J. P. Dutta’s magnum opus is all set for release later this week and already its death-bed is being prepared, as industry insiders predict a Box Office disaster in the beckoning.
With Don already creating waves at the theatres, and same week release Jaan-E-Mann also being admired, there really doesn’t seem to be much space for Umrao Jaan. The film has suffered with bleak promotion and many people are not even aware of its coming release. The theme of the film is another obstacle point to its success, as the modern day audience wants action, thrills, comedy and masala, Umrao Jaan has none of this, and primarily rests on being a 50% love story and the rest a tragedy.
The film was initially to be released on the same day as Don and Jaan-E-Mann, but Dutta decided against that.
Umrao Jaan is a lavish update of a steller novel and is being brought to the big screen by this veteran director. Dutta is most famous for hi war epic flick Border, starring the whose who of Bollywood, which went onto become a massive blockbuster.
The original Umrao Jaan starred Rekha in the lead role and performed as an above average hit at the theatres. The 2006 remake sees Aishwarya Rai in that same role, with the supporting cast consisting of Abhishek Bachchan and Suniel Shetty.
What are your thoughts on Umrao Jaan… will you be going to see the film at the cinema… are you looking forward to it… or will you give it a miss? Does the theme of the film entice you or is it a little too gory for you?

it doesnt really appeal
Are you kidding me, OFcourse i am going to watch it> Aishwarya rai is one of the most under rated artists in BW because she does not do the same old goody toe shoe roles like Rani and Preity. I have not seen JAANEMAN cause i know its the same old jargon being spat out by another director..Atleast Umrao Jaan is an HOnest attempt to adapt a novel with meaning..
of course we are going to watch it in cinema with my whole family, we cant wait, im sure that its going to be a great movie, Ash n Abhi looks great, the songs are great, in todays time you get to see all these fast songs and foreign locations, enough of new york, london and toronto, THIS FILM WILL B A GREAT INDIAN MOVIE LIKE DEVDAS, CANT WAIT.
sorry but will watch don instead
I think Anu Malik’s music is weakest for a JP movie. It does not match Border/Refugee/LOC. Also promotion has been weak. Movie would open average. Needs tremondous word of mouth to succeed.
YES ,I AM GOING TO WATCH THE MOVIE, WHY TO WASTE TIME WATCHING DONA ND jAAN e MAN
watching jaaneman would be a better bet, plus umroa jaan is not a movie which will appeal to the masses, the music is bad, aish is not a good actor neither is abhi so all in all for sure this movie will be the biggest flop of the year
I will go and see it but only because it is an adaptation of a very good piece of literature and also cause ash looks amazing. And Ash is Not underrated if anything she is WAY overated! She is very very beautiful but as far as her acting skills go they are nowhere near rani. I love ash but its true!
Way too borrrrring and does not seem much more than Aish dolled up with costumes and jewellery, I will pass
People can predict what they want but the FACT remains, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai are not Stars of the masses and this film is a sure flop, it is a disaster in the awaiting!
Probably other actors could have saved it but we will never know now!
