Movie Review: Rocket Singh – Salesman Of The Year (2009) starring Ranbir Kapoor

Be warned from the very on-set, if you are hoping to see an extension of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahaani (the last release from Yash Raj Films with Ranbir Kapoor in the lead) then you will surely be disappointed. Rocket Singh – Salesman Of The Year is not your typical Bollywood romance/comedy/musical flick. In fact, it has no comedy, hardly any music and the romance angle is short-lived. This film is not a film but more a docu-drama.
Youngster Harpreet Singh Bedi (Ranbir Kapoor) fails to achieve respectable grades at college. With hardly any avenue of career available to him, he takes the decision to try his hand at sales. During his ‘adventure’ he meets people from all walks of life each inspiring him to eventually become ‘Salesman of the Year’. If you were expecting a more detailed preview then I am sorry but that is that. There is nothing else to write about story-wise, this is the story.
After the superb Chak De India, expectations from director Shimit Amin were huge. But, for a film that has no script, he is unable to put his talents to good effect. We can neither applause nor boo him.
Ranbir Kapoor once more shows that he can act, be it comedy, romance or the straight-faced hard-stricken Rocket Singh that he is here. A performance to be put at the top of his CV, for it proves he does indeed carry his family’s acting genes.
It is difficult to find more to write about Rocket Singh for this review. The film has nothing to talk about apart from Ranbir Kapoor’s acting. And it would probably be right to sum up stating that Rocket Singh – Salesman Of The Year will fail to secure sales at the Box Office.
Watch it only if you love Ranbir Kapoor!
