I still imagine myself to be 18 or 22. The other day I was at the birthday of someone who I had always thought of as older than me in my head, an uncle type person. I asked him, how old he was that day and he said 30 and I got a shock because suddenly I realised that I was 14 years older than him. I am, of course, 44, which is middle-aged, but somewhere in my head I am lost in the 18-20 age group.

• In 3 Idiots you play a guy from 20 to 24 years, while you are actually 44. How old are you in your head?

jumping sexes like my playing a woman is always tough. I had actually told Raju to take someone younger but he insisted he could see me in the role. He said, “In real life, you are so close to Rancho, (the character that I am playing) I feel if you are saying what Rancho is saying people will believe it. What Rancho says is the philosophy of the film and I need someone who people will believe in.”

• You exude a lot of confidence on screen. Are you really a very confident person inside?
I think I am average, in the sense that most people are confident to a certain degree, people go through self doubt. I too go through self doubt. I am given to thinking, “Am I doing the right thing?” I only do things that I enjoy, that’s my first rule. I must be happy in what I am doing. If I am not happy doing an ad, I won’t do it. I don’t do it for commercial reasons. Yes of course I am earning money while I am doing it, but that’s not the core reason for doing it. This ultimately shows in my work, otherwise I am as confident or diffident as the next man. I also need reassurance like everyone else. I also need people to say “I liked your film”.

• When you were directing yourself in Taare Zameen Par was there anything about you as an actor that disturbed you as a director?
I have to say no. The actor and director in me saw eye to eye. Yes, when I see the film today, there are moments where I feel the scene could have been pitched differently. But that is in retrospect. That’s the corrective process in me when I am watching any of my work.

• In hindsight which of your successful films needed the most correction?
One of them would be Fanaa, the other would be Ishq, both highly successful films. In the first half of Fanaa, the character was pitched too filmy. I would have pitched him slightly different. In fact, Kunal (Kohli) and I had a long discussion about it. I would have made the character more real and more layered because as human beings we don’t have a singular emotion. When I am playing a character my attempt is that it should not be single dimensional, it should be layered. Ishq again had a lot of broad strokes and it’s also a very successful film.

• As a director do you have an actor wish list?
I am not sure whether I am thinking as a director right now. I think at heart I am still an actor. Of course now that I have taken the first step and directed one film, I am more open to listening to stories. Actually I have a very strange answer. While I am not in the mood of a director just now the opposite is also true. I think like a filmmaker. Coming back to your question, my wish list would really depend upon what the script is. So my casting would really be based on who can best play a certain part and who will suit the role. Each and every person connected to the film should feel that he is in love with it.

• Does success isolate you?
Success can be extremely isolating. And often, for multiple reasons. When you are successful, a celebrity, especially an actor, your stardom is like a magnet. It’s like the sun. (In fact, I wonder who coined this term ’star’. Because every star is actually a sun). Because you are a star, every one is attracted to you for different reasons, some valid, some invalid. Some honourable, some not so honourable. But, as a human being our bandwidth is limited. So often what happens is that we need to shut off. It is humanly impossible to deal with so many things.

Have you noticed that stars, never make eye-contact when they are out in public. The moment you make eye-contact, you have to engage. And it’s not that we don’t like engaging. I love engaging with people. But I get tired. How many people can I engage with? That’s the nature of the beast. That’s the nature of my profession.

• You have been reportedly meeting people you met on social networking sites. Does engaging with them help you perform in some way?
Now people know that it’s me on the blog, but there was a time when they didn’t. The idea behind it was to interact with strangers. Because the minute a person knows who I am, he reacts to me in a particular way. He may or may not share certain ideas with me. Or the attitude of sharing will change. The fiber of the communication will change. But if the person doesn’t know who I am, which the Internet allows, then he’s freer. That was the kind of interaction I valued a lot. There were a few people who I found to be particularly engaging. Or unusual. And those were the few people to whom I revealed who I am.

If I felt that I had a certain rapport with someone, then I no longer felt comfortable hiding, or lying about who I am. If I have reached a level of engagement of this kind, I need to tell the person who I am. So then it happened that I took three-four people into confidence.

• Since you have just completed 3 Idiots with Raju Hirani, the director of the Munnabhai series, tell me an instant recall of a Munnabhai moment?
I would say jaadu ki jhappi. That’s my big recall moment from Munnabhai. Both, Munnabhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munnabhai are my favourite films in the last five-seven odd years. They are great wholesome entertainment, which connect with you on a human level. Really connect with you on a human level.

Going back to one of your earlier questions, one of the key reasons for me doing this film, despite the fact that I am double the age of the character is Raju. I was so keen to work with Raju and I could see that Raju was excited about casting me in the film. Iske saath mereko film karne hain yaar. Agar isko lagta hain main bees saal ka ho jaata hoon toh main ho jaata hoon. Kyunki ye itna kamaal ka director hai, iske saath mereko kaam karna hain yaar.

Over the years all my professional decisions have been absurd. Its absolutely right for someone to tell me – ke tu 42 ka hain aur tu 22 ka character play kar raha hain. It may be an idiotic decision but all my decisions are idiotic. 3 idiots ka idiotic decision.

When I told anyone that I was making a film on dyslexia, they said I was mad.

When I signed Rang De Basanti, usse pehle Bhagat Singh aur Azad Singh par char filmey aa chuki thi.

It was a crazy decision. My sister called me up in the evening and asked, “What are you doing?” I told her I signed a film, it’s the fifth remake of Bhagat Singh. She started laughing. She said abhi flop hui hain chauthi, aur tum paanchvi karoge. It was a bizarre decision.

Lagaan is another example. Today it is known as successful film but at that time it was a disastrous decision. None of my decisions have been practical.

• How easy or difficult it is to forgive past mistakes?
Earlier, I was much more unforgiving as a person; not only towards others but also towards myself. I was extremely unforgiving of my own mistakes. In the past four or five years, I have undergone a change as a human being. I have become more forgiving of myself and others. I see it as a very positive change in myself. One of the powerful things in the world is the power of forgiveness. Its what Jesus Christ and other great philosophers have said. Also, forgiveness comes with the genuineness of the person’s intentions. If someone has done something to hurt me and then comes and says, “Sorry Aamir”, but does not feel it, then forgiveness does not come into the picture. But if a person genuinely feels ki usse galti hui hai, then you should forgive him. It’s the same for yourself, if you realise that you’ve done some wrong, you should forgive yourself. It’s one of the most healing things. Today we have become very unforgiving people. It may be an ethnic problem, or a community’s problem or a country’s, or in your relationships, with your wife, children, parents, we get very very unforgiving and we hold that against them. We wear it as a badge which says ‘main tujhe kabhi maaf nahi karoonga’. I used to be like this.

TimesI still imagine myself to be 18 or 22.

• Did that help you play this character?
No. But given that it is necessary to get into the head of a character when you are jumping age lines, it gets more challenging. Jumping age lines, jumping accents, or

My workout regime
I love waking up early and most days when I do, I jog my way to the gym. I find working with weights extremely boring, so I do most of my workouts where I can use my own body as resistance. I try to make workouts interesting so there is no fixed regime as such. Spinning and swimming every alternate day is a must. I do yoga regularly since I find it very relaxing and it also helps me stretch.

My diet
As soon as I wake up, I have two glasses of water and follow that with a cup of green tea without sugar. Breakfast is a bowl of papaya, after which I head to the gym. Mid-morning I have an omelette of three white eggs with a multigrain toast. Lunch usually comprises boiled vegetables. I also make sure that I keep sipping on a lot of water throughout the day. Early evening I have a light snack, which is a couple of biscuits and green tea. I eat my dinner by six in the evening, which comprises boiled vegetables or a salad. I don’t eat after that. Sundays is the only day when I’m allowed to cheat. I watch what I eat and try not stray too much.

Happiness quotient
I believe in taking each day as it comes. I don’t find any point in stressing about tomorrow and letting today pass by. I live each day and learn to go with the flow and don’t let things get to me too much. I think when you are irritated by something, that irritation continues all day and you lose a very precious day in your life. Like the Bobby McFerrin number, my philosophy is ‘Don’t worry, be happy!’

