before.

Ranbir Kapoor’s acting is amazing and this movie will surely take him to a higher level. Konkana Sen Sharma is simple yet beautiful and Anupam Kher, as always, very expressive and an ideal choice to play a responsible father.

Overall the film is refreshing and would sure win hearts of the youth. WAKE UP and go for it!!!!

Radiosargam Movie Rating: 7/10

EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI

The comedy King of Bollywood David Dhawan is back with a bang with Do Knot Disturb. Like other films of David Dhawan this movie also capers on ultimate comedy with enormous humour and eventual on screen timing.

The movie stars none other than his much-loved star Govinda along with Ritesh Deshmukh, Sushmita Sen, Lara Dutta,Sohail Khan, Ranvir Shorey and Rajpal Yadav. The movie is produced under the banner of Puja Films Pvt. Ltd.

The movie revolves around a rich businessman (Govinda), who lives on his wife’s (Sushmita Sen) money who is a super successful and a stunning woman. Tired of this dominant life governed by her wife, Govinda tries to find a way out of the loop and falls in love with Lara Dutta (The Supermodel). And thus kick starts a series of events which takes you through the hilarious ride.

To hide his extra-marital love interest Govinda entices and hires a waiter- Riteish Deshmukh to act as Lara Dutta’s boyfriend. Sushmita Sen finds something suspicious and appoints a private detective Ranvir Shorey to unveil the truth.

There is also Sohail Khan an angry young man, the ex-lover of Lara Dutta, whom she leaves for this rich businessman. But still Sohail is madly in love for the lady.

The positives about the movie are- firstly it’s a David Dhawan film which means it will keep you entertaining till the end by it’s wacky one liners. Secondly the movie experiences the finest comic actors- Govinda, Riteish Deshmukh, Rajapal Yadav and Ranvir Shorey, all with witty sense of humour.

Thirdly, like other films from the director this one too has no logic and impact storyline, though leaving your mind fresh when back home. And finally one would not like to miss to see two stunning, gorgeous and voluptuous ladies, Lara Dutta and Sushmita Sen in the same film.

The negatives about the movie- Firstly there are few scenes where you see Govinda and Lara Dutta overacting and this bores the audience. Secondly, there is no strong storyline in the movie and leads aimlessly. Thirdly, songs and the music are unbearable and get on to the nerves. Finally at times the film appears to be lengthy and turn off the interest of the viewers.

Overall it’s an average flick and fails to meet the expectations of the audience and the class of his previous comic adventure.

Radiosargam Movie Rating: 5/10

EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI

UTV Motion Pictures in association with Ashutosh Gowariker Production Pvt. Ltd. brings together What’s Your Raashee?, starring Hurman Baweja and Priyanka Chopra. Known for making extraordinary movies and experimenting on diverse projects like Lagaan, Swades and Jodha Akbar, Ashutosh Gowariker is back with yet another innovative project What’s Your Raashee? The movie is based on the novel ‘Kimball Ravenswood’ by Madhu Rye.

The story revolves around Yogesh Patel (Hurman Baweja) a young man residing in Chicago who enjoys his life to the core. Yogesh is always in search of his love and dreams of getting married to the same, until his family calls him to India and asks Yogesh to get married in just ten days.

Yogesh is in a dilemma and lands in complicated situation, but soon clicks with an idea of meeting a girl (Priyanka Chopra) from each Raashee and giving himself a chance of falling in love with each girl. Yogesh finds this idea the best way of finding a compatible and a perfect bride for himself and goes ahead with the thought.

Thus, Yogesh decides to meet two girls from each sun sign everyday and get to know them all in six days. Next three days to analyze and choose the best amongst the twelve girls and on the final day (tenth day) to get married to the ideal partner.

From here on starts the journey of an eligible bachelor Yogesh meeting and discovering the twelve girls and is seen romancing, singing as well as dancing with different girls. The movie explores girls with different attitude and perception from ambitious-conditional and unconventional-social.

As much as the movie appears to be interesting on paper, it equally disappoints on screen and the reasons for the same are many. Firstly, the length of the movie is tedious, in recent times where people as well as multiplexes for more benefits prefer short movies this movie is as big as 3hours and 30mins.

