From turning boredom into a catalyst to re-interpreting the Gita, Pritish Nandy is keeping very busy these days
He’s a man of many talents. Just now, Pritish Nandy is writing a contemporary interpretation of the Bhagwad Geeta, which he hopes to release in around six months. “I paint, write and do various different things in an attempt to express myself. I am trying to find voice, shape and form to my ideas,” says Nandy.
And true enough, he’s giving form to his ideas in other ways as well. An exhibition of his paintings – 33 mix media, poetry on canvas titled ‘Bored’ – opens at Tao Art Gallery today. But why the subject ‘bored’? “When in the thick of people or engrossed in a task, I feel bored. And every time I feel that way, I try to work harder to kill that boredom. It happens with everybody.”
He explains further, “Kishore Kumar was always bored. Bored about the industry, the kind of music he had to sing to. In an attempt to fight boredom he always excelled in whatever he did. That’s the effect of boredom and that’s why it is the subject of my exhibition.”
Was the interplay between words and form difficult? “It wasn’t difficult but it was very interesting. Words lead me, I follow words just like ‘Alice in Wonderland’ followed a rabbit.”
Surprisingly, this art connoisseur is clueless about the economics of painting. “I don’t paint for money or to acquire fame. While working for ‘Afternoon’ newspaper I designed the front page of the paper for three years. Painting is an extension of creativity, a way to express oneself.”
