Shah Rukh Khan is popular in UK and USA amongst non-Indians, mostly Pakistani people. And when Shah Rukh decided to feature in a sports flick like Chak De India, he should have known he would anger his many adoring fans… these Pakistani people. For the film does indeed do a little ‘Pakistani-Bashing’. And because of this very reason, the film has proved to be a disaster overseas.
It has achieved very low collections in UK, managing just over £0.1m, and entereing the charts just about… at number 10. Partner opened last month at number 5 and has so far made over $500,00. Chak De India is now expected not to even make half of that amount. The same goes in USA, where the film has opened at number 20, and again is expected to make less than half of what Partner made. Now what is the reason behind this failure… read on.
Firstly, the title itself… Chak De India. I mean do Yash Raj Films really expect non-Indian, especially Pakistani people, to go watch a movie with the word India in the title? And that over the Pakistan Independence Day season? A huge blooper from Aditya Chopra and his father for titling the film Chak De India, I would have just gone with Chak De, and left India totally out of it.
Another patriotic sports flick, Aamir Khan starrer Lagaan, picked up with good word of mouth praise after a dismal opening. But Chak De India is no Lagaan. Far from it. Lagaan was patriotism, but not just Indian patriotism, it was a fight against a mutual Pak-Indo enemy – The British. Chak De India is not…
It amazes me to think that a huge corporation like Yash Raj Films could make this blooper… do they not do market research before a multi-million dollor production? What a gaffe. The greatest gaffe by Yash Raj ever.
But… and this is a big but… There are enough Indians (non Pakistani/Bangladeshi) people overseas to come and see the film to make it a hit. We dont require Pakistani people to come and see a Shah Rukh Khan film to make it a hit… there are plenty of non-Pakistani people out there. So where were they? Why did they not come and watch Bollywood’s number one superemo? What made them stay away? After all this was a Shah Rukh Khan patriotic flick, the first he has ever done. And if people can come and watch Salman Khan and Govinda mess around in a non-serious movie, then why not come and see Shah Rukh Khan in Chak De India?
The reason for that could be that the film’s story doesn’t appeal to the overseas audience. They are much more accustomed to lovey-dovey romantics and family sagas, and the occasional comedy. And the overseas audience has an image of Shah Rukh Khan, which is one of the boy-next-door who falls in love and fights for the girl. And they do not have an image of him as a ‘world-leader’. The movie has no romance, the movie has no SRK running around trees and wooing a a girl, and the movie has no Shah Rukh Khan fighting with family etc. Shah Rukh Khan is popular overseas, but its not the actor that is popular, its the image. An actor like Shah Rukh Khan can not change his image and expect the audience to come rushing to the theatres. This image is what he has built himself, now however long he can, he has to continue making movies in this image… and not change.
At last the industry, and the world is coming to know, that Shah Rukh Khan is not as ‘popular’ and ‘great’ as many thought he was. He is not in the callibre of Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan. These actors are able to perform and bring in the audience in whatever image they portray themselves… I am sad to say but King Khan is not able to do that. And Chak De India has proved that. You may challenge me in regards to this and say that Chak De India performed well in India, the rest doesn’t matter, but in India its 15th August… its Azaadi… and this kind of film just fits into that mood.
I can finally provide proof to what I have been crying out to for years… Shah Rukh Khan is no KING KHAN. He doesn’t even play in the same league as some of the other actors. Shah Rukh Khan’s magic is his image… an image that will fade away with age… My advice to this ‘golden boy’ is that he quickly finds another medium to make money in… (he has already started producing films – that might help)… I say this because the end of Shah Rukh Khan is coming… watch out for it!