Secondly, the screenplay is weak and script is poor. Thirdly, few of the sun-sign stories are silly furthermore they hardly make sense and turn off your interest. Lastly the biggest cause of concern are 13 tracks of the movie which bore the audience.

Priyanka does well in the film and is a complete show stealer. Hurman is decent and carries the role well.

This is a complete disaster from one of the finest and pioneer film-makers of the industry, it’s a thumbs down for Ashutosh Gowariker for this flick.

Radiosargam Movie Rating: 4/10

Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Rani Mukherjee, Poonam Dhillon, Rakhi Sawant, Sherlyn Chopra, Anupam Kher, Dalip Tahil
Producer: Yashraj Films
Director: Anurag Singh

EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI

Yashraj Raj Films enterprise brings you Dil Bole Hadippa!, starring Shahid Kapoor, Rani Mukherjee, Rakhi Sawant and Sherlyn Chopra. The movie has been directed by debutante Anurag Singh.

The movie revolves around small-town Punjabi kudi- Veera Kaur (Rani Mukherjee), working in a local theatre group but is passionate for cricket and imagines for playing for Indian cricket team.

Rohan (Shahid Kapoor) is a skilled captain of a county cricket team in England. Rohan returns to India to captain his father’s cricket team which has been losing for the last 8 years. Rohan is all set to make the best team ever in the history of cricket and save his father’s pride.

In pursuance to play in Rohan’s team Veera sports a turban and a beard to accomplish her dreams. Impressed by Veera’s commitment, passion and liveliness for cricket, she finds a place in Rohan’s team and becomes Veer Pratap Singh. And the movie seems to take off nicely.

However in mid of all Rohan (Shahid Kapoor) falls in love with Veera (Rani Mukherjee) and suddenly the movie takes a turn and the love story begins. To add oomph to the movie there is hot sizzling damsel ‘Miss Chandigarh’ Soniya (Sherlyn Chopra) and item girl Shanno Amritsari (Rakhi Sawant).

The movie also sees some great friendship and well defined role shared by Vikramjit Singh (Anupam Kher) and Liyaqat Ali Khan (Dalip Tahil).

The climax of the movie is outstanding and ends with what was expected- a Cricket Match between India v/s Pakistan. The match has been well executed and keeps you on the edge of your seat till the end with some thrilling moments.

Overall, the on screen chemistry between Shahid and Rani is worth watching. The movie experiences great dedication and a well handled role by Rani Mukherjee. Shahid Kapoor is decent in his role but the movie more descends towards Rani. Anupam Kher and Dalip Tahil are wonderful in their characters and do justice to their part.

However, there are a few flaws in the movie which makes it an average film. The movie practices an overdose of emotions. Anurag Singh’s direction is good in bits-n-parts and surely could have been much better. The songs in the movie aren’t great, they fail to make any impression and become bore. And finally, the script is ordinary and is predictable.

On a whole it’s an average flick!

Radiosargam Movie Rating: 4/10

Movie Review: Wanted (2009)

Cast: Salman Khan, Aayesha Takia Azmi, Mahesh Manjrekar, Aseem Merchant, Vinod Khanna

Producer: Boney Kapoor

Director: Prabhu Dheva

Music Director: Sajid-Wajid

EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI

The movie is probuced by Boney Kapoor and marks the directorial debut for one of the best and ace choreographer Prabhu Deva in Bollywood. To make the hard impact on the audience with his very first film Prabhu ropes in the superstar Salman Khan along with Ayesha Takia, Mahesh Manjrekar, Asseem Merchant, Sajid and Vinod Khanna and it WORKS!

The film is a remake of a regional film named ‘Pokiri’. Wanted is a complete entertainer and is full of Bollywood masala from action-roamnce and humour-sombre, the movie has them all.

The project revolves around a trained fighter and sharpshooter called Radhe (Salman Khan) who joins the underworld gang of Gani Bhai (Prakash Raj). Radhe is a fearless, chilled out man but at the same time rebellious. He likes doing things which are against the authority.

Mafia don, Gani Bhai (Prakash Raj) is a deadly person and both his friends and foes are afraid of him. He is the kind of person who without much efforts can kill his enemy and so nobody dares to go against him. On the other hand, there is Commissioner Ashraf Khan [Govind Namdeo] who promises to make the city crime free.

