There’s nothing wrong with comedies. Films like Lage Raho Munnabhai aren’t really comedies. They are about serious situations, which are transformed into hilarious sequences. It’s all about entertainment at the end of the day.

I wouldn’t say Undertrial didn’t work. Its DVD sales are quite high. The film was appreciated overseas. And if you are talking of box office success then even films like Eklavya didn’t work.
Undertrial entertained the audience in its own way. There are websites where my work has been appreciated so much.
You could have avoided doing Partner…
Every director has his own interpretation. David (Dhawan) wanted to use me in his own way. I even had very few scenes in Paheli. It may be that you didn’t like my character in Partner but have you seen any other film, barring those directed by Ram Gopal Varma or Priyadarshan, where every scene has a purpose? I think it’s your love that increases your expectations.
Let’s talk about Dhol…
The USP of the film is youth and it’s a film for the younger generation. And by the way Main kissi ka baap nahin hoon is film mein. It’s a very fast-paced film with a lot of energy. The message is clear: if you do your work well you will succeed. Everyone wants to create his own identity.
You have worked with David Dhawan and Priyadarshan — two masters of comedy. How do you find the difference?
They have different styles no doubt. But the crux of the matter is that both want to entertain the audience.