My idea of relaxation
I travel a lot and seeing new places is the best way to unwind. There is nothing like going to a spa every once a while to reenergise and relax at the same time. Whenever I am free I try to spend time with my family and friends to go for dinners, movies and long drives. Football, music and photography are other passions that help me unwind.

JLo is probably eating her heart out. ‘Coz the new toast of the debonair circuit has slightly different initials — KJo. But envy won’t get her (or anyone else) anywhere, simply because Karan Johar has worked his butt off — planning, focusing and making his dad, Yash Johar’s banner, Dharma Productions, proud.

Suddenly it’s an unstoppable juggernaut. Dostana, Wake Up Sid, now Kurbaan with My Name Is Khan and Stepmom to follow, even as his team of directors is plotting the next scripts. “These young directors today, Tarun, Ayaan, Rensil, Siddharth and others directing for Dharma, they’re geniuses,” says the stylish producer. “They’re steps ahead of the way we thought earlier. They’ve taken cinema to another level. Look at the themes — comedy (Dostana), adolescence (Wake Up Sid), terror-sensitivity (Kurbaan), poignancy (MNIK) … it’s incredible. I only wish dad was with us today. To see us take his legacy of honesty and credibility forward. Yes, hits help us financially, but we’re not greedy. We also want to give back quality cinema with conviction and good viewing. Otherwise, right now I have only Kurbaan on my mind. I’m very excited about it because it has been a subject close to my heart for a while now and I’d been tossing it around in my head. Then I asked Rensil (D’Silva) to write it and develop it for me. And I was so taken by his passion for the subject, that I asked him to direct it himself. And the result is crackling.”

Elaborating on the November 20th release, Karan says, “The story addresses the perpetually looming threat of terrorism, the film lends emotion into that graph. It has a point of view. That’s the path. Of presenting this threat in a logically, emotionally, sensitively cinematic manner. I’m quite delighted with the final product.” But there had been a thought in Karan’s mind, some time ago, to cast SRK in the lead role in this subject. “Maybe it was a thought a long time ago. Simply because SRK is emotionally a part of everything I do. Even before I wake up to box office figures, Shah Rukh calls asking, ‘How’re the collections dude? … How’s it going?’ He’s part of Dharma. However, that said, after the way the film has shaped out, Saif and Kareena are ideal casting,” smiles KJo. And how dissimilar is My Name Is Khan from this subject? Isn’t that Karan-directed venture also a ‘terrorism’ subject? “Not at all. My Name Is Khan is totally different in as much it doesn’t deal with terrorism at all. That’s all media conjecture. Wait for that one as well.” What we couldn’t wait for was his response to Kareena’s recent joke that KJo was like a ‘witch’, that everything he said was almost prophetic. Karan couldn’t stop laughing: “We have this strange Karmic Connection and I feel the need to be as protective about her as ever. I love Kareena to death. We fight too. We didn’t speak for a year. I hurt her and she hurt me. But one only fights with those one loves. Now that we’re past the initial hurdles, we’re the best of friends. And you have to see her in the film to believe what she’s capable of. As for the ‘witch’ part, I wish I could prophesise the success of Kurbaan for starters … that’s all I pray!”

Hrithik Roshan’s movie Kites is generating a lot of curiosity, but it is also surrounded by many speculations. Filmmaker Rakesh Roshan clears the air…

Why has Kites been delayed?
Well there are two versions — the Hindi version that is two hours and six minutes, and the international version (English). The Indian version was ready on Sept 30, 2009. However, the English version is being supervised by the Hollywood director Brett Ratner. Ratner is a friend of mine, and he is formatting the English version according to the Western sensibilities.

Is this the first time that a mainstream Hollywood director will be ‘editing’ a Bollywood film?
Yes. Ratner has films like Rush Hour 1, 2 and 3 to his credit. He has directed A Family Man, and has done episodes of the TV series Prison Break. To get someone who is so sought after in Hollywood to step and personally supervise Kites is something very prestigious.

Have you set a release date yet?
We’ve not set a release date. It should come in the summer of 2010. I’m flying to Los Angeles on November 29 for a meeting with Ratner. The mixing and the background score for the English version is also being done there. I will announce a date only after I know what progress has been made. Kites is my most ambitious release. I’m looking at releasing almost 2,500 prints globally.

The buzz is that Hrithik is keen on a Hollywood career?
Hrithik is very happy with the work he is doing here. He is currently shooting with makers like Sanjay Leela Bhansali (Guzaarish), and he is also committed to make movies with Karan Johar, me and perhaps Vishal Bhardwaj. After watching Kites, Ratner felt that Hrithik has the potential to make it big in the West. So there is a definite possibility of his doing films there. But all that’s for a later date. Right now, Hrithik and I are both obsessed with Kites.

What is the difference between Vidya of Kismet Connection and Vidya of Paa and Ishqiya?
I know what you want to hear (laughs). To begin with, I have lost a lot of weight. I am feeling healthier and happier. Paa will see me in the Indian look. I am very excited about Paa and Ishqiya both. The change started by losing…yes, I had gained a bit of weight.

    At the wrong places?
(Laughs) Let me say it. It’s been a long journey. Full marks to my dietician Pooja Makhija and trainer Vilayat Hussain. I don’t even go to a gym. I train at home. I do a bit of cardio, weights and calisthenics. And I eat a lot more intelligently now.

After losing weight, why are you not seen in Western outfits?
I didn’t lose weight to wear suggestive outfits. I lost weight to feel better about myself. I enjoy wearing Indian clothes.

Don’t you therefore stand to lose roles? You have kissed in Ishqiya, you did a lovemaking scene in Heyy Baby, so why say no to ‘suggestive’ attire?
I will wear what is required. But you know, suggestive outfits tantamount to skin show and take away the meat from the character. I want the meat, not the bone.

Have you always avoided daring outfits? Even in your teens, college etc?
Yes. My friends wore what collegians mostly wear. But I didn’t join them. I stood alone, but I was happy. I do wear skirts, but not very short ones. And I don’t wear shorts, not even at home.

Back to your weight loss. Did the caustic comments about your weight finally get to you?
I won’t say that I was immune to them. But you see, I was going through a lot of confusion in my head on a lot of fronts. I started taking a few things for granted. I became complacent. And I lost interest. Till Kismet Connection, everything was going well for me and then suddenly…

That was when your friendship with Shahid Kapoor went haywire?
I don’t see the connection.

Connection with a ‘K’, eh! Okay, what triggered off the need to lose weight?
Well, my mom sat me down and told me that I needed to feel good about myself. I think that I was trying to be someone else. I was desperately trying to fit into a certain mould (pauses)

    Go on…
(Looks up at the ceiling) It was not about my weight and clothes. Those caustic comments were coming because I looked unhappy. I was exuding a certain amount of unhappiness.

    Why were you unhappy?
You know what…

    What?
If someone who matters to you talks you down, it can break you. That someone whose approval mattered to me started to constantly find faults with me. It started reflecting on me. At that point of time, it was important to walk away from that relationship. I don’t want to take his name.

Hmmm… I get it. Shahid doesn’t want to work with you now.
(Interrupts) Did I say that that I want to work with him? (pauses)

    Continue…
If someone doesn’t want to work with me, so be it. It’s his loss completely. There are other fish in the sea.

Your friendship with fashion designer Shabina Khan has gone sour. Once upon a time, she was your best friend.
One tends to spend a lot of time with people one works with. My best friends have been people I have grown up with.

She isn’t too fond of you now.
I don’t bother about how people feel about me. What matters to me is how I feel about them.

How do you feel about Shabina?

Though rumours of a break-up have been brewing for a while, it’s now clear that Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone have ended their relationship. Though various theories have been floating about the cause of their break-up, here’s the real reason why the two have parted ways.

Immediate speculation will point to Ranbir’s chemistry with Katrina Kaif. It’s hasty to pin the blame on Katrina though, as Deepika had seemed insecure before the pretty actress came into the picture. And it’s not Ma Kapoor that put the spanner in the works either.