Apart from action, Jahnvi (Ayesha Takia Azmi) brings in some romance in the movie. Radhe is amaze with Janhvi’s love for him and falls for her. The movie also sees the guest appearance by Anil Kapoor, Govinda and Prabhu Dehva in the song Jalwa.

The climax of the movie is breath taking as one sees Salman Khan with maniac anger and bashing all the evils centre and forward. This proves why only Salman Khan could do justice with the role. It’s a complete one man show and would be a path-breaking movie for Salman Khan.

The movie marks the comeback of superstar Salman Khan in a true sense and sees some great acting that had been subtle or lost somewhere in the actor in the recent years. Prabhu Dheva’s direction has been excellent and par in few scenes as he executes the death defying stunts and some handsome choreography.

However there are few drawbacks in the movie. First to begin with the music of the movie isn’t that great and songs except ‘Jalwa’ and ‘Love Me’ fail to make any impact. Secondly the movie could have been shorter if few songs and scenes could have been edited. And lastly, there is nothing new about the story and audience can easily predict the sequences.

A sure treat for everyone this weekend and especially for action lovers as well as Salman Khan’s fans. This one is surely the movie for which the audience and Salman Khan would have been waiting for. A sure-shot hit and paisa vasool movie. Go catch the WANTED Salman Khan in theatres near you.

Radiosargam Movie Rating: 6/10

EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI

Samir Karnik has decided not to come of out Bobby Deol. I mean whether the script demands or not, Bobby Deol is always there in his movies. In addition to Bobby, it is the kid Dwij Yadav who has started irritating the masses with his humpty dumpty actions.

Eliminate these actors out of your contract Mr Samir Karnik, and I assure you a blockbuster. And what is it with the emotional quotient, the cries and fouls just goes on and on. Is there a stopping to this rona – dhona or not?

The storyline of Vaada Raha starts off with all the things going the good way. Dr Duke (Bobby Deol) is a true optimist and infuses hope wherever he goes and whatever he does. He is in love with Nalini (Kangana Ranaut). However, an accident changes the entire life of Duke as he is left paralysed below his neck, with no one by his side, not even Nalini.

Hope is lost until Roshan (Dwij Yadav) enters Duke’s room and slowly yet steadily creates an aura of liveliness. Roshan is suffering from cancer and the rest of the film depicts the way in which both the patients make an attempt for the other’s survival.

Direction is okay but Samir Karnik has not improved on his narration as yet. He still lacks the prowess to hold the attention of the viewer. Binod Pradhan’s cinematography is class. Music wise, Vaada Raha lacks melody. Choreography too is run of the mill.

Actingwise, Bobby Deol is fantastic. Kangana Ranaut is a cloud of make-up. Dwij Yadav does well but looks like there is a dearth of child artists in our Hindi Film Industry.

Overall, Vaada Raha does not live up to the noise that it has been making in its promotions. Avoidable completely!

Radiosargam Movie Rating: 4/10

EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI

When we think about movies made on underworld and gangsters, the first name that comes to our mind is Ram Gopal Varma. Ramu has not only explored but he has completely excelled in this domain of film making, and therefore, Baabarr had to exploit a new subject to make its mark, and it does, atleast upto an extent.

Brutal violence, terrifying moments make Baabarr a movie for tough men. Set in the locales of Uttar Pradesh, the film tries to explore the various facets of law breakers in politicians, cops and gangsters. The storyline maintains a raw appeal and the setting of the subject in the Northern state helps it to do the same.
The story of Baabarr starts off with a 12-year old boy who shoots a man, and walks into the lane of Aman Ganj with no fear in his eyes, not repentful for the sin he has committed.

The same boy grows up to become a havoc for the state, he is now known as Baabarr (Soham Shah). The government wakes up to his crimes and instructs encounter specialist S.P. Dwivedi (Mithun Chakraborty) to fix him up.

Watching Baabarr is a strainful experience, the subject is completely dark with a gruelling plot. The amount of negativity shown in the characters is quite difficult to absorb.

Storywise, writer Ikram Akhtar has done a terrific job. He has pinned all the complexities of gangster wars and criminal sequences to make a power packed script. Ashuu Trikha’s direction is good. Dialogues are okay. Cinematography is good.

