It was supposed to be a close battle between two Bollywood biggies, but it has turned out to be a mauling for 4 multiple Oscar winners.
Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om has already sweeped the floor with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya, with the latter struggling at the UK Box Office with collections of less than £70,000. Om Shanti Om has raked up more than £200,000, and still the weekend is only half gone. Saawariya and Om Shanti Om are being screened on roughly about the same number of screens, Saawariya 46 and Om Shanti Om 52. Saawariya is not expected to enter the UK Top 10.
Now that the battle with Saawariya is done and dusted… a new fight has started. This time between Shah Rukh Khan and 4 multiple Oscar winners… Sean Penn, Tom Cruise, Robert Redford, and Meryl Streep. The latter three star in this week’s big Hollywood release, the politcal thriller Lions For Lambs, while Sean Penn is behind youth flick Into The Wild. Due to the lack of publicity, Into The Wild is not doing as well as the other new releases, but Lions For Lambs is also struggling. Showing on a massive 403 screens, it is unable to keep in check with Om Shanti Om, as the Bollywood flick is outplaying it in every theatre, up and down the country.
Om Shanti Om is now expected to become the highest new entry of the week, and industry insiders expect that it could outdo Lions For Lambs. The last time a Shah Rukh Khan flick entered the charts on the highest position available, was when Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Ghum released a few years back. It entered the UK charts and number 3, but could Om Shanti Om do one better? Let’s wait till Monday evening to see that…
