Life’s looking up for Javed Jaffery
Published by  Webmaster  at 01:45:22 pm on September 18, 2007

Once introduced as the dancer-cum-villain, today he’s most synonymous with comedy and character-driven roles. Here’s Javed Jaffery in conversation with Rachana Dubey

What have you been doing lately?
Oh well, I’ve been extremely busy accommodating movies in my schedule. I’m doing two small projects as a hero. I’m also doing films with Sanjiv Sivan, Nagesh Kukunoor and Anees Bazmee. The kind of work I wanted to do has just begun pouring. Life’s looking up.

What have the reports on Dhamaal been?
Dhamaal started out with decent reviews and grew everyday with more and more word of mouth publicity. The latter works only for those films that are genuinely good and loved by everyone across the board. The film’s doing great.

Wasn’t there a sense of insecurity because everyone is known for their comic timings?
Aashish Chaudhary’s comic timing has only been revealed now but the others no doubt have a fantastic sense of humour in person and an even better comic timing on screen. It’s quite obvious to think that there might have been an element of insecurity between us.
Honestly, there was none. We gave away lines and moments to each other. That’s why we hit it off well, both on and off screen.

Why does one have to wait for months and movies to see one performance of yours?
After Salaam Namaste, my only cameo in my movie career, there were zillions who queued up outside my house to sign me on for similar things. They’d say, “Sir, kuch comic track sochenge.” I didn’t want to get repetitive. Classics whether performances or films should not be re-attempted.

I waited for the right film to come my way I continued with my show and other involvements. Then came Dhamaal and Ta Ra Rum Pum. Dhamaal got delayed due to Sanju’s jailing.

Do you think after two Yashraj films, the road ahead will get smoother?
Yes. People noticed me in Salaam Namaste. Not that I had vanished into thin air. But after Salaam Namaste, people who took my presence for granted actually took note of me. They realized I could do put up a good performance.

Then came Ta Ra Rum Pum where I played the one who makes the hero what he is in the film. Fortunately, we didn’t go over the top with it. These two projects brought the spotlight back on me.

What is the report on the film you are planning?
Hello, why is everybody thinking that I’m planning a film? Some scribe may have just published something out of exaggeration. I’m only helping my friends set up the production company and put the film together.. whether it’s with the finances or with technical and creative support.

Why did you have to be a part of Victoria No 203?
Why? Didn’t you like the film? Apart from the fact that I loved the original movie, I liked the role I was offered in this project. Kamal Sadanah is a dear friend. I couldn’t have said no to him. Though the film was written off by the critics, my role was quite appreciated by one and all. So, I’ve no regrets doing the film.

Weren’t you supposed to choreograph a song in Victoria No 203?

Yes and I even co-wrote it. But for some technical reasons, it got dropped the last minute. I plan to choreograph sometime in future for films. There’s nothing on board yet.