Actingwise, Soham Shah lives upto his character. Mithun Chakraborty is good. Om puri acts very well, he is like the old wine in a new bottle everytime.

Overall, Baabarr is an average film but one needs courage to sit through it.

Radiosargam Movie Rating: 5/10

EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI

Caught in the old style of film making, Ruslaan is a weak attempt to project a sensitive subject close like terrorism.

The storyline revolves around Ruslaan (Rajveer Sharma) who gets framed after a series of bomb blasts strike the city of Mumbai. The entire incident shakes up his life and love – Samaira (Megha Chatterjee).

The film falls prey to poor technical execution. All the parts of film making look weak, call it direction, screenplay, cinematography and most importantly the script. Music, too lacks continuity and every song is soulless.

Actingwise, Rajveer Sharma is average. Lack of good script shows the effect on his performance. Megha lacks acting skills. Asrani is timepass.

Overall, Ruslaan is a weak fare at the box office.

EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI

Aamras attempts to bring light hearted teenage humour back to life but manages only one-fourth of it. The film is about independence, friendship, naughtiness, sensuality that strikes the life of four girls, almost at the same time.

Aamras ka funda usually would have worked well but the lack of promotion and known faces works against it. Moreover, the film is not really fresh and it takes the filmi elements from the Bollywood of the 90s. The theme does work, but only in parts.

The storyline of Aamras revolves around four school girls Jiya, Pari, Rakhi and Sanya. They all are very close friends and strike a unique chord at a renowned Mumbai school.

The girls manage to hold your attention well in the first half but the second half is a complete wash off. A sheer waste of time. Unnecessary emotions become very heavy for the film to carry till the end – result it falls flat.

Actingwise, the four girls do a decent job but this film will not get them a new offer as it does not prove their potential. The other actors are okay.

Overall, the film lacks the attention of the masses to make it a success. Watch it only if you have an eye for nuts!

EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI

Aagey se Right is the movie based on the real life prevalence and the situation we live in Mumbai. It is the story of a cop and a terrorist played by Shreyas Talpade(Dhinkar Waghmare) and Kay Kay Menon (Janubhai Alias Balma Rishidui Khairi).

On one hand the movie revolves around Dinkar Waghmare, a sub-inspector and son of a police officer and a typical irritating mother who wants her son to achieve something in life. But soon mayhem follows and Dinkar loses service revolver. The search for the gun begins and Dinkar comes face to face with underworld goons and the mafia. Fortune favours Dinkar and becomes a hero.

On the other side there is wicked, nasty terrorist Janubhai Alias Balma Rishidui Khairi(Kay Kay Menon) who comes to Mumbai to carry out terror missions. But the chord of love strikes and Janu falls in love with an aspiring actress and a popular Bar Dancer Pearl (Shenaz Trasurywala).

To start with, the script of the movie is really weak and vague. The humour in the movie is sad and completely intolerable. The exchange of one-liners between Maurya and Kay Kay as to how to impress a girl are really sleazy and unbearable.

The songs don’t fit in the movie and make you feel as they have been forcefully fit in the movie for the sake of it. Direction by Indrajit Nattoji is an absolute failure and falls short to make use of talented actors like Shreyas Talpade and Kay Kay Menon.

Blaming the script and the person behind the camera, Shreyas fails this time to make any impression and Kay Kay’s flair is wasted. Mahie Gill’s role makes no sense and Shenaz Treasurywala gains few accolades for her good looks.

On a whole the movie takes you directionless!

Movie Review: Three (2009)

Cast: Akshay Kapoor, Ashish Chowdhry, Naushad Ali Sardar

Director: Vishal Pandya

Producer: Vikram Bhatt

EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI

Vikram Bhatt’s thriller Three- Love, Lies, Betrayal, directed by Vishal Pandya is a story about three people – Rajeev Dutt (Akshay Kapoor), his wife Mrs.Anjini Dutt (Naushad Ali Sardar) and a tenant in their house Sanjay (Ashish Chowdhry).

The story revolves around Anjini Dutt (Naushad Ali Sardar) who is married to Rajeev Dutt. Anjini, a violin teacher runs the house through her earnings. Rajeev is unable to earn much so he lives on his wife’s money. This inability of Rajeev to earn much, sets an ego between him and his wife, and is the reason for Rajeev’s frustration that keeps him angry all the time.

