Movie Review: Kaminey
Producer: UTV Motion Pictures
Director: Vishal Bhardwaj
Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Amole Gupte
Music: Vishal Bhardwaj
Vishal Bhardwaj’s Kaminey is the much-awaited flick. Reason is not one rather more than one. It has made a special niche in every cinegoer’s heart due to the song, ‘Dhan Te Nan’, Vishal Bhardwaj (whose films are always awaited hugely) and Shahid Kapoor’s avatars in the movie. Vishal’s films are different from the movies, we witness on Bollywood celluloid. Their subjects are unique, dialogues are what pull the crowds, lingo used in the film is loved by all and people carry it back home. And music is the element that makes all of us hum it around. Every portion of his film is very carefully made and scanned by the master of the art named Vishal Bhardwaj. ‘Kaminey’ too travels on the same path. You will be bound to buy the ticket to watch it in theater. Just watch it and you will reach to the conclusion that you have not watched this kind of film so far at the juncture of Hindi cinema.
No doubt in saying that Kaminey is utterly bold, funny in all respects, stark and appears to be unpredictable as well. The film also works for some more reasons and that is Shahid Kapoor (who has shown his marvelous class in this movie) and the song, ‘Dhan Te Nan’ (every time when you bump into this song in the background, you feet start tapping and your heart starts beating faster). Shahid Kapoor does a double role in this movie and his acting skills are simply commendable. The moviegoers have seen him doing serious acting in his earlier movies also but what he portrayed in this flick is what gets you glued to the screens till the final reel.
‘Dhan Te Nan’ has become a star by now. Everyone is found humming it around and it is being played in the parties, discos, cars and everywhere. It is a craze for the young blood. The credit goes to lyricist (Gulzar), Vishal Bhardwaj (musician) and Sukhwinder Singh and Vishal Dhadlani (singers). It is as big as Gulzar’s earlier songs were like ‘Chaiya Chaiya’, ‘Beedi Jalailay’ and ‘Jai Ho’. The simplicity laced with creativity is what spells magic with the listeners.
To watch it and then grasp the goings-on, one has to be very attentive. There are twists in the film, so stay with the movie with opened eyes. It’s really a hatke film, which you will never like to leave it.
‘Kaminey’ talks about a pair of twin broters – Charlie and Guddu (played by Shahid Kapoor). Charlie lisps and Guddu stammers. Both are as different as chalk and cheese. And they can’t stand the sight of each other. Till one fateful rainy night, their lives cross. Guddu comes to know that his love Sweety (Priyanka Chopra) has unsuspectingly put a price on his head whereas Charlie gets involved in a deathly get-rich-quick scheme. Both the brothers now land into the world that is swaddled with drugs, guns and money. They bump into gangsters, rebel soldiers, scoundrel politicians and crooked cops. Thus they now have to run in order to protect themselves, their love and dreams. Amidst all, they realize that what they have is only each other.
Frankly, Vishal’s Kaminey never lets you grasp it instantly. It takes time to enter the world of creative filmmaker. The characters, relationships, setting, tone and the language – all demand time to soak up. But within twenty to thirty minutes, things start falling on you and you are dragged into the world utterly.
At the interval point, the goings-on take a dramatic turn. The sequences after the interval to the climax, Vishal unwrap the things, which simply gets your eyes fixed on the screen. The film lacks a bit on some points like the end is long drawn and it appears violent, which will not be acceptable to the masses.
Vishal Bhardwaj is a master storyteller and a creative filmmaker. This he has shown in this film completely. Making a film like ‘Kaminey’ is a very difficult work to do. But Vishal Bhardwaj has executed it on screen with such brilliance that everyone starts praising while being with it. Dialogues penned by Vishal himself are simply laudable. Screenplay written by Vishal is a creative piece of work. Background score is marvelous. Cinematography by Tassaduq Hussain is first rate. Music arranged by Vishal Bhardwaj himself is catchy and melodious. ‘Dhan Te Nan’ and ‘Pehli Bar Mohabbat’ are really hummable.
Shahid Kapoor shows his class in this film. Enacting a double role and that too with much aplomb deserves hats off. The film might lead him to a superstar status. Priyanka Chopra is mind-blowing. She has playing super innings since last year. This flick may take her at the number one position for which she is undoubtedly a deserving candidate. Amole Gupte is fantastic. Rest of the cast is impressive also.
On the whole, ‘Kaminey’ is a classy work by the super classy filmmaker. The different subject, well-delivered performances by the stars, ‘Dhan Te Nan’ plus other catchy songs and the splendid execution by Vishal Bhardwaj will surely bring the huge audiences to the theaters. It is a definite blockbuster in all respects.