Ranbir, after all, is a hot-blooded Kapoor. He is a natural charmer as far as women go and sooner or later, Deepika would have heard about his flirtations. Apparently, Ranbir isn’t too modest about it either. Discretion about his less-than-innocent encounters would’ve been highly advisable, but he hasn’t exactly been a posterboy for it so far. Common friends carried the news to Deepika, perhaps adding a bit of tadka for flavour.

This is when Deepika decided to call it off. Apparently, she told Ranbir to mend his ways since she had given a lot to this relationship. She had cut off ties with all her ‘good friends’ like Nihar Pandya and Yuvraaj Singh. So, she wanted Ranbir to give 100 per cent to the relationship as well. She kept hearing about his ‘friendship’ with Nandita Mahtani and other girls.

At this point of time, Ranbir started feeling suffocated in his relationship with Deepika. He asked for his space and Deepika justifiably wanted to know ‘What space? Aren’t we a couple?’

The final straw was hearing about his ‘crackling chemistry’ with Katrina. The next thing she did was to land up on the sets of Rajneeti in Bhopal, where Ranbir was shooting with Katrina. She stayed there for nearly two weeks.

After she came back from Bhopal, her relationship with Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh’s son was almost over. The crack first became evident at Shabina Khan’s birthday party two weeks ago where the two sat in different corners of the room.

And what about Neetu Singh? Mamma Neetu, who is said to have a very cold relationship with Deepika, did not play catalyst. A source says, “Neetu wants Ranbir to be happy. She will never go against his choice. Ranbir always treated Deepika as a girlfriend and not as someone special, basically there was no passion in their relationship.”

The thousand-strong crowd outside his sea-facing bungalow literally melted in the scorching November sun, their eyes hungry for just a glimpse of the man who rules Bollywood. The mayhem on November 2, Shah Rukh Khan’s birthday, had to be witnessed to be believed. The Bollywood Badshah may have had little to say at the box office in 2009, but his popularity is super intact. Excerpts from a conversation with the star who turned 44 on Monday…

Your looks belie your age!
Physically, I feel 25-26. But I have no problems in accepting that I’m 44. In fact, if I look good, then the media writes that I’ve done plastic surgery. Honestly, if I sleep well, then I look good. Last night I slept well.

This has been a year of mixed fortunes… I enjoyed Season II with my cricket team. I was a bit disappointed when we didn’t fare well, but I know we’ll bounce back. I didn’t have film releases with the exception of Billu which was special for me. I got a honourary doctorate from the University of Bedfordshire, won a couple of other honours. My Name is Khan will come in February 2010. I had my shoulder surgery that kept me out of action now I’m on the road to recovery. I spent quality time with my kids. I’m finishing my book 20 Years Of A Decade. It was an unfortunate physical year but a good emotional one.

Are there any specific thoughts on growing older?
Yes, I have been constantly thinking about what I can give back to people, to society. Allah has been kind to me, He has given me so much. I have just six to seven good friends in the industry. But the media is my friend. You are the ones who remind me of my birthday at least four-five days in advance. You have given me so much love, so has my audience. Now I want to do something in return. I want to bring a smile to the faces of youngsters. I don’t want to start an NGO, but I do wish to do something for the cause of the girl child… The feeling of wanting to give is stronger now than it has been. I think of life as work. I want to introspect as to which direction I should take my life in. I want to do something to save the environment. Honestly, I haven’t done my bit yet but I will start now.

What’s next as far as films go?
RA1. It is something I’m kicked about. It’s a film that children are going to love. It will have action, special effects and a super hero.

Did you receive any special gifts?
Yeah, Karan Johar gave me a lap top bag and a pair of very expensive shoes. My children are making something for me that will come over the weekend. Parmeshwar Godrej sent me a gift. She does that each year. One of my fans has bought me a piece of land on the moon, one has bought me land in Scotland. I’m accepting gifts till this weekend, so all of you who wish to give me something can do so till Sunday.

Bollywood's hottest actress right now, the beautiful Katrina Kaif has defended her liasons with megastar Shah Rukh Khan.

Bollywood’s hottest actress right now, the beautiful Katrina Kaif has defended her liasons with megastar Shah Rukh Khan.

One can remember that eventful night of July 2008 when Shah Rukh Khan crossed swords with Katrina Kaif’s boyfriend, playboy lothario Salman Khan. The war of words between the industry’s two biggest stars sent shockwaves across the world. On that day two camps were created, the Shah Rukh camp and and Salman camp. Those who were old time friends of Shah Rukh sided with him while the rest decided to talk up for Salman. Everyone had a word to say and everyone took sides. But one lady had to bear the biggest brunt of all… Salman Khan’s girlfriend Katrina Kaif.

For Katrina this was a huge problem caused not by herself. On the crisp of a career high, Katrina was all set to recieve the biggest accolade for a Bollywood starlet; a leading lady role oppisite King Khan Shah Rukh himself. She was offered a mega budget film by the biggest Bollywood banner, Yash Raj Films. Even entertaining the idea of starring opposite her boyfriend’s enemy number one was no-go for Kat. The next few months she dodged every question put to her regarding Shah Rukh Khan. Rather than turning down roles opposite him she just said she was ‘busy’. But now the scene has changed for her. She is now not on the crisp of a career high but is indeed riding way up there. With hit after hit no one can say that Katrina Kaif is a nobody. She has made a name for herself in a competitive market and not only that, but fast-tracked to the elite list of Bollywood heroines.

Now Katrina Kaif has decided to become bold and risky. She will not let her boyfriend come in-between her career. So she is letting the world know that she is ready to star opposite Mr. Shah Rukh Khan.

The first step to show this new Katrina Kaif was for the lady herself to bee seen at major parties mingling with none other than Shah Rukh Khan. Only last week the whole world witnessed Katrina and Shah Rukh together at two different parties within days of each other, Subhash Ghai and Pinky Roshan’s respective birthday celebrations. When the media asked her about this, and what Salman Khan would make of it, Katrina replied, “I fail to understand why people must constantly focus on just one aspect of an event. I’m not complaining because I know that if you are in the eye of the media, it only means that you are important enough to them. However, my bumping into Shah Rukh or spending time with him at an event is just a regular thing. I think people should stop trying to look for controversy in every nook and cranny. All of us are here to work. And we have common functions to attend. Naturally, when we’re under the same roof, we will interact. Why make a fuss? Who wouldn’t want to associate with Shah Rukh or Karan Johar?’’

“After four years in the industry, I know fully well that if your work doesn’t speak for you, everything else is inconsequential,” admitted Katrina. “Believe me, I’m not excited about being in the paper everyday, or on TV, unless there is something in my career worth talking about. Media hype and publicity can’t sustain a star for long. It’s like an air balloon that can be pricked anytime… and will go phut.’’

“Karan thinks out of the box. On the one hand, he makes a Dostana and then a path-breaking film like Wake Up Sid. Naturally, I’d like to do a film for his banner. Likewise, working with Adi (Yash Raj Films) is a pleasure. He has a young unit and they work with clockwork precision. Doing a film for them is being on a school camp, but completely result oriented,” says Katrina when asked about her future films.

“Honestly, I have no illusions about where I’m positioned,’’ said the pragmatic girl. “I’m nobody’s fool and for the moment, all I want is to do is some good work.’’

ASIN: FROM GHAJINI TO LONDON DREAMS!

1. How did London Dreams happen?
I was still shooting for Ghajini but Vipul had seen some of my South Indian films. So I got a call from him and he said he had a role of a headstrong talented girl in his next directorial venture after Namastey London. Obviously I was excited at the sound of it! (laughs) I love Vipul’s cinema, he showcases emotions really well and his films always have strong music. So it was actually a no-brainer that I wanted to be a part of this project immediately on hearing its script. In a way, this is my first authentic Bollywood film even though Ghajini released first. That’s because I had already played Kalpana in the south version of Ghajini before doing the Hindi remake with Aamir (Khan).

2. Tell us the experience of working with Vipul Shah!
Fabulous! Vipul is very organized, he does his homework really well so when you reach the sets the shot break downs are done, he knows exactly how he wants the scene done. And I am a complete Director’s actor. It’s important for me to understand my director’s vision and in that sense Vipul is very giving. I’ve been spoilt by him because now I think I will always want all shoots to be as planned! (Smiles)

3. Tell us something about your character in London Dreams?
I play a south Indian girl, Priya, who is emotional but strong willed and ambitious at the same time. And she has two radically different sides to her. At home she’s a traditional girl clad in Indian outfits but the minute she’s out with friends, she’s a fire brand, and that shows in the way she dresses. And she’s also partly responsible for the conflict between Salman and Ajay’s characters. So it was a wholesome character to play.

