Shocking hits in the form of Race (count Singh is Kinng from my side), disastrous releases in the shape of Tashan, Love Story 2050, Drona, Mission Istanbul, Yuvvraaj and surprise box office wonders like Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, Rock On!, Fashion and Jannat. And to top it all, the last month of the passing year delivers the all-time biggies of Bollywood. If that’s not all, then what else sums up the Bollywood box office for 2008?

It was difficult enough to decide the top 20 films for the last year merely on the basis of their box office success. Therefore, taking into account critical reviews and the popularity quotient as well, we have a compilation of the best earners of the last year. The films which could not make it to the list but deserve a mention include: A Wednesday and Aamir. Apart from a few, it was impossible to differentiate between good cinema and brain-dead narration. And yes, the list does include some of the duds of the last year. No surprises, right? Read on…

Cast: Ajay Devgan, Kajol, Karan Khanna, Isha Sharwani, Sumeet Raghavan, Divya Dutta, Milind Pathak, Sachin Khedekar

Director: Ajay Devgan

Producers: Ajay Devgan

Music: Vishal Bharadwaj

Background Music: Monty Sharma

Cinematography: Aseem Bajaj

Editor: Dharmendra Sharma

Story: Ajay Devgan, Akash Khurana, Robin Bhatt, Sutanu Gupta

This Devgan home production promised and delivered less. The directorial debut of Ajay Devgan got a poor opening despite the pairing of the real-life married couple, Ajay and Kajol. The film ran into poor weather soon and earned a mere below average rating at the box office. The film opened at just 470 screens earned a net gross of Rs. 22.69 Cr at the box office in its 6+ weeks show.

Synopsis:

Ajay is on a cruise with his friends and is having a whale of a time, when he finds Pia, a crew member, and time stands still. It is love at first sight for him, but Pia is not too impressed with his very obvious ways of trying to woo her. However, Ajay doesn’t give up and Pia has no choice but to finally give in. The two soon get married. Their marriage flourishes until one day their world comes crashing down when Pia is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Ajay’s senior psychiatrist friend convinces him to admit her to his care centre as there is no point of return for her. Unwilling at first, Ajay relents, although half-heartedly, and puts his wife in the facility despite her pleas to take her back home.

Here was a film which despite good performances and a grasping storyline lost at the box office. From Ajay Devgan’s impressive directorial debut to the film’s ode to the sensitivity of relationships, the film had it all to leave a mark. But, the film bombed miserably leaving me wondering whether we have stopped appreciating quality cinema. Next…

What do the big 4 Khans have in store for you the fans, in 2008… Let’s take a brief look…

Shah Rukh Khan will not be seen as a major hero in any 2008 movie. He only has 2 films slated for release, and in both of them he has bit roles. In Bhootnath he plays the father of a child who plays around with ghosts while in Dulha Mil Gaya he will be seen sharing a couple of scenes with Sushmita Sen. However, 2009 will be a bumper year for fans of King Khan, as the much talked about terrorist thriller directed by Karan Johar is planned for release, and a possible film with Hrithik Roshan for the Yash Raj label.

As with any other year, 2008 will be another one with many films starring Salman Khan. He has three big-budget flicks… Main Yuvraaj directed by Subhash Ghai. In this he is expected to play the younger brother to an autistic Anil Kapoor. Prabhu Deva’s Wanted – Dead Or Alive is an action flick with a little comedy, while Rumi Jaffrey’s God Tussi Great Ho is a supernatural comedy where Salman Khan’s character is gifted God-like powers.

Aamir Khan has a very busy 2008, albeit he will be seen on-screen in only one film. A R Murugadoss will be directing Ghajini (the actual title of this film has yet to be confirmed) where he will be seen sharing screen space with another Khan, Jiah! Aamir will also be introducing his nephew Imraan Khan in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na.

Quite probably the busiest Khan in 2008 would be Saif Ali Khan. First up for him are two action flicks, Abbas-Mustan directed Race, and the much looked-forward to Tashan. Roadside Romeo and a yet untitled Kunal Kohli should be releasing towards the end of the year. He will be paired opposite Rani Mukherjee in the latter, which is rumored to be an Indian version of Mary Poppins.

After 2006, expectations were sky-high for the following year 2007. Though 2007 proved to be a mixed bag of hits and misses, 2008 is expected to be a good year for Bollywood.

