Six hours after she gave birth to a bonny, seven-pound baby girl, Bollywood actress Mahima Chaudhary was sharing details of her delivery and the new joy of motherhood exclusively with BT.
She lay propped up in bed in a private room on the 11th floor of a suburban Mumbai hospital, exhausted from the delivery, but glowing with pride. The newborn, understandably , was not being brought before outsiders for fear of the risk of infection. “I don’t know who she looks like, Bobby (husband, architect Bobby Mukherjee) or me, it’s too early to say,” smiled Mahima dreamily.
“This is really a big deal,” she continued. “I know every woman who goes through pregnancy doesn’t make a big deal out of her delivery. For most, it’s just another effortless job. But it isn’t , really. Giving birth is like running a nation! And women who go through it, are truly angels. Today my respect for them has gone up. This is undoubtedly my biggest achievement . The Bollywood rat race, the glamour of my job, everything is insignificant when compared to this joy.”
Her daughter, Mahima revealed, has long fingers and her face has distinct and sharp features. “When I was waiting for the nurse to bring her to me, I was wondering if I would be able to recognise my baby, because all babies look alike. But the doctors told me not to worry, I would be able to identify her because of her long fingers and her pout. My baby has a pout that cannot be missed. Everyone’s saying she’ll be creatively inclined. Maybe she’ll be an artist,” said the actress mother.
Husband Bobby was in the labour room during the delivery. He rushed down from LA on Saturday when he heard Mahima was going to the hospital. Bobby is ecstatic at the birth of their daughter.
This is the first girl child born into his family in 40 years. “For them, it’s really a dream come true,” said Mahima of her in-laws. Has she decided a name for their baby? “Not yet,” she replied, “I don’t believe in astrology, so her name won’t have any astrological reference. And we have decided to wait a few days to let her personality develop. We will decide a name after that.”