4. This is the first time you’re working with big names like Salman Khan & Ajay Devgn. What was that like?
When I came on to the sets of London Dreams I didn’t know them. I knew they were way senior and was anxious just like any newcomer would understandably be. And then I’d heard so much about them from different people. Salman has a ‘bad boy’ image. Many told me that he was very temperamental and erratic! Having worked with him I dispelled all those myths. I got to see a sensitive actor who had an absolute ball on the sets and went out of his way to make everyone comfortable. Both Ajay & Salman are also great offscreen friends and that shows on celluloid. Ajay, contrary to popular belief, was not reticent at all. He was very helpful and friendly! I realised that you find out the truth about people only when you work with them and get to know them better.

5. Tell us about the music of London Dreams!
Oh! There’s so much that I can say! (smiles) London Dreams has a backdrop of a rock band so it’s only right that the music should be an arterial part of the film. And I think that Shankar, Ehsaan & Loy have done complete justice to the film in that sense. The music is melodious but remains true to the essence of the film. It’s a very holistic album – there’s the masti of Punjab and the edge of contemporary music. I personally love Man Ko Ati Bhaave and Tapke Masti; they’re fun songs!

6. Everyone is waiting for London Dreams with bated breath. Tell us why we should watch it?
It’s an absolutely stunning looking commercial entertainer with emotions, humour, music and drama! It’s a big one for the families! We had a blast shooting it in the UK and I took back some really fond memories with me. The fantastic time we had on the sets and the chemistry between all of us will show on screen!
(London Dreams releases in the UK and UAE on Thursday 29th October and in the US on Friday 30th October. Visit www.studio18india.com for cinema lists)

RANBIR KAPOOR’S earliest memories of his grandfather Raj Kapoor make him smile as he gets ready for his first shot for the day in Bhopal where he’s shooting for Prakash Jha’s Rajneeti.

RANBIR KAPOOR’S earliest memories of his grandfather Raj Kapoor make him smile as he gets ready for his first shot for the day in Bhopal where he’s shooting for Prakash Jha’s Rajneeti.

“I was his favourite grandchild. Whenever my mom shouted at me I would call him up and he would fire her. I, being his first grandson, was special. Every weekend, the grandkids used to go to his home in Chembur. He kept a bag of toffees and gave us one every time we salomed him. I once asked him for a suit when he was visiting Russia. He got back two bags of suits in every colour possible. He never shopped for anyone else.” Wonder if the suits had anything to do with it, but Ranbir became an ardent fan of Raj Kapoor’s cinema in school. “It was during my last days of school. That’s when I realised I wanted to be part of the film industry. The first RK film I saw was Sri 420. It influenced me deeply.”

Ranbir’s father Rishi Kapoor wanted his son to get a formal education before he became an actor. “I completed my Standard 12 in Mumbai. Then I went to film school in America although everyone suggested I go to business school. But I don’t think I ever could do anything apart from movies. My father supported that and agreed to send me to acting school.”

Ranbir loved the experience of living alone in the US. “I learnt to value my family and my money. I missed my parents. I met them three times a year in Mumbai. In New York, my friends and I would take a train to Queens to see new Hindi films. Being in touch with Hindi films and music during my stay in the US made me determined to turn a director at the earliest.”

‘I’M REALISTIC ABOUT LOVE’

Ranbir didn’t have a girlfriend in the US. “But I had my first girlfriend before that in school in Mumbai when I was in Class 7. I was really naïve then. I didn’t understand love. When that relationship ended I went into depression. I thought I would never fall in love again. Now I think I’ve become more realistic about love. Love is a beautiful feeling. It almost equals cinema in my list of passions.”

Ranbir’s parents have been married for over 30 years. “I firmly believe in marriage. Marriages today go wrong for temporary pleasure and lust. My marriage will be for keeps.”

The Wake Up Sid actor has seen his parents’ marriage go through turbulent times. “That’s what makes any relationship stronger. My sister and I were never kept in the dark about my parents’ fights. If after marriage, God forbid, my wife and I fight, I’d make sure our children don’t feel insecure.”

Ranbir feels Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh make the best ever pair on and off screen. “Just as Raj Kapoor made the best onscreen pair with Nargisji. Me? I think I make the best pair with Konkona Sen-Sharma.”

He admits, “Yup, I think I have a wonderful life. But I want more. Much more. I don’t want my life to get perfect. Because then there’d be nothing more to strive for.”

The way he’s handling his career would have made his grandfather Raj Kapoor proud. If Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya brought Ranbir instant notice, his new film Wake Up Sid has given the young actor a cult status.

Ranbir isn’t taking the rave r e – views s e r i – ousl y. He pushes on doing his work, sometimes to the exclusion of a personal life. Girlfriend Deepika Padukone recently had to fly in to Bhopal to spend time with the country’s latest heartthrob. But when he’s shooting, Ranbir detests distractions. He’s so focussed on his work the people close to him feel left out.

For Shimit Amin’s Rocket Singh Salesman Of The Year, which releases next, Ranbir learnt to speak fluent Punjabi. “Rocket Singh made me a better h u m a n b e i n g. Not too many roles do that. Though my mother is Sikh, I didn’t speak fluent Punjabi. But I started speaking Punjabi for the role of the Sikh. I wore a kadaa throughout the making of the film. I had a beard and turban. I read the Guru Granth. This film made me know and respect the Sikh culture and religion.”

‘ACTORS ARE OVERRATED’

Ranbir is all set to buy himself a home, “It’s just property acquisition. I’ll never live in it, not even when I get married. I can’t stay away from my parents.”

He also has a wishlist of 40 directors he wants to work with. It’s not just in his head. The names are diligently written down and being ticked off one by one. “For me, cinema and not just acting is a passion. I love filmmakers. Actors are generally just tools, and overrated.”

Ranbir reveals his plans as a director. “It sounds too pompous to say I’m already directing a film. But I’ve been inspired by the work of Raj Kapoor, Guru Dutt, Mehboob Khan, Bimal Roy. My father made me watch their works. I’m not influenced by actors. I’m influenced by these directors. They made me passionate about cinema. I’ve a number of ideas for what I want to make. But I’m not a good writer. I would definitely like to cast myself because I know my film would be about a boy my age. And I’d like to believe no one else would fit the bill better.”

He lights up when he speaks about his father Rishi Kapoor. “I loved my father in Love Aaj Kal. He’s a source of inspiration. His passion for any film, good or bad, is exemplary.”

He has signed only one new film. “I want to take a month off. On the other hand, these are the best years of my life and I might as well make the best of them. Truth is, I feel guilty when I’m not working. I would rather be on a film set than anywhere else.”

Pausing to think, Ranbir says, “I think God has already made plans for me. How things turn out are not in my hands. All I can do is follow my conviction.”

In an interview to Star Week, Rani Mukherjee breaks her silence on many taboo subjects. For the first time, the actress talks about her relationship with Adi, the speculation about her marriage and being Yash Raj Film’s fav actress.

About Adi she says: I have a very special relationship with Adi. He’s a person who I absolutely admire and respect. He always had faith in me since from the beginning.

He was the one who spotted me in Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat and recommended me to Karan for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. He and Shah Rukh were instrumental in changing Karan’s mind about me. Karan didn’t think I was hip enough for the role. It’s very easy for people to make assumptions, But it doesn’t bother me because I am enjoying my work. I’m in a very happy state of mind right now. My film has done well; my family is here; my friends have appreciated my work.

On being a Yash Raj films’ fav actress: Coincidentally, all the roles I’ve done in the recent past have come from the same banner. I would’ve done those films had anyone else offered them to me too. Of course, I have a comfort factor with Yash Raj. I’ve done 12 films with them. That comfort factor lies with Dharma Productions (Karan Johar) and Red Chillies (SRK) as well.