Eventually one fine day, Rajeev asks Anjini to sell her house and give him money for investing in some business. However Anjini refuses as the house was the only connection to her parents who are no more. Nevertheless she decides to help her husband by giving a portion of her house on rent and giving him this money for investment in business.

With Sanjay’s (Ashish Chowdhry) entry in their house takes a tremendous turn and the thrill starts. Slowly Sanjay learns about the ongoing tension between the couple and he starts sympathizing Anjini. His sympathy ignites love in Anjini and she falls for Sanjay.

The rest of the film tries to unfold the triangle love story between Anjini, Sanjay and Rajeev

Vishal Pandya’s direction is amazing and highly appreciating. A true masterpiece on his debut and has left no stone unturned. However commenting on the script, it could have been more powerful and interesting.

Music is just below average and the lyrics are ordinary. Raju Rao’s background score adds more excitement and inquisitiveness to the movie. The dialogues by Vikram Bhatt are influential and extremely remarkable.

Naushad’s acting is fairly convincing, Akshay Kapoor is decent and for the first time you will see Ashish Chowdhry in some serious role.

On the whole Three is an above average movie and will be interesting to see how it fairs in the multiplexes.

Radiosargam Movie Rating: 6/10

The main problem with ‘Love Kichadi’, which is out today, is that it has been stretched and due to this the outcome emerges worst for the viewers. The flick appears to be a collection of romantic moments, which have been collected and then displayed on the screen by the director.

The flick pours light on the women who come in and out of the leading protagonist’s life. A metro-centric subject, this could have worked wonders if the length of the film would have been limited to 1.30 hours whereas it is of above two hours. Thus this Kichadi is not tasty at all.

Vir (Randeep Hooda) is a bachelor from small town. He works as a chef in a hotel in Mumbai. He happens to be a smart, charming and brawny man. He flirts with, yeans for, lusts after and is intimidated by one beautiful woman after another. From his man-hating maid Shanta Bai (Sonali Kulkarni), whom he ogles as she wipes his floor to the man-eating Nafisa (Kalpana Pandit), the powerful call-center executive, from the beauty-with-brains Sharmishta (Rituparna Sengupta) to the pretty and playful Parminder (Divya Dutta), Vir is drawn to them all.

His buddy Sandhya (Sada) supports him in all these actions. He takes her for granted till it is too late.

The flick lets the viewer see the lifestyle of a section of today’s youth, who likes to have fun in life but without commitment. The movie projects the flirtatious nature of the chef who believes in this formula of have fun minus commitment. This all adds spices to his life.

Except the portions of maid servant (Sonali Kulkarni) and adolescent neighbor (Riya Sen), the other women’s characters disappoint. Rituparna Sengupta’s hiding the married status till the end does not absorb, as there was not any reason to do so. Sada’s role is confusing. Had she revealed her feelings earlier, the time would have been saved.

The director Srinivas Bhashyam comes up with a fine plot, but could not generate it well on screen. Music by Pritam is mundane. Script is poor. Other portions of the film have no sparks at all.

Randeep Hooda does well. Sonali Kulkarni and Sada appear great with the acting. Other ladies do not attract at all.

On the whole, ‘Love Kichadi’ is a tasteless dish. So why to bad taste your mouth? Avoid it.

Director Puneet Sira’s Kissan starring Sohail Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Jackie Shroff, Diya Mirza, Nauheed Cyrusi and Dalip Tahil, is out now. The flick has not been hyped hugely and even many were not aware of the release. Anyway, it cannot be claimed to be a bad flick rather it works.

