Movie Review: Jail (2009) starring Neil Nitin Mukesh and Manoj Bajpai

Director/s: Madhur Bhandarkar
Star Cast: Neil Nitin Mukesh, Manoj Bajpai, Mugdha Godse

We have all watched films by Madhur Bhandarkar and seem to enjoy his style of filmmaking. The man takes on controversial subjects and using the platform of the cinema, shows the audience a unique side to everyday life in India. In Jail, Madhur has decided to show everyone life in a prison; a subject previously done in Bollywood. But if Bhandarkar is at the helm then rest assured your eyes will see something very unique.

Let us make it very clear to you from the on-sight; Jail is not a film made for the family audience. Depression is the only thing shown throughout. So do not watch this if you are hoping to throw away the winter blues.

Neil Nitin Mukesh is Parag, a man who has it all; a fantastic job and a sexy girlfriend. But things turn upside down for him and he finds himself in prison. Parag wails to the jailors that he is innocent but his pleas fall on deaf ears. Parag is destined to spend the rest of his life here. So he decides to make a decision for himself, either live his life amongst criminals or vain for freedom. He picks freedom and hence his tale of getting himself free begins.

One thing we would like to mention is not to miss the ending. Never before has something like this been witnessed in a Bollywood film. It will just thump your heart out of your chest.

Bhandarkar’s direction is impressive as one is able to not only see but feel the insides of the prison. One is also able to relate to life within the four walls. Not only that but Bhandarkar has successfully shown how the Indian legal system works, its failings are a huge concern many would relate too.

This has to be Neil Nitin Mukesh’s best ever performance and very difficult to surpass in future; not only his best but quite possibly the best performance by any other actor this year. If Neil does not win any Best Actor awards come 2010 then it will be an ‘injustice’.

Critics will praise Jail but its takings at the box office will be low. The film is made for a select audience and there it will be relished. Jail is THE film of 2009.

RS RATING: 8/10