You often see many actors working with only certain directors. Actors like Hrithik, Shah Rukh, and Akshay have done a lot of films with people they are close to. But they’re never questioned over their decisions. A woman is always scrutinized for her it. But it’s okay. I’m not minding the movies I am doing with Yash Raj. It doesn’t bother me what people say.

On Marriage: When I have to get married, I would be telling people about it. It’s ridiculous to think that I’m the kind of person who’d want to hide her marriage. I have not come from a family like that. Just because I am an actress, I don’t have to hide my marriage.

Shiney Ahuja’s wife Anupam is ecstatic on the actor being granted bail after serving prison term for three months for allegedly raping his maid

Shiney Ahuja’s wife Anupam is ecstatic on the actor being granted bail after serving prison term for three months for allegedly raping his maid.

• Did you anticipate that Shiney would get bail yesterday?
Honestly, I always went with a positive and open mind. Every time I used to feel ki ho jayega.

• What was special about yesterday that made it happen?
I would attribute it to our daughter, Arshiya. We hadn’t seen her since a long time as she was in Delhi. It was only six days ago, on September 27 that she came to Mumbai. It was her second birthday on September 28. She brought luck and her father was freed.

• How did you react when you heard that Shiney has been granted bail?
I was overwhelmed, I started crying. I can’t tell you how happy and relieved I am feeling right now.

• How are you planning to meet Shiney — with a hug or a kiss?
(Laughs) We will definitely hug. I imagine it will be a family picture with my daughter, parents and parents-in-law also being there.

• Has the ordeal brought you and Shiney closer?
Yes, but that would have happened to any couple. There were funny stories about us and Shiney bore the brunt of it.

• Are you not planning to return to the US (where she works). Will you continue staying in India with Shiney?
US can wait. That’s not a priority. I will be with Shiney — be it in Delhi or Mumbai.

• Did you pray fervently for your husband’s freedom?
Of course, I used to go to Siddhivinayak every Tuesday and did many other things. My prayers have been answered. I want to thank the people from the film industry and everybody who stood by me. Ashoke Pandit, in particular, was like a rock by my side. I would also like to thank my lawyers — Shrikant Shivde, Neha Bhide, Manoj Mohite and Shirish Gupte.

• How is Shiney’s health now?
He had a severe back problem on September 25. That was the last time I met him. He will be out of jail on Saturday. I am just dying to meet him.

• Do you feel dejected that Shiney has been directed to stay out of Mumbai?
Not at all. I respect the law and have faith in the judiciary system. We will be fine in Delhi where our parents reside.

• Will Shiney return to films?
Of course. Why would he go anywhere else? He will abide by the law and work wherever the law permits him to go.

• Have you ever been, either deliberately or by circumstances, isolated?
It depends on how you treat isolation. When I was sent to boarding school I felt isolated because we were in Sherwood School in Nainital and we had to do nine months at a stretch from March to November. There were no breaks, we never came home and we only saw our parents after nine months. When you get your first job, you have to go to a new city, you are in a completely different environment, and you feel isolation. But at the same time you have the independence of earning your own money, taking your own decisions.
When I was in the film industry, I took a sabbatical some years ago for about five years. I lived in other parts of the world. That was isolation, but in a different sense. There was the joy of getting my own groceries, making my own breakfast, parking my own car, doing things that were ordinary.
There are times, I must admit, when I need to be left alone. We are all artistes and deal in a profession that is very sensitive in many ways. We are constantly trying to portray characters which are, perhaps, completely alien to us in nature, in constitution, in words, in action. And, after continuously being in this loop of repetitive impersonations of different people all the time, maybe we forget who we actually are. Therefore, we need to be by ourselves, just to do ordinary things, spend time with our grandchildren and just walk in nature and do nothing.

• So isolation is not really bad?
No, it’s not. Recently, I was with a friend, who was ill, for about two-and-a-half months without any pressure of work. I had deliberately not taken on any work and it was a very refreshing time for me even though I was there for something which was more medical centric and we were always tense. But it was great to not have to get up at a stipulated time and not worry about whether I need to have a shower now and get ready, or I need to be at the dining table at so and so time otherwise the lunch break will be over, to just be able to not do anything that is routine or has been stipulated as routine. I never watched TV, never read papers. Just sat there, looked out of the window or just sat by myself. At times, though, I began to wonder “What am I doing? I need to occupy my self” because I am used to working for such a long period of time and suddenly I had nothing to do. That was very disturbing.

• How does being in the public glare 24X7 change you as a person?
With the benefit of being a celebrity, there is also the burden of being a celebrity. You have to be on your best behaviour all the time. You must not be seen doing things that are objectionable to society, to the constitution, to the law. But I think if you reconcile with that and conduct yourself in a manner where you follow the rules, then you are fine. As individuals and as a nation, I think, I have always wanted to express that there should be a national policy, which is what our attitude should be. I want that there should be a very definite identity, what an Indian is when he goes out of his shores. I see a German and there is something definitive about his nature. I want a distinctive positive quality but it should be universal. I go abroad and sometimes when I meet my countrymen they say, “I am from Kerala or I am from Bengal”, I would like him to say, “I am from India”.

• How do you account for the fact that today people are willing to come on national television and talk about their lives, something that didn’t happen before all these reality shows?
I think it is to do with the way we are developing, the fact that we are unable to keep other influences, other cultures away from us because of the communication facilities available to us. We see other channels from other parts of the world, we see them behaving differently and there is an intent or desire or perhaps just a commercial desire to emulate that. I think that we are growing as a nation and we are still at a developing stage. Until we reach a certain stature, we will have to go through this process. And then eventually, one day, society itself will decide and say “No you can’t do this.” Just like one would say that we are Indians and this is not our culture. How did we get that? There is a huge history behind us. These are phases; we will sift the good from the bad, and then eventually live with the good.

• You are always very politically correct, where does this come from?
I don’t know what you mean by politically correct. Sometimes people ask me how you like a particular person. I will obviously like him and say good things about him because perhaps I haven’t seen the other side of his personality. I would have to feel ugly inside to sniff out the ugliness in anybody else. I would rather say he is normal; every body has good and bad qualities, why talk about the bad ones. What good is it to you? Is he going to change? Are you going to change his psychology? Are you going to change yourself with respect to him? He is still going to be that way. So why go through this whole trouble of disturbing my internal system in trying to decipher that his internal system is wrong. I think it’s a waste of energy.

On the occasion of Lata Mangeshkar’s 80th Birthday, the one of the largest music company Saregama launched an album which compiled a new collection of 8 CDs of her most resonant songs in order to pay tribute to this living legend. Each CD has select chartbuster songs through her career (40’s – 2000’s). We had a special chat with the living legend and discussed about her journey through all these years. It also contains Lataji’s rare photographs through the decades. The collection Apart from the photographs also contains a write-up personally written by Yash Chopra for Didi along with their photograph together. On this prestigious occasion she interacted with media and shared her views, her experience and what she feels about her contribution to music arena, the country. Foremost to anything, lets wish her many many happy returns of the day and this coming year, brings more wishes and happiness for beloved Latadi.

How does it feel turning 80?

-Anybody will feel good but now that I’m turning 80, I feel extremely great. It’s always a charm to age gracefully.

How did you celebrate your birthday?

-I don’t celebrate my birthday. I don’t like cutting cakes. During my childhood, my mother use to prepare sweets at home and use to apply tilak. I still love this simple way of celebration.

Has Saregama compilled this album to bring together best of your melodies together. So on what basis have you selected the songs?

-We selected those songs, which always topped the list of Ameen Sayani’s famous radio programme ‘Geetmala ki chhaon mein’.

This album also consists of few words of praise and regards from veteran Yash Chopra. What you have to say about it?

-We share integral relationship of brother and sister. I have worked with him several times and he has been my one of the favorite directors. Coincidently, his birthday is on 27th and mine is on the very next day on 28th.

Do you think any milestone is left to be achieved or have you missed out on anything that you regret?

Whatever I achieved is by God’s grace. I’m completely satisfied and content with my life and career. I want to continue singing for the rest of my life.

When you started your singing career, people use to say that you have very sleek and thin voice.

-Yes, I do have thin voice. But my first song was for an actress whose voice was very upright and strong.