Dayal Singh (Jackie Shroff) is a widower and a farmer in a village in Punjab. He lives with his two sons – Jigar (Sohail Khan) and Aman (Arbaaz Khan). When someone suggests him to send his son for a higher education to city, he sends Aman while Jigar stays with him back in village. On completion of education, Aman becomes a lawyer whereas Jigar becomes a Kissan (farmer) like his father. Sohan Seth (Dalip Tahil) an ambitious businessman arrives in Dayal’s village with a plan to set up his mega industrial project. He tries to lure the villagers to sell of their lands to him and offers them good compensation. But once Sohan comes to know that the big hurrdle in his way is Dayal since he has big influence on the villagers, he designs a scheme to break his family and his influence on the villagers. What happens next forms the story…

Previously Puneet Sira could not ignite magic with the audiences in ‘I Proud to Be an Indian’ and ‘Jai Veeru’, but this time he handles the subject on the celluloid with maturity and conviction. Some sequences entice the most like the emtional moments between Jackie and Arbaaz and the ones shot in the darkness of night when Sohail with Sharat Saxena and Vishwajeet Pradhan hunt for the village ruffians responsible for Arbaaz’s wife Dia Mirza’s death.

Jackie Shroff’s meaty role attarcts and he does with finesse. Sohail Khan shows his tremendous performance as an actor. Arbaaz Khan seems okay. Diya Mirza looks gorgeous and acts well. Nauheed Cyrusi is impressive. Dilip Tahil enacts the part with aplomb. Rest of the cast does fine as well.

While Steven had planned a decent funeral, all hell breaks lose with quirky guests trickling in one by one. Be it his self centered novelist brother Brian (Ashish), his cousin sister Maria (Tulip) with her boyfriend Michael (Aftab) who gets mistakenly doped because of her brother Harry’s (Chunkey) pills, henpecked hubby Carlos (Javed Jaffrey) with his forever suspicious wife Jenny (Kim), a fouled mouthed uncle Murphy (Prem Chopra) and a wannabe model Ayesha (Sophie) who arrives at the wrong place at the wrong time. Stevan’s wife Nancy (Aarti Chabbria) invites an estate agent to book a new falt for them immediately. There is a suspecious visitor Andrew (Rajpal Yadav) too there, who intrigues Stevan. Stevan is shocked to hear when Andrew announced that he was his dead father’s gay lover. Andrew demands huge money to keep his mouth shut. Mix-ups and chaos happen next and it all leads to a bigger mess.

The filmmakers have already uttered that ‘Daddy Cool’ is a remake of the British Comedy, ‘Death at a Funreal’. But they could not settle even to the shadow of the Britsih comedy. The humor injected in the flick does not spread smiles and laughters. It does not work at all. The unnecessary characters like Vrajesh Hirjee have been given extra time on screen. The humor leaves your mouth with bad taste. Imagine Prem Chopra shitting on Javed Jaffrey’s hands and he brandishing it on screen. Aftab’s doped out act appears funny initially, especially when he meets Sunil Shetty’s mom and smooches her. The emotional moments placed at the end reels, seem forced into th narrative. The movie appears like a play because most of the things take place in the same house. The dierction is ordinary. The cinemotography is poor. Script is a big flaw. Music disturbs ears.

Kim Sharma, Tulip Joshi and Aarti Chabbria deliver somewhat good jobs.

The flick tells the story of a group of friends, who on their way back from vacation luckily find a big booty. They decide to divide the amount equally amongst themselves and go their own ways. But destiny has some other plans in store for them. This free booty emerges as a big nightmare for each and everyone. Now not just the real owners of the money but even the police are behind them. They all begin to have tussles among themselves over it. What follows next forms the story…

The story and screenplay appear to be utterly weak. The story seems heart-hitting when seen on the papers. But exceuting it on the screen is a hard thing to do. And that exactly happens with this film. Direction by the debutante Ramesh Khatkar is so poor that you begin to think, as to what the director wants to portary. Music is very disappointing.

None of the stars even dared to impress you. Asmit Patel still needs to learn the acting techniques. Prashant Raj appears feeble. MTV VJ Ranvijay is the one whom every cinegoer would like to kick out of the flick. Enduring him on the screen is a much difficult task to do. Nonetheless viewers did it. All the gals do not show any sign of acting. The names like Mahesh Manjerakar and Sushant Singh are the only ones, who did somewhat better.

‘Toss’ should be avoided.

Movie Review: Quick Gun Murugun
Director: Shashanka Ghosh

Cast: Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Nasser, Rambha, Anu Menon and Vinay Patakh

‘Quick Gun Murugun’ is ready for your entertainment. In this venture, the hero and the villain are at loggerheads. The flick tells the story of a fight between vegetarian and non-vegetarian.

The villain likes to make the best dosa in town and abducts the women, who have skills to make a perfect delicious dosa.

