EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI

Bang Bang!! Vishal Bharadwaj yet again hits the bull’s eye with his latest project Ishqiya. Known for unconventional, sassy and classic tales, this movie is no different from Vishal’s other ventures. A spicy flick with the icing of love and a top-notch story telling from the debutante Abhishek Chaubey. Get prepared for the journey through a movie that is rustic, wild, real and highly addictive.

The movie revolves around two bandits Babban (Arshad Warsi) and Khalujan (Nasseruddin Shah), experts in world of crime, apprehension, passion and treachery. The two are on the trot from their chief Mushtaq.

In the mid of all this and during their escape Babban and Khalujan decide to take shelter in the house of an old friend and here they come across his widow Krishna (Vidya Balan). From here on starts the love story between the three. Khalujan dreaming of the typical love that used to be in olden days and Babban visualising a modern day lustful love with Krishna.

Thus, Krishna (Vidya Balan) plays the love interest of both and enjoy the two’s company. Thus begins a roll coaster journey of drama, action emotion, longing, voracity and revenge and the movie takes various twists and turns.

Everything falls in right place for the movie from the director to the actors. Slowly and steadily the characters of the movie seep into your mind and once the characters get going, the movie then seems to be unstoppable. Every moment of the movie is impetuous and unpredictable. The first half of the movie has light moments and goes in a tick. Post-interval the movie becomes more and more complicated and keeps the viewers at the edge of the seats.

Taking first things first, debutant director Abhishek Chaubey has done a wonderful job. No director in his first film would try hands at stereotypical and unconventional projects, but hats off to Abhishek- he is a true exception. Even the boldest and the most difficult of the scenes have been handled effortlessly and the director shows signs of bright future. The selection of the experienced cast and the perfect Gorakhpur backdrop make the film more real and stylish.

However the only loop hole in the story comes towards the climax which leads to massive confusion and zero outcomes. Yet no complaints and this small mistake can go unnoticed in front of the rest of the writing. The screenplay is written exceptionally well by the trio Vishal Bharadwaj, Sabrina Dhawan and Abhishek Chaubey and they deserve full marks.

But one person who plays the major role as the director and is equally responsible for such a fine film is Vishal Bharadwaj. Vishal Bharadwaj’s dialogues are sharp, realistic and raise the bar of the film. The favourite U.P lingo again does wonder for Vishal as it perfectly suits the taste of the film. And let’s not forget the music by this maestro which makes huge impact on screen and is a treat to watch his compositions like Ibn-e-Batuta and Dil To Bachha Hai. Lyrics by Gulzar are really modern and beyond imagination.

Last but not the least; the words fall short for the actors. Nasseruddin Shah plays a great lover and a perfect bandit. He gets into the skin of the character that makes film look so real on screen. Arshad Warsi yet again strikes the chord with the audience. His timing and dialogue delivery comes from the heart and is natural. Post Paa success Vidya Balan is on cloud nine and this movie would take her to heaven as the way she has acted. The actress is a real gem and is blessed with such perfect qualities of romance, revenge and boldness.

On the whole in Vishal Bharadwaj’s style it’s a ‘Dhan Te Tan’ movie that would make you fall in love instantly. Go fall in love with ISHQIYA now!!!!!!!!!