Nur Jahan had lots of influence on your singing style in your starting days. Elaborate.

-Yes, because I use to love her and admire her immensely. I use to try and sing few words like she did. But, latter I discovered my own style of singing and the credit goes to music composers of that time.

You’ve become very selective about the type of songs you choose in the industry now? What kind of songs do you prefer?

I’m open to all kinds of songs but the only thing I look for is the lyrics. The lyrics have to be meaningful. I would like the producers and the directors to approach with soulful and meaningful tracks.

There has been only one “Lata” from past so many decades. Do you think reality shows can accomplish another singing talent like you?

Reality shows these days are all about singing, dancing, performing and latest fashion. New singing stars have potential but they concentrate more on overall performance rather than singing itself which is a total contradiction. Singing is a divine form of art and blending it with other art forms takes away the very soul of music. So it’s better if reality shows concentrate purely on the talent of singing and music.

To believe you have even acted?

-Yes, I did. But, trust me I don’t like to be in front of camera and do make-up.

You had a stint in Rajya Sabha – how was the experience in juggling between politics and music?

You all are aware about my experience in Rajya Sabha. But I feel that anyone can get into politics whether he is an artist or an ordinary man. He should have the feeling of patriotism and a devotion to work for the common man.

Finally, tell us what kind of songs do you like to sing as well as listen to?

Well whenever a film used to come up with haunted, spooky songs, the composer always used to approach me. But I like soft romantic songs.

Tell us something about A.R.Rehman.

-He is very talented music composer. He always grants opportunity to young talents to excel which is very appreciable. Even I have worked with him and he is indeed one of the god-gifted talent.

Bebo-cum Dolly-cum-Lara Dutta

Miss Universe Lara Dutta stepped into various genres of movies but off late her trademark movies are mainstream comedy. She started out her career with films like Andaaz, Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost, Bhaagam Bhaag, No Entry, Partner, Billu Barber etc. The dazzling Lara Dutta is back again in yet another comedy flick “Do Knot Disturb” directed by Vashu Bhagnani starring Govinda. We interviewed Lara to know more about her new film “Do Knot Disturb” –

Tell us more about your film “Do Knot Disturb”. What kind of character do you play?

I’m playing Dolly in the movie who is in love with a married man and to hide the post marital love affair, a lot of situations arises which turn out to be a complete drama with humor. The film has been directed by David Dhawan and Producer is Vashu Bhagnani. Along with Govinda, the other co- stars in the movie are Sushmita Sen and Ritesh Deshmukh.

So are you the same Govinda’s Dolly who has become so popular with the audience?

Yes, I’m his Dolly and she has become famous just because the way Chi-Chi calls her.

How was your experience working with another Miss Universe Sushmita Sen in the movie?

It was good but we hardly had a few scenes together but all together it was a dream come true by working with her.

With two former Miss Universe working together in the same movie, we heard that there were a few clashes between you two?

Is it necessary that if two actresses are working together, they are bound to have a cat fight? The shoot was a really good experience and nothing like that happened.

How was it working with Govinda again in “Do Knot Disturb?

It was indeed a fantastic experience working with him again after doing movies like Bhaagam Bhaag and Partner. But this I got more opportunity to perform with him. But this doesn’t end here, I’ve worked with Govinda again in Ravi Chopra’s “Banda ye Bindaas hai” which will be released soon.

Did you face any kind of problem while shooting for “Do Knot Disturb?”

When you have Govinda and David Dhawan together, the comedy automatically comes out. So I tried hard to come up to their level.

So what is the reason behind you taking up comedy flicks?

Well, it’s mostly because I’m getting more of these types of movies. Also working in a comedy movie is a lot of fun and I really enjoy my work. I believe that it’s more difficult to work for a comedy film than playing a serious character. I really relish working with directors like David Dhawan, Priyadarshan and Sajid Khan.

How was it working the Sanjay Dutt for the first time in the film “Blue?”

The movie “Blue” is a completely different one where I’ve had a few action scenes too. Sanjay Dutt is a great actor and I liked working with him as well.

We’ve shot the movie underwater, I think the audience will like the film.

Delhi happens to be the hub of masses and classes and ranks first in the promotional tour of films as it has the capability to attract media massively. And hence the team of “Do Knot Disturb” arrives at the capital city as part of promotional activity. Govinda, Lara Dutta, Ritesh Deshmukh, Director David Dhawan and Producer Vashu Bhagnani held a press-meet with print as well as electronic media in Delhi. During the afternoon time in Le Meridien the entire cast and crew gathered and interacted with media and disclosed aspects of the film.

Director David Dhawan went ahead to say, “I made this film to make people laugh and rejoice. All have done great job be it Govinda, Ritesh or female leads Sushmita Sen and Lara Dutta.” When asked to Actor Ritesh that he was convinced to do the film only for namesake of David and Vashu Bhagnani, He replied, “I have worked with Vashu Bhagnani in past but that was not the reason for me to day yes for the film. David Dhawan gave me the script to read and go through. I loved my character; it gives dimension to my comedy skills.” Hearing to this Govinda turned towards David and asked him, “David you made Ritesh to read the script and you never gave me any script. Why so? David replied, “Govinda do you need the script. I don’t think so.” Everyone busted out in laughter.

Lara smiled and said that, “My height is 5 feet 8 inches and my weight is 58. Therefore, he named me 58.” Then she was asked thatis her name Dolly in the film which is repeatedly heard from Govinda in the film? She said, “Yes, I am only Govinda’s Dolly in the film.”

Whenever one talks about Govinda the first thing that flashes in the mind is laughter riot and fully-loaded entertainment.

“Indeed ‘Do knot disturb’ will be a super success” —- Govinda

Whenever one talks about Govinda the first thing that flashes in the mind is laughter riot and fully-loaded entertainment. All his film offers laugh of your life and certainly paisa vasool. And when the package of Govinda and David come together then undoubtedly it is a reloaded fun affair. You pick any from the slot be it ‘Shola aur Shabnam’, ‘Haseena man jayegi’, ‘Deewana Mastana’, ‘Aankhen’, ‘Raja babu’, ‘Sajan challe sasural’, ‘Kunwara’, or ‘Coolie No.1’, ‘Hero No.1’, ‘Chote miyaan bade miyaan’ and ‘Partner’ all have been hilarious in their own way. In this second inning, he is currently occupied with the promotional commitments of his much talked about Vashu Bhagnani’s “Do knot disturb” starring Govinda, Ritesh Deshmukh, Lara Dutta and Sushmita Sen. This film is directed by David Dhawan. With interface with media, he discussed several things about DKD, his up-coming films, his rapport with rest of the stars and of course with David Dhawan. Following is the dis-course:

What is the story of “Do knot disturb”?

-The film is about this filthy-rich businessman who is married to a beautiful and sophisticated female but he falls in love with a supermodel and the seeks help from a friend and then lots of twist and turns takes place. It is an out and out comedy film directed by David Dhawana nd produced by Vashu Bhagnani.

It’s been long for you to work with Vashu Bhagnani. How was it?

-Yeah, it been quiet a long now. It’s been nearly 10 years when we came up with ‘bade miyaan chote miyaan’ and it really did well at box-office. Prior to it I did films like ‘Coolie No.1’ and ‘Hero No.1’ and both were big hits. And indeed ‘Do Knot Disturb’ will be a super success.

Sushmita Sen is one of the lead female actor in the film. Rumors are going round that all’s not well between you’ll both and that was clearly visible during the shoot. How far is it true?

-You rightly quoted that these are rumors. There is no true in it. We have worked together in many films and audience has appreciated our pair.

The other female lead actor is Lara Dutta. Elaborate

-She plays the character of ma love interest. She has done a fabulous work and I have worked with her in “Partner” too. She is a great person to work with.

You are known for comedy genre. What different does this movie from your past flicks?

-It is complete different film. Punches and presentation plays a very important role in comedy genre because they hold the capacity to add a new flavor to the subject. Perhaps, this film is different and I ensure not even for one minute people can control their laughter in the film.

Ritesh has titled you as “King of comedy”. How was working with him?

-I know him since he was a kid. I have seen his work in films like ‘Her babyy’ and ‘Masti’. He has a great and authentic comedy timing and masters in it. I thoroughly enjoyed working with him.

