Zee Limelight’s ‘Gulaal’ hits the theaters today. Directed by Anurag Kashyap, the movie features Deepak Dobriyal, Kay Kay Menon, Aditya Srivastav, Piyush Mishra, Ayesha Mohan, Jessy Randhawa, Mahi Gill, Pankaj Jha, Mukesh Bhatt, Raj Singh Chaudhary, Abhimanyu Shekhar Singh and Seema Rehmani.
‘Gulaal’ takes instances from Rajputana struggle that was begun by the princely states when India got independence. The movie pours light on the college ragging and reveals about the influence of college politics on the higher level of politics. The enterprise is swaddled with a weak hearted protagonist in the lead role and there is no regular kind of masala (which is normally found in Hindi films) and glamour quotient in the entire movie. The catchy performances come not from the famed actors but from the lesser popular artists of the flick. And one finds the story revolving around many characters gaming on the same plot. This outing has unpredicted reactions from the lead actors in various sequences and shocking depiction.
Dilip (Raj Singh Chaudhary) is dragged into ragging and then locked with a lass named Anuja (Jesse Randhawa) in a room without clothes. He revolts on this because he thinks that he has lost his dignity. On this, Anuja does not do anything but it is Dilip who takes help from the rich Rananjay Singh (Abhimanyu Singh) to fight with the college seniors. Rananjay Singh is a Rajput prince and he opposes the ideologies of his father, the maharaja. The elections in college start and before they take place, Rananjay Singh is murdered. A local leader Dukey Bana (Kay Kay Menon) insists Dilip (who is Rananjay’s roommate) to contest the elections in place of Rananjay. Dilip decides to contest and wins the elections against Kiran (Ayesha Mohan). Dukey now plans to take use of Dilip so that he can fight his own battle to build a Rajputana state and get freedom from the Indian government. Kiran makes use of her feminism to attract Dilip and to take over the powers gained by Dilip and Dilip becomes a vulnerable lover who looses everything to deceitful Kiran. Kiran’s brother Karan is the one who helps her in all the activities and Dilip unknowingly is dragged into a political game where he is helpless.
‘Gulaal’ does not offer anything who are faint-hearted. Nor is it for those viewers who are looking for the escapist cinema.
Now let’s come to the shortcomings. There are so many stories, which run parallel in the movie and due to this the post interval portion takes too long to wind up the things to reach the climax. Dialogues look weird at times. If the movie is of today’s time then why the police has been shown as unreceptive towards all the killings and crimes? The script, though looks different, but does not appeal much. It could have been better. Rajiv Rai’s cinematography is great. Dialogues are difficult to comprehend and appear boring when they come out too much of the mouths of the characters. Music is mundane.
Raj Singh Choudhary, Aditya Shrivastav, Abhimanyu Singh, Piyush Mishra, all are splendid and talented. They leave the popular stars behind in performance. Kay Kay Menon, yes, he has grip on his role. Rest does well too.
‘Gulaal’ is not for everyone. It will appeal to some sections of the audiences like the ones who want a change.