It’s not a stereotypical flick, but the fact remains that this movie borrows from all stereotypical flicks, which made Hindi cinema different from the rest of the world. In short, ‘Quick Gun Murugun’ is a ground-breaking project in all respects.

Quick Gun Murugun (Dr. Rajendra Prasad) is an unlikely superhero. A sincere South Indian cowboy, Quick Gun Murugun finds it his duty to serve and protect. The whole flick revolves around the misadventures of Quick Gun Murugun. It pours light on Quick Gun Murugun’s fight with the arch villain Rice Plate Reddy (Nasser). Quick Gun Murugun steps into an epic battle, which spans time and space, from a small South Indian village to Swarglok and then finally to the cosmopolitan Mumbai. He starts swinging between Mango Dolly (Rambha), who loves him dearly and his first love Locket Girl (Anu Menon). His loyalty’s test comes.

The film shows a war between evil and good. The characterization is straight out of the 1970s. Director Shashanka Ghosh deserves good marks for choosing a novel subject like this. The execution of the theme on the screen is splendid.

Apart from the praises, there are flaws also. The big one is much use of Tamil. Although it is explained by sub-titles, nonetheless it appears tough for the audiences who live outside the Tamil areas.

Dr. Rajendra Prasad is a treat to watch. Nasser is fantastic. Rambha excels in her role. Anu Menon is superb. Vinay Pathak and Ranvir Shoery have brief roles but attract. Rest of the cast is fine also.

On the whole, ‘Quick Gun Murugun’ is great. An innovative subject, it will appeal to the masses.

RS Rating: 3/5

We have seen a number of films made on the troubles of children affected by the society, poverty and conflict. Director Piyush Jha’ Sikandar too follows the subject of conflict in Kashmir (without taking sides) where a kid becomes a pawn of politicians and terrorists. A lot has been witnessed in newspapers and on television about the kids who are being used in the name of religion. ‘Sikandar’ travels on this theme.

Although the cinegoers have watched abundant of films on these kinds of subjects, but ‘Sikandar’ is refreshingly different. On Hindi celluloid, the story like this has rarely been told before. Undoubtedly the thought is novel to tell on screen, but the culprit is screenplay, which does not do complete justice to the idea. The movie attracts you in bits but not completely. The culmination does not come up to the expectations. In short, ‘Sikandar’ could have been made a brilliant flick. But sorry to mention, it falls flat. It leaves you somewhere in the middle where you start wondering as to where to go!

Sikandar (Parzaan Dastur) is a 14 years old school boy, who lives in Kashmir. Ever since his parents were killed by militants 10 years back, he has lived with his aunt and uncle, in a small town in Kashmir. One day, while returning to home from school, he finds a gun lying on the path. He picks it up and there starts the journey into the darker side of his nature. Nasreen (Ayesha Kapur), his school friend, becomes his conscience keeper. She tries to dissuade him from giving in to the lure of the gun. But Sikandar gets involved deeply in situations beyond his control. As the layers starts unveiling, it becomes vivid that Sikandar is the innocent victim in this game being played out between the militants, politicians and the religious heads of Kashmir.

In the beginning, you realize that the film is not a usual kind of terrorism flick. But when Parzaan picks up a gun from the path, it becomes interesting for the viewer. The scene when Parzaan interacts with Arunoday Singh (terrorist), the viewer gets involved into the movie thoroughly from then on but this all continues till the first half. As soon as the second half begins, the film loses interest level.

The originality disturbs when the film changes paths from being a sensitive saga to a suspense thriller.

The flick does register an impact but only for some sequences like when the blast takes place (pre-climax).

The screenplay is no meaty. It carries many flaws like the ones when an army officer gives a gun to Sikandar to avenge his father’s death and when the politician’s daughter has a change of heart in the end.

The direction by Piyush Jha is okay. The cinematography is eye pleasing. The scenic beauty of Kashmir has been captured brilliantly and that’s what you like in the film.

Parzaan displays his histrionics. Madhavan does a fine job. Sanjay Suri enacts well. Ayesha is okay. Arunoday Singh’s debut is fine.

On the whole, ‘Sikandar’ is not a brilliant film to talk big about. It could have been great if the screenplay would have been penned with care.
