The reclusive Mehr Jessia on the upcoming beach-wear show, her fascination for Tarun Tahiliani and and the return of the supermodels
At 24 she retired from modelling, and it’s been 15 years since then. Looking back now, it seems a very brave move — Mehr Jessia (now Rampal) was at the peak of her career in 1984. When she walked the ramp, many hearts skipped a beat and brand managers desperately sought her out. “I completely loved walking on the ramp and miss it too much. Having said that, I am extremely proud of my decision. I had to retire for myself,” she confesses.
“I was lucky to be at the right place at the right time,” she adds. “Super models of today are the film stars and sports celebrities. The era of super models will be back in the next three years.” Why? “People will always remember me as the Lakme girl but does anybody remember which cricketer promotes Pepsi and who promotes Coke? The agencies will soon realise that things are all messed up and the era of supermodels will begin again,” explains Mehr.
Her relationship with all the top designers is such that an impressive line up of 20 designers right from Tarun Tahiliani, Manish Arora, Rohit Bal, Manish Malhotra, Raghuvendra Rathore, Haseena Jethmalani and others are designing beach wear for the launch of ‘For Him Magazine’. All Mehr had to do was ask and all of them agreed to design for her. “None of them are beach wear designers but they have done a fantastic job. I think international beach wear designers should learn a lesson in designing from them,” affirms Mehr.
