Abhishek Bachchan has often featured on the page of RadioSargam.com – in news stories, special features, reviews and more. However we’ve never truly featured a heart-to-heart with the talented actor…until now! Instead of asking him a load of boring pre-planned questions, we decided to give Abhishek the freedom to discuss anything and everything! In this exciting new column, he gives a fascinating insight into family life…
Abhishek Bachchan on his father
I’m often asked questions regarding my relationship with Mr Amitabh Bachchan. The answer has become customary. He’s primarily my father, which is his most important role in my life. He’s undoubtedly my hero too, but that’s his secondary role!
He’s always conducted himself like an ordinary parent at home, never allowing his work to accompany him home. This means our family has seldom reflected on his abilities in the same manner the entire world tries to interpret him. However I am Mr Bachchan’s greatest fan. I have watched all his films…over and over again! Of course I never enjoyed watching him getting beaten by anyone on screen. I think that’s natural because as a child you do not want your father being beaten by anyone. But it was pleasant to know that he would return home safely, out of harm’s way.
Its important to discuss the comparisons sometimes made between Mr Bachchan and myself. I don’t dream of parallels in front of the camera, otherwise I would never be able to perform accurately. Therefore I simply shut off and concentrate on work. Lets not forget Mr. Bachchan has reached the highest levels and remains the best. I know I am not the best, so why bother to even begin comparing?
My metamorphosis from an actor’s son to an actor has been very simple. There is a saying that a fish’s child need not know how to swim. I believe that somewhere down the line acting runs in my blood. I have grown up in this industry. Hence, it is not alien to me. I am quite used to the ways of this industry. I am very comfortable here. I would be at sea if I were doing something else. I have a marvellous support system, fantastic parents to counsel and prop me up.

If any choreographers wanted to portray me like dad, well maybe I might have danced like that in a few of my films. But there was no conscious effort from my side to do it like him. That would be demeaning his work. I am the son of my parents, so I am going to look like my parents. I hope to have some of their acting genes in me too.
I am not trying to play the brooding romantic that father used to play in his early days. At the moment, I do only whatever inspires me to act. That changes everyday. You get up in the morning and you want to play different emotions.
It’s nice that I am working with newcomers because we have all reached the exciting early stages of our careers. It is high time that fresh talent comes up in the industry. Let us see whether we can make a difference. I admit the Bachchan tag will continue to stick on forever. Certain people have even advised me to remove my surname and then just act as Abhishek. But I would never want to do that ever. Who doesn’t want to be related to Amitabh Bachchan and not flaunt it? Anyway, I am now scheduled to work with him. People have felt the jitters working along such a great actor…its not any different for me! Let’s see how I am able to work with him…
WRITTEN BY ABHISHEK BACHCHAN

hi abhishek
it was great reading your article.however you always seem to talk about your father, your relationship with him , how great an actor he is etc etc in the media.why dont you ever mention your mother?there is absolutely no doubt mr amitabh bacchan is one of the best thing to have happened in our cinema.we all know that already!!but so is mrs jaya bhaduri bacchan.in her hey days she was probably the only hindi cinema heroine with a truly healthy ,educated ,middle class background.the kind of cinema she chose shows her sensibility and commitment to good cinema.how come you never mention how proud you feel to have jaya bhaduri as your mother.how come you and your father never boasts of her professional achievements? of whatever little mention she got over the years was off course how great a mother she is and what great sacrifice she made by quitting films at the helm of her career.anyway pls dont take it otherwise.it was just a personal opinion.i wish you and your family all the the success, health and peace.
regards
mahubanti.
You are the best, the best actor indian cinema can count on and my favorite. I have watched every movie of yours.
I am a professional engineer in usa and canada and want you to play a starring role as an engineer having a direct conflict of interest with government actions on a multibillion dollar project where govt does not address properly public safety and concerns for a given multibillion underground gas pipeline project.
Note: I want you to wear a construction engineering cap.
I just read on one website about the winner of screen awards and beleive me i was searching your name in best actor or critic best actor category.I am in awe of you after watching Guru and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.Me and my soon were literally dancing on our seat while watching your dance in JBJ.I work in London and one African lady was asking about you after watching Guru which i felt is a credit to you.Initially like most of us,i thought you were in cine world because of your dad and mom but these two movied proved my wrong. The capability you inherit and the culture you display is astounding.
I was bit taken back by knowing that you did’nt receive the award because i thought you in Guru and Akshaye Khanna in Gandhi-My Father were more deserving then shahrukh.Well you have to cope with such partiality and move on.
I would wish from my heart that you continue to grow and make your parents proud.
I am sure you would win atleast one award for best actor for Guru. There are still neutral people out there……
HI Abhishek, I have followed you from the time you entered the industry with Refugee, and I knew you were going to be very successful. I predicted your future and stood by you when everyone critisized you left right and centre. I always wanted to justify any criticism of you. I also predicted and hoped you get married to Aishwarya soon as you entered, and most people were shocked by my prbophecy, im not sayin Im able to prophecise but had a good intuition. Anyways, you probably gathered that I have become a great fan of yours and there was no doubt that Im a fan of Mr Amitabh Bachcan, hes films and his attitude to life has been so inspirational, I grew up with him as my idol. I dont want to say too much, I like to congratulate you in your success and your performance in GURU and JBJ(whatever the critics say)it was mind blowing, your expressionsa and humour in your performance was really appreciated. well done. Looking forward to Drona, Sarkar Raj, and Delhi 6. Take care. Zaheen.
