Vijayshree Chaudhary, the foremost disciple of Pt. Birju Maharaj, stands tall amongst her contemporaries. She has imbibed the creativeness of a contemporary approach with sacredness of a tradition in her Kathak teaching. No wonder that her class of students comprises from children to housewives to actress like Geeta Basra, Smilie Suri, Gayatri Patel, Rima Sen, Riya Sen, Neetu Chandra, Nimisha, Gauhar Khan and Hazel.
Why would actresses learn hard core classical dance like Kathank? Replies Vijayshree Chaudhary, “Kathak is not only about the body movements and dance steps, it teaches you to control emotions, a perfect body language and grace. All three are important to enhance the actress within.
Then I have imbibed my experience with renowned choreographer Kumundini Lakhiya, Aditi Mangaldas, Anderene Bel and theatre personality Robin Das in my training to make it a complete experience.”
Vijayashree has also trained Miss India Universe Neha Kapoor, Miss India World Natasha Suri, Miss India International Sonal, Miss India Tourisam Tanya Vakil in Kathak for the Talent Round Competition. She has used Kathak dance as a therapy for mentally retarded children and worked with them at different institutions in Delhi.
At present besides her classes at Yari road and YMCA, she is also teaching Kathak in Nalanda dance institute (part of Mumbai university.
