Rituparno Ghosh is in the city to complete a short film on Mumbai. Tentatively titled ‘Mangal Moorty’, the film is Ghosh’s first attempt at this genre. And the critically acclaimed director suggests he decided to drift a little to make short documentary films, simply to savour the thrill of shooting on the streets of the city.
“The producers approached me to shoot the short film which will be part of a greater canvas about different facets of Mumbai. I am loving the experience,” Ghosh told After Hours.
The other directors who are reportedly filming for the short-film series are Anurag Kashyap, Revathy, Aziz Mirza, Kundan Shah, Saket Chowdhary, Manish Jha and Sudhir Mishra. The docu-series is being produced by Niyati Shah and Samrat Sengupta.
But would he come back to Mumbai for his ‘next’ shooting schedule? While he doesn’t say no, Rituparno hastens to add that it’s because he’s very busy wrapping up his next, ‘Sunglass’, which stars Madhavan, Raima Sen and Konkona Sen Sharma. The film itself is about extra-marital affairs with a trademark Rituparno twist.
“I am busy doing the post production and some corrections. This shouldn’t take much time now. I am almost done and the film should be ready from my side by in the next couple of months or so. After that it’s up to the producers to ensure that it is released quickly,” said Ghosh.
So what next? Is this short film a precursor to a bigger film to be shot in Mumbai? “Well, I have to finish what I have on my hands right now. This done, I can think about other projects. But working in Mumbai is a completely different experience for me and I am definitely loving it. Let the short film be over and I will have time to take this further,” Ghosh signs off.
