EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI
Yash Raj Banners gave a script written by Aditya Chopra to director Pradeep Sarkar of Parineeta fame in quest of a hard hitting realistic tale. However, this procedure has resulted in a film which has lost out at the very root level of storytelling and uniqueness.
Bollywood has already explored the subject of prostitution in many films. Needless to say that much was expected out of this Pradeep Sarkar-Yash Raj-Rani Mukherjee combo. I particularly feel pity for the director who chose to make a film within a predictable frame of storytelling. Laaga Chunari… turns out to be a dud out of the three films that Pradeep Sarkar is going to make for the Hindi Film Industry’s powerhouse.
The film basically reveals the struggle of a small town girl who goes on to sacrifice her soul for the well being of her family. Badki (Rani) and Chutki (Konkana) live the life to fullest in the sacred shadows of Banaras.
Badki, alongwith her mother Sabitri (Jaya Bachchan) are very protective about Chutki. Things worsen in their family which makes Badki to goto Mumbai to earn a living.
Badki’s biggest challenge is yet to come as she gives it all to keep the lamp glowing back home. She is literally fired from every job that she takes up. Eventually, she gets hooked on to the illicit offer made by an interviewer (Harsh Chhaya) in exchange of a job.
Slowly, Badki makes prostitution her full time job. A career to ‘die’ for, truly. There, Chutki completes her education and shifts to Mumbai to make a living.