Your lined up film also includes Maniratnam’s “Ravan”. Tell us something about it

-I play ‘Lakshman’ in the film. I always wanted to work with Mani Sir and with this film my dream has come true.

To believe the sequel of ‘Partner’ was announced when is it coming?

-David and Salman are pre-occupied with many projects and therefore, delay is happening.

Even your daughter Narmada is planning to enter Glam-world. When is it happening?

-She is too young now and yes, she is planning, waiting for appropriate and pat subject for her.

-Aahana Mishra

Having delivered a slew of sleeper hits that broke Bollywood stereotypes and gave the Indian film industry a new direction, ABHAY DEOL, who hails from an illustrious film family, is being touted as India’s young, successful new-age hero.

Having delivered a slew of sleeper hits that broke Bollywood stereotypes and gave the Indian film industry a new direction, ABHAY DEOL, who hails from an illustrious film family, is being touted as India’s young, successful new-age hero.

His much-discussed Hindi language feature, ‘Road, Movie’, termed as the Indian Cinema Paradiso, has been officially invited for a world premiere as a special presentation at The Toronto International Film Festival, 2009.

In a rare interview, the young Deol opens up about the film that’s been kept guarded all this time:

What was your reaction when you first heard the narration of ‘Road, Movie’ from Dev Benegal?

I didn’t have a narration, I actually read the script and it was really nice, dreamy and humorous. It’s Rajasthan (a North-Indian state), so I kinda had a nice feel about it. I knew Dev (Benegal) and was sure that he would get a good team together. Then there was Studio 18 behind it, which was a big plus point as well. It’s important for a good script and director to have the right backing. All I had to do is to sign on the dotted line, which I did!

‘Road, Movie’ has been produced for Indian Films and Studio 18 by well-known US-based producers, Ross Katz and Susan B. Landau. Did you know about them?

I got to know Susan on the shoot; she was the person behind the wheel driving us. It was cute to watch her work in an Indian milieu. On the way she began to pick up a bit of Indian-ness, which was great. I meat Ross briefly in New York at the screening of ‘Slumdog Millionaire.’

Tell us the experience of working with Tannishtha Chatterjee and Satish Kaushik (the acclaimed stars from ‘Brick Lane’) in ‘Road, Movie’?

Satish Kaushik and Tannishta are seasoned actors with a great body of work. I got to know them during the making of the film and it was a pleasure. Dev is a great director to work with as well. He’s very clear in his thought process and very receptive to ideas and opinions. When he has something nice to say that means he’s really angry and when he has something nasty to say he’s really happy. He was nasty for the most part so that was a good thing! (Laughs)

Tell us a bit about your character in ‘Road, Movie’?

It’s very different from the ones I’ve played previously. He’s very simple, urban and non-verbal. It was a journey through life for him – comic, dramatic, coming of age, growing up and discovering freedom. He doesn’t have an idea of what he wants to do, all he know that he doesn’t want to be in this town because he doesn’t see a future for himself. He fears he’ll end up like his father.

The truck is an integral character in ‘Road, Movie’. Tell us a bit about your romance with it?

(Smiles) It was hectic but fun. I had to drive a truck- a 1943 Chevy in which a brand new engine had to be put! It wouldn’t go further that 40-50 miles an hour and in a sequence where I had to drive it really fast everyone was afraid that the truck would collapse!

The wind shield was too low, so I had to slouch and drive. The rear view mirrors looked up on the back of the truck so I couldn’t see the traffic behind me but over time I got used to it. (Smiles)

What’s been your biggest take-away from the ‘Road, Movie’ experience?

It was my eighth film, I was mature by then… it was a great experience overall. I made some great friends and slogged in the desert heat. I hope it does well because it’s not a run-of-the-mill Bollywood film. It is a dry feel-good comedy, poetic and subtle in its humour, beautifully shot and surreal.

      7. What would you say is the USP of ‘Road, Movie’?

Its execution. It’s a beautifully shot universal story with minimal dialogues. The movie is told through silences through the road journey.

What were your thoughts on finding out about its official selection and world premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival, 2009?

I was excited and delighted because this is the kind of film that merits a huge international platform. Its script was an official selection at L’Atelier du Cannes in 2006. It is being represented internationally by Fortissimo Films. ‘Road, Movie’ is their first Indian take-up. The film is Indian at heart but international in attitude and personality. It caters to the South-Asian and mainstream audiences alike.

(Road, Movie premieres at The Winter Garden Theatre Toronto on 18th September and at The Scotia Bank Theatre 1 Toronto on 19th September. Visit www.roadmoviethefilm.com for further information on the film)

“Me and Bobby make a good pair” –Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranuat is vibrant, performance-oriented, beautiful, charismatic and is all set to feature in film “Vaada Raha” assuring unique and different character from her past movies. Before commencing her career in film she started as theatre actor with Ashmita theatre group and acted in several plays. After coming to Mumbai, she was spotted by Director Anurag Basu in a café and miracle named “Gangster” happened to her. And then there was no looking back for Kangana. “Woh Lahme”, “Life in a metro”, “Fashion”, “Razz”, she earned appreciation for her full-fledged performances. She has even grabbed Filmfare award for best supporting role in film “Fashion”, Filmfare was best female debut for “Gangster” and many more. While her recent interaction with media, she has much more to say for her up-coming film “Vaada Raha”. Following is the interface noted:

Tell us about “Vaada Raha”.

-“Vaada Raha” is presented by Next Gen and Top Angle Productions. It is produced and directed by Samir Karnik. I play love-interest of Bobby Deol. Apart from us, Dwij Yadav and Atul Kulkarni star in the film. The music is composed by Toshi-Sharib, Babbu Maan, Monty, Rahul Seth, Sandy and Sanjoy Chowdhury.

Can you brief us about the story?

-Me and Bobby Deol are in love. He plays a doctor who is researching on cancer. He is very positive and fun-loving person. But, an incident occurs in his like which changes the flow. It is very emotional film. And audience will love it.

This is the first time you are working with Director Samir Karnik and actor Bobby Deol. How was it working with them?

-As I said, Samir Karnik has made a beautiful movie and it was immensely great working with him. Bobby is a very humble co-actor. We make a nice-pair.

You are known to inact the character of a drug-addict, psyche, with negative shades. And it is indeed not everyone’s cup of tea. You must be mostly approached with such roles. Elaborate.

-Yes, I know I am good in it. And that is absolutely true that I ve been getting such offers. Sometimes I feel I’ll be getting such offers only.

Tell us something about film “Kites”.

-I am salsa-dancer in the film. I learnt many dance-steps from Hritik Roshan on the sets of “Kites”. One will see different Kanagana in coming times.

Which are your up-coming films?

-“Once upon a time”, “No Problem”, “Ek Niranjan”

Your journey started with “Gangster” and today you are counted amongst performance-pact actors. How does it feel?

-My journey has been great, touch-wood. I worked with Anurag Basu in my first film, and then did 2 consecutive films with him, under Mahesh Bhatt banner, what more can I ask.

Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji says that rumours about her getting married have started affecting her career.

Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji says that rumours about her getting married have started affecting her career.

“These rumours have been going on for three years and they have started now affecting my career. Lot of filmmakers who approach me for roles start by asking whether I am getting married. They have apprehensions whether I can commit myself to their project,” Rani told reporters.

The numero uno actress termed as “most laughable” the rumour which said that she had left her posh Juhu bungalow because it had brought her ill luck and had moved back to her old flat at Andheri.

“I have made the new house for my family from my hard work, sweat and blood. My house is my temple and how can I run away from it. I am being made to look like an insecure person which I am not,” she said.

The actress said the baseless stories about her are getting stretched too much.

“I cant get married to one man for the last three years or to different men,” she said about her alleged link ups including the rumour about her marriage to filmmaker Aditya Chopra.

“I am the only daughter of my parents. When I get married, it will be announced publicly and will take place with pomp,” Rani said referring to the story that she has secretly married to Chopra.

The actress said instead of wasting time of clarifying bizarre rumours, she would rather concentrate on her films, work hard and make her fans happy.