The year promises: much-awaited comebacks from not only actors (Kajol-Ajay in U,Me Aur Hum) but also production houses (Rakesh Roshan’s production in Krazzy 4, Subhash Ghai for Main Yuvraaj); juicy casting (read pairings) in films like Race, Tashan (Saif- Kareena), Maan Gaye Mughal-e-Azham (Mallika Sherawat-Rahul Bose), Bhootnath (Amitabh Bachchan as ghost friend), Kismet Konnections (Vidya-Shahid) and high profile releases in the form of mega budget ventures like Jodhaa Akbar, Sarkar Raaj, Heroes, Drona, Kambakht Ishq, Race, Tashan, Main Yuvraaj, Ghajini, Singh is King etc. And that’s a big etc.!!

With so much to expect from, it won’t be a bad idea to play a guessing game with the big releases that will hit the screens this year. Hopefully, like last year, we hit the bull’s eye again!

Musically, the year was dominated by both foot-tapping dance numbers and equally by soft, soothing tracks. There were albums which did tremendously well and boosted up the pre-release and post-release promotions of the films and there were albums which did well despite the film’s poor show at the box office.

Some of the most successful soundtracks of the year were dance hits from Om Shanti Om, Partner, Jab We Met, Heyy Babyy etc. And then there were melodious tracks from Life In a Mtero, Saawariya, Namastey London, Guru etc. The soulful numbers made you hum to their tunes every time you missed your beloved and then the groove was on with some of the hit tracks blazing out loud once you hit the floors with her/him. The year gave you Dard-e-Disco, Soni De Nakhre and then Tere Bina, In Dino to cherish and enjoy.

A special mention for the tracks which did well and were among the most requested tracks on most of the radio stations, namely; Shakira Ve (Fool n Final, Pritam), Woh Ajnabee (The Train, Mithoon), Tadap (Darling, Himesh Reshammiya), Thaare Vaaste (Shakalaka Boom Boom, Himesh Reshammiya), Cash (Cash, Vishal-Shekhar), Tera Mera Milna ( Aap Ka Suroor, Himesh Reshammiya). Rafta-Rafta ( Namastey London, Himesh Reshammiya)and Salaam-e-Ishq (Salaam-e-Ishq, Shankar –Ehsaan-Loy).

The Top 20 Bollywood songs of 2007 are:

Unlike last year, 2007 was not a very fruitful year for Bollywood barring some of the biggest releases and some above average shows at the box office.

The box office collections soar high for some of the biggest openers ever in the form of Om Shanti Om, Chak De! India, Partner, Heyy Babyy, Guru, Bhool Bhulaiya etc. Then there were low budget films that did beyond the expected business this year. And then there were films which were overly hyped and proved to be box office debacles like Salaam-e-Ishq, Eklavya, Ram Gopal Verma Ki Aag, Saawariya etc.

The year was a mixed bag of hits and misses piling up each month with some films hitting the marquee and some losing the limelight without trace. Here, we look back at 2007’s domestic box office story, its highs and lows and its biggest openers and biggest losers.

It was one of the biggest years music wise in Bollywood, what with Om Shanti Om, Partner, and The Train. Now, 2008 looks like to be an even bigger and more successful year. All your top composers will be out to play, and each one has a sensational soundtrack or two to hand. Here, in this 2008 special, we look forward to what the music directors have in-store for us, and which singer could be making another impact.

2007 belonged to Pritam, who had a handful of super-hit soundtracks. For 2008, the maestro has even more planned. Race, Kidnap, Kutty Chetan, Jannat, and Fauj Mein Mauj. Not forgetting the already released, and receiving rave reviews, My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves.

Aap Ka Surroor was regarded as a sensational album, and now eager ears are looking forward with delight to Karzzz. Not sure if Himesh will be able to create the same hoo-ha as the music of the original did, but one thing is for sure, Reshammiya will sure set-fire again. The musician-turned-actor also has Mr. Fraud in the pipeline.

For many a year Anu Malik was regarded as the most reliable composer in the industry, however his recent lack of hit scores have tarnished that tag. 2008 he is back with a bang, with multiple projects planned. Victory, Tere Sang, Kambakht Ishq, Love Story 2050, Mission Istanbul, Woodstock Villa, Ugly Aur Pagli, and Maan Gaye Mughal0e-Azam, to name a few. Not only that, but Anu Malik’s off-spring Anmol Anu Malik will be singing six songs for Tere Sang.

Om Shanti Om duo Vishal and Shekhar, Taare Zameen Par’s Shankar Ehsaan Loy, veteran pop-ster Bappi Lahiri, going solo Lalit Pandit (of Jatin-Lalit fame), and ever-reliable Rajesh Roshan, will all be around in 2008.

Singing-wise we will be hearing more of those Pakistani voices, M Ali and Kami of Suroor band are two. Zubeen Garg and KK are to be featured on many soundtracks, and of course the fantastic four, Sunidhi Chauhan, Sonu Nigam, Udit Narayan, and Alka Yagnik.

