This year’s International Film Festival of India (IFFI) sure seems hell bent on keeping Bollywood out of the picture. An entire segment of the festival, showcasing ‘mainstream’ (read blockbuster Hindi cinema) Indian cinema, has been scrapped this year.
Last year, the mainstream section of film festival showcased blockbusters such as ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’, ‘Krissh’, and ‘Rang De Basanti’. This year, however the Directorate of Film Festivals, which organises the event, had reservations about the viability of the segment itself.
“They did not want us to call the segment mainstream, saying there was no need to have a distinction between Bollywood cinema and the rest of the country. However, we were conveyed about the decision very late. By then it was too late to gather other films for the segment. We will try and get the segment in place next year, provided the organisers are still interested,” says Suparn Sen, secretary of the Film Federation of India, which curates the segment every year.
Sources in the DFF said the decision to scrap the segment was a part of the decision aimed the make the festival shorn of Bollywood glam and focus on serious cinema.
“This was the decision taken by the organising committee. Also, if the film is to be shown in the festival, it needs English subtitles, and very few Bollywood producers are willing to provide those,” sources say.
