Showman Subhash Ghai’s production, ‘Paying Guests’ directed and written by Parritosh Painter is out to serve you. It features the likes of Shreyas Talpade, Javed Jaffrey, Neha Dhupia, Celina Jaitley, Riya Sen, Sayali Bhagat, Ashish Choudhary, Vatsal Seth, Johnny Lever and Chunky Pandey. Much has been written on this flick, so let’s check it out what it has to offer us…
In Bangkok, at Kiska Miglani’s (Asrani) house, three friends Shreyas Talpade, Javed Jaffrey and Ashish Choudhary stay together as paying guests. The things get disturbed when Ashish’s cousin Vatsal Seth arrives from India to stay with them they end up messing things one drunken night and are kicked off by Kiska. Now the foursome are jobless and homless, so they are on the look out of a rented accommodation that can suit their budget. They at last find one owned by Shreyas’s ex-employer Ballu (Johnny Lever and his better half played by Delnaaz Paul) but there lies a condition that they should be married. So it is decided that Shreyas and Javed will be Ashish and Vatsal’s respective wives. Ballu’s brother Rocky (Chunky) is always a trouble for him, as he wants to get their father’s hotel to his name. The confusion builds up when the four ladies – Neha Dhupia, Celina, Riya and Sayali get involved in some way or the other forms the rest of the film.
Debutante director Parritosh Painter’s Paying Guests appears to be a version of his play titled with the same name. The writing (Parritosh Painter) is simply mundane … no innovation in it at all. The jokes are boring and the dialogues seem poor with no life at all. The climax of the film has been lifted directly from Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s hit yesteryear’s comedy, ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaro’.
Shreyas Talpade impresses with his job of acting. Javed Jaffery displays his histronics. Asish Chowdhary is okay. Vatsal Seth does well but finds hardly any scope. Neha Dhupia looks sexy and does well. Celina Jaitley’s comic timing is impressive. Sayali is average. Rest of the cast is just about okay.
On the whole, ‘Paying Guest’ is a poor entertainer. A lifeless film from all aspects.