Rani admitted that she was the odd person out where PR forms a major part of her profession.

“It is shortcoming that I have as I don`t like to talk about my daily life. The media has taken advantage of my silence and communicated to my fans very wrongly,” she said.

Rani said three years ago when the rumours about her marriage started, her father had to come on television to clarify.

“No father should be put through such misery. Despite clarifications, the rumours have continued. You have to believe what I am saying. But, if you still continue spreading stories about me, I cant stop you,” Rani said.

She said she has never felt the need to have a PR or a secretary to interact with the media on a daily basis. “I believe my work will speak for me,” she said.

Rani said `Dil Bole Haddipa` came to her at the right time when she got a feedback that she was crying too much on screen doing serious roles. She said her last release `Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic` unfortunately did not do well.

Rani said applying glue on her face to stick the beard was the most tedious task. “Men in unit when I became a guy forgot that I am Rani when I was in the getup of Veer, the cricket loving Sikh boy,” she recalled.

Rani said she had not taken a break from movies. “I started working on `Haddipa` immediately after my last release.

“I can do two three films at a time if there are great roles. I don`t want to prove anything to my detractors that I work only in Yash Raj films. If Yash Raj offers me challenging roles, I will take up those projects,” she said.

The actress said she has not worn a bikini in `Dil Bole Haddipa`. “Bikini is a very strong word. I have just worn a bikini top with salwar. When you lose weight and tone your body, people are wanting to dress you up in a different way and there is no harm in trying it, “she said.

She said the ultra glam look was for the music video of the film. “In the film, I could not take liberties because the glam look would not go well with the character I play. But in the music videos, I could be portrayed differently,” she said.

When asked about criticism that she had lost her numero uno status, Rani said number games do not affect actors. “The number games are for those who believe in it. The roles that I get make me the actor I am. Getting challenging roles is the best part of being in any stage of your career. I am trying to reinvent myself as an actor and as a looker,” she said.

When asked about her future projects, Rani said she cannot work in any random film. “I am waiting for a great offer. I want to work with Vishal Bharadwaj, Imitiaz Ali, Anurag Basu. But, they have to come up with something which I would like to do,” she added.

No, I’ve never stopped her from doing a film with John or with anybody else, it’s her life, her career, but I’ve just put my foot down on one idiot.

Your dad was ribbing you about dating heroines and expecting them to behave like stay-at-home girls. You let Katrina do what she wants? You really don’t have a hassle with her acting opposite SRK?
No, I’ve never stopped her from doing a film with John or with anybody else, it’s her life, her career, but I’ve just put my foot down on one idiot.

And that is?
Vivek (Oberoi).

Hasn’t he been trying to patch up for eternity?
Arre woh drama-shama karta hai, kaan pakadta hai, you know what all he does… there’s no meaning to it, it’s all… you know what I think of it.

You’ve told people, bhai nahin bolne ka. What’s the affront there?
See, my name is Salman. Sohail calls me bhai, younger people around me call me bhai, that’s okay. But increasingly I’ve noticed that it’s becoming part of my name – I’m not ‘Salmanbhai’, okay?

Ya, sounds like a don…
Arre, not that way, they say it as a sign of respect!

Right…
The kids call me Salman, you realise? Just Salman. And when senior people, colleagues, older people begin calling me Salmanbhai, I get very uncomfortable, I say, this is not happening. Of course it’s not about taking offence. Bhai means they trust me, they believe in me… It’s like they call Sanju baba – Sanju baba is 50, but they all treat him like a little baby. Suniel is called anna, big brother. It’s about that sentiment you evoke in others.

The IPL question: are you or are you not acquiring a team?
Bid karenge. Bid zaroor karenge. Agar bid mein mil gaya, toh team le lenge.

For football, you aren’t charging, it’s close to your heart… But IPL is a business investment. Yeh khayaal kahaan se aaya?
Dekhiye, as far as this goes, I’m going to do it at a different level altogether. One can raise a lot of money through this as well. There are many multinational companies who like to be associated with this, through logos, sponsorships and all that.

Bidding went up to 400 crores for some of the bigger teams last time. Do you have that sort of money in mind?
Itna? Nahin, itna budget toh nahin hai. If it goes to these levels then I can’t afford it! Let’s see.

A girl was saying ‘Main aapko apna pati maan chuki hoon’ today. How do you handle that sort of thing?
It’s scary, man, I don’t know how to handle it, I just don’t.

You get letters written in blood and all that sort of stuff?
Yes, that is why I stopped answering my fan mail. Yeh pehle bahut hota tha. I don’t like that sort of stuff. I can’t handle it.

You should stay single, actually, then girls can keep telling you they consider you their husband!
Yaar agar kaagaz pe sign karna shaadi hai, toh maaf kar do mujhe, ki nahin hui shaadi meri. Waise toh agar divorce bhi sirf sign karne se hota, bahut se logon ke divorce ho chuke hain, bas papers sign nahin huye hain!
Hum abhi paperwork tak aaye nahin hain… when people stay together and break up, it is also like a marriage and divorce, bas functions nahin hote!

Aarti Chhabria won the title of “Miss India” in 1999 and commenced her Bollywood career with film “Tumse Acha Kaun Hain”. The film did not live to everyone’s expectation but, the songs of film became very popular.

Aarti Chhabria won the title of “Miss India” in 1999 and commenced her Bollywood career with film “Tumse Acha Kaun Hain”. The film did not live to everyone’s expectation but, the songs of film became very popular. Soon after that she was seen in Raj Kumar Santoshi’s film “Lajja”, “Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyon”, “Ssukh”, “Awara Pagaal Dewana”, “Raja Bhaiya”, “Teesri Aankh”, “Shoot Out at Lokhandwala”, “Patner” and “Heyy Babyy”. Apart from Bollywood, Aarti even acted in several films in south. She even has around 120 AD commercials under her belt. She holds the experience of music videos too. Soon this year her film “Toss-A flip of destiny” is ready to hit the floor. “Toss-A flip destiny” is presented by Knox Entertainment and is produced by Mukesh. D. Ramani. The film is directed and written by Ramesh Khatkar. Film also stars Rannvijay, Prashant Raj, Madhureema, Mahesh Manjrekar, Rajpal Yadav and many more. Recently, in Axis Bank of Lokhandwala she interacted with media and briefed about the film, her role and upcoming projects. Following is the dialogue exchanged:

Tell us about your film “Toss”

- Toss is a story of a group of childhood friends. And how an incident changes the relationships, beliefs, love, trust between all of them. It’s a fast-paced thriller film.

What role you are playing in the film?

-I play the character of ‘Shasha’. She sings on the cruise of Goa. She extrovert, fun-loving, ambitious, beliefs in herself and wants to achieve whatever she has desired for. Prashant Raj is casted opposite me in the film.

How different “Shasha” is from your other roles played in the past?

-Actually, first time I am playing a character like Shasha. I have never played a role like this. Mostly comedy or romance has been my forte. But, Shasha is different and unique.

Did you undergo any training or workshop for the role of “Shasha”?

-Yes, I learnt the accent and way of speaking, behaving of Goan girls. And we all star-cast attended the workshop before the film-shooting started.

What according to you is the U.S.P of the film and what will make audience to go and watch the film?

-Film has all those elements which the audience wants and loves these days. It has thriller, romance, love everything. According to me the U.S.P of the film is the presentation.

Apart from you there are two more female actors in the film. How was your rapport with them?

-We belonged to same age-group and therefore had loads and loads of fun on the sets of the film. One can witness the rapport when they go and watch the film.

How was the experience to work with Director Ramesh Khatkar?

-It was an immense pleasure to work with him. He is passionate film-maker. His dedication comes across from his work.

Which are your upcoming films?

-“Daddy Cool” and “Toss” are my upcoming films. And both of films are releasing together.

How you are feeling when both of the your films are releasing together?

-I am keeping my finger crossed. Let’s hope for the best. I am nervous about the response of the audience.

What you personally like to play character which is comic-oriented or serious in nature?

-I love playing all kinds of roles. That brings my versatility across. Being an actor I feel comfortable playing all kinds of roles with several shades. Be it ‘Awara Pagaal Dewana’ or ‘Shoot out at Lokhandwala.’
