I don’t know if I am qualified to review this movie, because I didn’t grow up on Simpsons. Neither have I sought every episode and tried to catch up on it. I’ve always preferred the much cruder South Park and to a certain extent Family Guy over Simpsons. I know it’s my loss and maybe someday I’ll watch all of Simpson’s episodes and realize my folly. So when I walked into the movie theatre to watch The Simpson’s Movie, I walked in with a clean slate, with no knowledge of inside jokes, importance of certain characters or the different themes that surround the series.
The other problem apart from the fact that I had very little knowledge about Simpsons, was that I had seen way too many episodes of South Park (possibly every episode at least 3 times) and Family Guy. So I walk in with this expectation that the movie (just like the trailer) would have some really clever and twisted jokes. I guess I was wrong and that’s probably not what Simpsons is about. I mean the movie will make you smile, there are some cute jokes and funny moments throughout the movie, but there’s nothing there that made me laugh out loud. It was like watching a mildly funny Pixar movie with half the animation goodness. The creators of the show said that they waited 18 years for a story that would do justice to a Simpsons movie. I guess they should have either waited longer or could have made this 15 years ago.
But like I said my circumstances were different and your experience might reveal something else. I can’t give you a definite answer because I’ve never watched Simpsons so I can’t say for sure if the movie sucked or were my expectations too high, if you know what I mean. The movie has been getting rave reviews from all over, RottenTomatoes.com had it at 89% with users rating it at 91%. The movie opened at $70 Million which is fairly small compared to what Shrek 3 gobbled - $140 Million in the opening weekend, but still pretty good by any comparisons.
Although I didn’t think much of the movie, yet I don’t have a lot of complaints with it either, partly because it wasn’t that long so it was bearable. Moreover If I had my expecations right I probably would have enjoyed it a lot more. however the fact that my friend was snoring in the seat next to me wasn’t helping either. Anyways what sucks is how this summer of big expectations has turned into a one major let down after another. I hope the remaining big movies - Bourne 3 and Rush Hour 3 be at least decent so it’s not a complete loss.