That’s 2008 for you, playback music wise… what are your thoughts on this coming year and the music it will bring. Do you believe we will get to hear even better tunes than what we heard in 2008, or does the list above look a little bleak for you? Leave your views and thoughts and in the comments section below.

At last some author-backed roles for the female brigade of Bollywood! The year saw some of the finest performances by actresses in roles that challenged the acting capabilities of the best. I dedicate this feature on the best beauties of the year to two actresses who matched the actors, scene by scene and saved the face of many faltering productions. Vidya Balan and Rani Muherjee are easily the best of what we have in the filmdom today and the performances speak for themselves. From Bhool Bhulaiya to Heyy Babyy to Eklavya, Vidya Balan’s journey has been progressive and impressive. And Rani, being the original queen of Bollywood, was the lone savious of box office debacles like Saawariya and Laga Chunari Mein Daag.

Other actresses who had a successful year were Katrina Kaif who hits a hattrick this year along with debutant Deepika Padukone, Kareena Kapoor, Shilpa Shetty and Aishwarya Rai who were one film wonders but immensely popular off-screen as well.

The top 5 actresses have been chosen based on the box office success of their films, their popularity quotient and performances.

Among cluster of stars, some stars shone bright with powerful roles and some with the simplicity of a seasoned craftsman. Unlike last year, 2007 belongs to the old horses of Bollywood who gave a brave show at the box office proving their critics wrong once again. There were one film wonders and stars which managed multiple hits at the box office. But overall, a year which belonged to Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar alike. From the super success of Om Shanti Om and Chak De! India, one is forced to take notice of the King Khan’s star power. Akshay Kumar manages to strike a hattrick with back-to-back hits. Sanjay Dutt continued to rule the hearts of the masses along with Salman Khan who made a super comeback in the top slot with Partner. Lastly, Abhishek Bachchan gave the performance of a lifetime in Guru, something I can’t stop raving about.

Other than these success stories, there were actors who were equally popular, less successful but worth a mention, namely, Amitabh Bachchan for Eklavya and Cheeni Kum; Shahid Kapoor for Jab We Met and Fool ‘n’ Final; and Saif Ali Khan for Ta Ra Rum Pum and Eklavya.

As the year 2007 bids us goodbye, like always, we bring you the successful films that rocked the box office this year. The year, unlike last year, wasn’t that successful in terms of collections at the domestic ticket counter but few films managed a great show, generally due to extensive marketing, large number of screenings and yes, a moving script in the end.

The top 20 for this year is a mixed bag including films from all genres which were successful at the box office and got great reviews. Some of the films which are seen at the lower spots are due to the less number of weeks they were screened for and the delayed date of release.

The films which have not been included in the countdown but deserve a mention due to their good collections and some being low-budget wonders are, namely; Bheja Fry, Dhol, Cheeni Kum, Life… In A Metro, Naqaab and Honeymoon Travel Pvt. Ltd.

The top 20 gives you a detailed account of the films’ business, reviews and its rating by the trade pundits.

Here is the countdown of the Top 20 Box Office hits in the UK this past year (2007). The countdown has been collated on the basis of each film’s collections in the UK alone.

Do have a nice read through, and once you are done, we would like your feedback. Please use the comments section at the bottom of the page to send us your views.

20. Shakalaka Boom Boom
Touted as the movie version of the war between Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, this Bobby Deol starrer did just as its title said… Boom! It collected a meager £163,914.

19. Dhamaal
A year in which comedy movies made moolah at the Box Office, this multi-starrer was no exception. Making £235,282 helped it enter our charts at number 19. Not much Dhamaal, but in the end good value for money; distributors got their money back.

18. Saawariya
Released on Diwali weekend, this Sanjay Leela Bhansali bore suffered at the hands of Om Shanti Om. It could have made more had the story been a little more exciting, instead it took home £319,585.

17. Aaja Nachle
The last in the line of numerous Yash Raj Films flops this year, this Madhuri Dixit return vehicle started well but ran out of petrol soon after. Only £368,120 collected.

16. Cheeni Kum
Sleeper hit of the year, this senior-citizen/middle aged romance proved to be an engaging flick. Amitabh Bachchan can still manage a hit, this one managed £385,400.

It happened as it was expected; the biggest blockbuster of 2007, Shah Rukh Khan headlined Om Shanti Om, bagged 6 awards at the RS/TB Bollywood Awards 2007.

It happened as it was expected; the biggest blockbuster of 2007, Shah Rukh Khan headlined Om Shanti Om, bagged 6 awards at the RS/TB Bollywood Awards 2007.