Aniruddha makes a good point with what SRK has stuck himself to. Even SRK says that people are in love with characters like Raj and Rahul, not SRK himself. I love SRK (even though he isn’t my favorite actor) and he IS a good actor, so I think that it’s sad that his fans don’t seem to accept him if he doesn’t play a mushy lover boy. Amitabh in his HERO days delivred superhits solely because of him. COOLIE, MARD, SHARABI, KHUDDAR, AKRHI RAASTA etc etc. They became superhits becasue of him like the name of these films suggest. The herione was in these films to decorate the movies.
If you closly look at SRKs superhit films you will realise that the herione has an equal role to him if not bigger than him. DDLJ (kajol) VEERZAARA(preity) DILTHOPAGALHAI (madhuri) KUCHKUCHHOTAHAI (kajol)
A true superstar would not have his herione sharing equal footage as him. His individual stardom can be seen in films like ASOKA, BAADSHAH, DUPLICATE, YES BOSS, etc etc…all this film were flops. CHAK DE will not be a superhit at most it will be average. SRK always needs, good music, BIG HERIONE, big banner to deliver a hit.
Ive always said that this KING KHAN talk is just a myth. The day he delivers a hit like SIVAJI(tamil film) which was a HIT because of the star rajnikanth. SRK can not really be called a true megastar.
Amitabh was the last indian megastar. SRK does not compare. I remember when COOLIE was released in 1983, the hype and hysteria outside the cinemas was because of the Amitabh, nothing else mattered. Thats true megastardom!!
Another point which i forgot to mention. SRK films only run in multiplexes in india, only in BIG CITIES. If you go to small towns with single screens his films are a NO-GO. Majority of the indian population live in small towns in india.

I think one must remember that the era has changed…Amitabh bhachan did not have to contend with Satellite Tv, Piracy, Mulitplexes – choice! TODAY the hysteria cannot be regenerated, Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh experienced something special in that era.

As far as Amitabh is concerned, somebody pointed that only Angry Young Man role only suited him then for their kind information Black, Baghban, Bunty Aur Bably & Sarkar are hit movies wherein Amitabh is not Angry Young Man and he has won numerous awards for these films at the age of 63. The OM SHANTI OM will be the biggest hit of the year…overseas as wll. But the point in review is right SRK is no King anymore. It all depends on package(like Karan Johar/Yashraj) script and direction(like Chak De)………..and this is how it should be – I mean not a glossy package but nice story and direction. …………..so it is good that we should not have good starpower —no that filmakers will work more on script and direction.
By the way again it media who says SRK is King….because media is mostly in cities/read by citizens/created by citizes…..if you take headcount Sanjay Dutt/ Sunny Deol/ Mithun will have equal number of fan following in interiors of India. I like your analysis of the Chak De India film blooper, but your assessment of Shahrukh Khan as a fading actor has dropped the ball on your intelligence. If Shahrukh Khan does fall to the end of his career it wont be because of his “third class acting”, for he has dominated the bollywood industry for years. The reason for his downfall, even though it is not likely, is the changing cultural norms of india itself. In the 90’s people would be interested in movies where a couple fell in love and had a conflict, however, these days that has changed. People look for nude scenes, and looks. The way someone looks is so important in the film industry that it makes me sick! There are many great looking actos/actresses that are in Bollywood simply because they look good, but they cant act worth a damn thing! Stay a model not an actor. Why has Ajay Devgan fall off his career, he may not be the best looking guy but he can act most actors right off the stage. shahrukh has many things gong for him, he looks decently attractive and is a very top class actor and his title as King Khan is well deserved. Please think about how society is leading to the downfall of Bollywood, before you attack the greats of all time! Go watch a movie like SHOLAY, it was a hit of the time, if you watch it now its kind of like these guys are retarded. You name a recent movie that has reached the levels of films like Devdas, DDLJ, Koyla. none exist, quality of acting has diminshed, because bollywood is after models and not actors. Thank You!
It should be noted that Chuk De India was a mish-mash of western sports films (The Miricle on Ice, Mighty Ducks, a League of their Own…), and not as original as it seemed in India (Yash Raj gave a copy of the script to the US Academy of Motion Picure Science for its originality. The Academy must be laughing since this is not as original as thought.) Western audiances don’t want to see what they have already seen without any “masala.” Lagaan, Tare Zameen Par are original,have a message, and Partner is simply bollywood. Chuk de is India pretending to make an “original” movie down to basing it around a “real” person (even if only 1% of the facts represent the real life of the person the movie is supposed to be based on)which anyone who is not from India has seen a dozen times in western movies. If you copy a movie, you have to give it something new, like Yes Boss “masalafying” For Love or Money, you can’t give people an inferior version of something that already exists, which was Chuk De India. India as a whole loses with movies like this.
