After Don debacle will Sholay suffer too?
Published by  Webmaster  at 07:33:04 pm on October 25, 2006

After the debacle of Don, the film has been critically bashed to kingdom come, worries have stepped in that this might be the same fate in-store for the Sholay remake.

Farhan Akhtar’s remake of the Amitabh Bachchan classic, released last week to huge fanfare, but has proved to be unpopular with many people. Some viewers have liked the up-to-date version but the majority is not happy at all. Shah Rukh Khan’s performance has also been laughed at, with many comparing him as a child, to the might of Amitabh Bachchan.

That put aside, now fans of Sholay are worried that this classic might also have its reputation ruined, this time by Ram Gopal Verma.

Where Don had one character, Sholay has a handful (Jai, Veeru, Takhur, Gabbar, Basanti), giving more scope of error and disliking.

What are your thoughts on this? Are you also worried about the end fate of the remake of Sholay? Do you think that Ram Gopal Verma should abandon the project here and now, or should he continue with it? Will Amitabh Bachchan be able to prove that he is a better Gabbar Singh, than the legendary Amjad Khan? Will Ajay Devgan and Sushmita Sen do well too? Or is it a disaster about to strike? 1. Loved the movie. It’s because SRK did Don, taht you have all these negative remarks. Just look at the boxoffice and audience feed back. Paying audience decides the fate of movie, period.

  3. to what zahir said, i totally disagree with you. compared to box office records for previous movies like veer zaara, kank, main hoon na, and even garam masala, don is doing MUCH MUCH worse at the box office than all those movies. and also that was just the first weekend anyway where it still fell below expectations both as a movie and at box office. this movie was very stylish and had good special effects no doubt but the songs were all out of place srk looked totally awkward as both don and vijay. it was horrible! kareena was even a bigger mistake. that song was a joke! overall this movie just comes nowhere near the original!

  9. it looks like you ared doing negative publicity for don so all guys go to see jem which is faring badly at boxoffice actually i loved don and it has received 3 highest opening overseas .

  11. a fact is a fact that don did a a good business in an opening weekend but it will not click on the box office like mangel pandey remember aamir khan coming out of 5 years but the movie earned and the tagline of the movie was flopped dil ko behlane ke liye khayal achha hai ghalib.

  12. salman on October 26th, 2006 at 9:18 am
  13. DON is a BIGGG failure. Period.

That Don would have earned a huge money was a foregone conclusion – what with all the publicity & curiosity among the new generations. Half the money that Don has earned has come from BIgB fans who went to see the Duplicate Don just to compare it with the one where God starred.

But what SRK & Farhan have lost with this movie is their credibility. People now know for sure that SRK CANNOT act for his life and Farhan is probably just a one-film-wonder.

If they can’t give the new Don an edge even after all this hi-tech production and repeating the cream dialogues & songs from the original Don, what more can one say??? Shame on you.

  15. this article is not about how well don has done at the box office, its how its done critically, and its not that good as the previous Don.

  17. I saw DON last night. I have been a fan of the orginal since i have been a kid, growing up watching that film, memorizing the dialouges.

I saw this new don because i am a fan of the old don.

After watching the first scene where Shahrukh says, Moje iske joothe ache nahin lage. (dont like his shoes)

I didnt know to laugh or cry.??

I heard all the legedary dialouges that Amitabh made famous. Coming from SRK made them cheap.

Overall the film was a joke. This was not a tribute to the old don but an insult!

SRK tried to match Amitabh but failed in every department. I almost felt sorry for him at some scenes, he made a mistake making this film.

It was a waste of time and money watching this new don. Nothing can beat the orginal.

  19. I had seen the orginal when it good released. It was a good effort and typical Amitabh flick with lots of action and tight script by the duo Salim-Javed. The film was a hit mainly due to the hit song.
This film was also inspired from an earlier flick ChinaTown by Shammi Kapoor.
The new Don is more stylish and more suited for today’s audience.
the best part about the new don is that it sticks close to the Don character as opposed to the vijay character.
I don’t think it would have mattered if Farhan had not used the two numbers from the older version and change some of the character and their names. Narang/Ramesh sound too 70’s.

I saw the Amitabh Don again after watching the new Don and found the old version inferior as a thriller. It looked like a B or C grade movie except for Amitabh’ s acting.

I think Farhan has done an amazing job in providing a fast paced thriller with excellent production values. A perfect popcorn movie if one is looking for something different than the ususal musicals and romance being showcased in Bollywood.

  20. Neil on October 26th, 2006 at 4:18 pm
  21. Neil i beg to differ. The new DON is just too slow paced and gets boring after a while. The old DON is not boring and the screenplay is fast-paced thus making it more exciting and can be seen again and again.

Its like watching an old bruce lee film, i dont know if you have seen any, eg, Big Boss or Way of the dragon. If they were to re-make them, they would be better technically and have far greater production values but they would never repeat the MAGIC of the orginals.

THis same logic applies to DON. No matter what techonology you use, no matter how much money is spent on stunts and production values the MAGIC of the old DON will never be repeated. The old DON is a classic that can be viewed again and again.

The new don is a sad remake which has got no magic whatsoever!

  23. well i’ve gut feelin RGV might screw the whole project! wid regards to his earlier flops! n btw is karisma still doing the guest appearance role in Sholay? Anyone???

  25. i thought don was fantastic :D so KOTCH

  26. Safa on October 26th, 2006 at 5:37 pm
  27. Its funny to still hear ppl comparing the old don with the new don and say that the old don was better. have you all gone nuts? you guys think that pran, walking over the tightrope between 2 high rise building with 2 kids in arms and a broken leg was cool. was a thrilling portion. the last scene where they throw around the diary is cool? the amitabh bachchan fight scenes are cool. the new don has a script with uses the best of the old don, removes all the blemishes and polished it to a level which is top notch. the onlything that they cant duplicate was amitabh bachchans stellar performance. but shahrukh did his part very very well and he imparted his own style and came very very close to the Big B.dont let nostalgia rule a perfectly good film. this film is 10 times better than any movie that i have seen in the last 5 yrs. be it Shah rukhs other films, hrithik, amir or anyone.

  28. shine on October 27th, 2006 at 4:29 am
  29. what about killing your enemy with a golf ball?? is that cool…??

It seems to me that you just dont get it.

What seems cheap and illogical in the orginal DON is the reason why the film is a cult! A diary being thrown around is part of that cult.

Seems to me you just dont get it.

In terms of production values this don is far greater. There is no comparion.

But as a movie which keeps the viewer interested and makes the viewer put a smile on the face, the OLD don is a classic.

This new don was just boring.

  31. hey guys..
old & new don cant b compared with each other…
old don was a great hit that time..&…this one is not that bad.i loved the tech & gadgets showed in the picture…
i also liked the twist at d end…
i feel that NEW DON IS FAAAAAAR BETTER THAN OLD ONE except for amitabh factor……

  32. sahil on November 1st, 2006 at 7:57 pm
  33. Sholay will be liked by critics because all the star cast is hindus and no musla is daring to work in a remake. Its that simple!
By the way new DON was a superhit(indian media doesn’t add overseas sales)and a block buster if the cost of the movie was not 80 crores