The film overcome stiff opposition from another Shah Rukh Khan starrer, the sports flick Chak De India, to become Best Film. It’s director Farah Khan got the Best Director award, again after another close fight with Shimit Amin and Chak De India, while Arjun Rampal and Deepika Padukone were crowned Best Actor/Actress in A Villainous Role and Best Debut Actress respectively. And to top it all of, the soundtrack of Om Shanti Om, composed by duo Vishal-Shekar was Best Music of 2007, and Ajab Si was Best Song.

Shah Rukh Khan would have won Best Actor for his double role in Om Shanti Om, had it not have been for… wait for it… Shah Rukh Khan. The Best Actor category competition was only between his role in Om Shanti Om and Chak De India. The portrayal of the shamed but in the end hero Kabir Khan won him that gong. The award for Best Story was also given to Chak De India.

Rejuvenated actress Kareena Kapoor’s charecterisation of the happy-go-lucky lass Geet in Jab We Met got her the Best Actress title. Irrfan Khan and Konkona Sen Sharma won Best Actor and Best Actress in Supporting Roles for the same movie, Life In A Metro. Born again actor Govinda returned with a bang and got a much deserved award for Best Actor/Actress in A Comical Role for Partner.

What was unexpected, was the award for Best Debut Actor, going to grand-son of singer Mukesh, Neil Mukesh. The actor’s first role in a Bollywood flick in Johnny Gaddar was appreciated more than Ranbir Kapoor’s Saawariya.

The Mani Ratnam directed Guru got two music awards, Best Lyrics (Gulzar – Tere Bina) and Best Playback Singer Female (Shreya Ghoshal – Barso Re). Popular fan favourite Himesh Reshammiya bagged the Best Playback Singer Male award for his rendition of Assalmu in Aap Ka Suroor.

10. No Smoking
A smart movie with a good theme but one that proved to be a little too much for the audience to inhale.

9. Laaga Chunari Mein Daag
Good performances from Rani Mukherjee and Jaya Bachchan were unable to keep the veil from flying away.

8. Aaja Nachle
The Dhak Dhak girl Madhuri Dixit returned with a superb display of acting, but the story lacked substance and therefore no one danced.

7. Tara Rum Pum
It was supposed to be a feel-good-factor film, but ended up being part chick-flick and part Tara Bomb Bomb.

6. Jhoom Bararar Jhoom
Abhishek Bachchan and Lara Dutta were good, but the film’s script was nothing to jhoom along with.

5. Eklavya – The Royal Guard
A fantasticly made film, with flawless performances, but the theme was one not for the Indian audience.

4. Marigold
Heroes babe Ali Larter looked out of place in India, while Salman Khan seemed like he was sleep-acting.

3. Salaam-E-Ishq
A million and one actors were unable to save this love vessel from hitting an iceberg and sinking.

2. Saawariya
Touted as the biggest release of 2007, this Sanjay Leela Bhansali film had just a little too much of the me thinks blues.

1. Ram Gopal Verma Ki Aag
The modern-day remake of the classic Sholay couldn’t keep the flames alight because it was simply… rubbish!

5. Govinda

When he made his entry into Bollywood movies, more than 20 years back, this young actor was touted as the next big thing. And, during the 90’s he was a force to be reckoned with. However, Govinda’s career suffered heavily due to his constant comedy flicks and the audience finally got bored.

But, not being one to retire quietly, our Chi Chi returned in 2007. Aided by close friend Salman Khan, Govinda managed to bag two big budget flicks (Salaam-E-Ishq and Partner). Although Salaam-E-Ishq didn’t do that well at the Box Office, Govinda’s scenes were appreciated. But it was not until the middle of the year and the mega success of Partner that really brought back this king of comedy.

Things are now looking up for Govinda as 2008 will see him headline many films as a sole star. All thanks to Sallu then!

5. Kareena Kapoor

A slow year for this Bollywood beauty, only one release, but nevertheless a towering performance in that. Kareena Kapoor was more in the news because of her personal life, but towards the end of the year her acting did get some mentioning.

Initially doing a rocking item number, she headlined a romantic feel-good-factor flick that became the sleeper hit of 2007. Co-starring with Shahid Kapur, Jab We Met showed us all that this girl from the Kapoor clan does indeed have those special genes. In the months to come, her name will be listed amongst the very best actresses of 2007, and she surely deserves that.

In 2008 Kareena has a good few films planned, and we hope that her run of good form continues.

The end of the year is upon us once again, and once again it is the time to compile a list of the most successful and intriguing movies of the year.

2007 has seen its fair share of hits and misses. Films like Om Shanti Om and Apne were touted as being the blockbusters of 2007, but did they manage to fulfil their destinies.
