Movie Review: Luck
Producer: Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision Ltd.
Director: Soham Shah
Cast: Sanjay Dutt, Imran Khan, Shruti Haasan, Mithun Chakraborty, Ravi Kishan and Danny Denzongpa
Music: Salim-Sulaiman
Sanjay Dutt, Imran Khan and Shruti Hassan starrer much awaited action thriller, ‘Luck’ finally hits the screens today. Made utterly on the lines of Hollywood action thriller, the film is laced with hardcore action sequences that will surely make you bite your nails. The action in this movie is what gets you glued to the screen till the end. This type of superb action, though is being made in films, was last seen in Yash Raj banner’s ‘Dhoom 2’. A stylishly made film, ‘Luck’ has a brilliant concept to deliver on the celluloid.
The flick is undoubtedly laced with loads of thrills but does not claim to be high on story. The screenplay is not watertight. Had the writers – Soham Shah and Rensil D’ Silva worked very carefully on the script, the result would have been superb on the lines of narrative. But the due credit goes to director Soham Shah for executing the thrills on the canvas in that manner that appeals to every genre of the movie going audience. So it’s now crystal clear that ‘Luck’ works big on the star power and the stylized thrills.
The film talks about the mafia lichpin Musa (Sanjay Dutt). He has just one obsession and that is to revolutionize the betting industry. Musa thinks that life is a gamble and what better way to skew the odds than play with those with luck on their side. He takes the game of betting to an altogether different level by involving humans as betting objects who are made to fight their own luck to survive. Every year his trusted aide Tamang (Danny) assembles for him in South Africa, 20 participants handpicked from across the globe who have a proven record of extreme luck. Through Musa’s syndicate, betters from around the world put their money on these humans. During the new season, the participants, who are roped in to this, are: Ram (Imran Khan) – a white collar job young guy, who wants to earn big amount to compensate the huge fraud his father was the reason for that – Ayesha (Shruti Hassan) has her own agenda for money – Retd. Col Singh (Mithun Chakraborty), who needs the money desperately for his better half’s operation – Shortcut (Chitrashi), who is a Pakistani camel racer girl and wants to buy a Lexus and Rghav (Ravi Kishan), who is a serial murderer. What heppens when these participants are put into the extremely dangerous life taking game of luck? Who wins amongst them is what forms the rest of the movie.
With the start of the film, the cinegoer is dragged into the world where the bets are put on humans and death-defying stunts are taken place. The train scene in the beginning is the one, which has hardly been witnessed on the canvas of the Hindi films before. You have watched many reality shows, where the participants play the games of death. But the ones, which have been done in this film, seem more dangerous than the reality shows. The sequence of revolver, the jump from the helicopter, the underwater scene with the sharks and the train scene in the climax – are the sequences, which will remain in your memory. The audiences will certainly be clapping on these scenes.
Now come to the flaws of the film. The biggest one is undoubtedly the writing portion, which is feeble. The romantic track has not been given due care, so it appears flabby. The climax should have been winded up when Ram wins the jackpot since it was his utter goal. So why confronts Musa after the wins the game? It appears simply weird. If there was some personal score to settle with Musa, then the sense makes clear otherwise it seems completely senseless. The hospital scene too does not make any sense to the viewers. Shruti’s double role too makes you think, as to what was the need behind?
Soham Shah deserves huge marks for making a stylish film. It shows he has a mind for the visuals. The musical score by Salim-Sulaiman is spongy. ‘Aazma’ is without any doubt is the one, which is pretty hummable. Amar Mohile appeals with the background music. Cinematography by Santosh Thundiyil is of international standards. The sound design too walks on the paths of international standards. For this, Dwarak Warrier collects distinction marks. The big USP of the movie is Allan Amin’s stunts, which is simply brilliant.
The role, which has been given to Sanjay Dutt, is the one that is fit only to him. His macho personality, looks and dialogue delivery are what sit fit to this character. He portrays it marvelously and with ease. Imran Khan is great to watch. He is improving with every coming movie. Shruti Haasan impresses with her performance. Ravi Kishan does well. Mithun Chakraborty delivers a controlled performance. Danny looks fine with his act. Chitrashi does excellent job. Rest of the cast fills the bill also.
On the whole, ‘Luck’ will work big time at the box office due to its novel concept, the thrills of international standards, the stylish look and the star power.

Goher, goher.. unexpectidly quick the review came for this movie. is that a publicity stunt from you?? well! lemme do the review now in simple words.
Movie starts with gambling.. danny buy loteries to every week though he wins nothing and all of a sudden he win’s both the time when Imran sells it to him. wow! what a luck! the train scean where mr dutt blind folds and crosses the tracks, is stupid and dont deserve any applaud. the script tries to copy a hollywood movie (steve austin – stone cold starer) but this one is been screwed. sorry to say. nothing finds interesting in the movie. whether its sunjay dutt or mithun or imran of chakh de girl and huh not to forget shruti is just plain and flat and her diologue delivery is even worse then farha ( tabu’s sister) or mandakini. well the only releif of the move is Ravi Kisan who did an spendid job. never seen him before acting so matuared.
over all the movie is big waste of money. after watching New york, nothing seems to be good as that movie is a master piece (peace)
in short this movie will make not more then 20 cr. in its life time which is half the amount of its cost which is said to be 40 cr.
i only hope Love aaj kal and Kaminey can keep up to the level of New York
