CASTLEFORD is a name not normally associated with the glamorous world of the film industry, but last night some of Bollywood’s most famous actors descended on the West Yorkshire town for the world premiere of the industry’s latest blockbuster.
Hundreds of screaming fans clamoured to see their favourite stars strut down the green carpet, which is one of the longest of its type in the world, at Cineworld for the screening of The Train.
And despite the chilly weather, the three main stars of the film spent almost an hour greeting fans and posing for pictures.
Dressed in a gold sequinned gown, Geeta Basra, one of the stars, enthused about Yorkshire as she made her way down the carpet. She said: “I absolutely love it, but it is cold weather. It’s lovely to be here. It’s an amazing feeling and very surreal.”
Emraan Hashmi, the film’s leading man, said he loved Yorkshire so much he might even consider buying a house here. He added: “It’s beautiful. Beautiful people and beautiful looking women. I could definitely see myself living here.”
The film’s other main actor, Sayali Bhagat, is a former Miss India who is making her acting debut in the movie.
But the evening’s biggest star was undoubtedly Bollywood heartthrob Salman Khan, who stole the limelight when he arrived at the premiere to hysterical screams as fans tried to get his autograph and took photographs. He said: “It’s my first time here. I love it. The film is fantastic.”
There was no sign of Shilpa Shetty at the green carpet, despite rumours that she might attend.
About 500 Bollywood fans braved the weather to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars, including Kabir Bedi.
Julie Lacy, 43, from Castleford, brought her daughter Yasmin, four, to the event. She said: “We both love Indian films. They are just brilliant actors. We have watched quite a lot of Shilpa Shetty films.”
Each year, the International Indian Film Academy chooses a film for its world premiere. The Train is a passionate thriller about the gloomy marriage of a man tempted into adultery.
