Good Boy Bad Boy was speculated as the comedy targetted for the youth but the film fails to imbibe the youthful feel in the first place. Good Boy Bad Boy has been directed by Ashwini Chaudhury who had earlier made films like Dhoop (with Gul Panag) and Siskiyaan (with Neha Dhupia). This time he gets an opportunity to direct a film for Subhash Ghai under his Mukta Arts Banner. The film stars Emraan Hashmi, Tusshar Kapoor, Isha Shravani and Tanushree Dutta in the main lead.
The film fails to inject any comic feel during its course of narration and the art direction is simply awkward. The concept is age old and not retreated properly. A clear reflection of films like Waqt Hamara Hai, Khiladi etc can be seen in Good Boy Bad Boy.
The film revolves around these two boys Rajan and Raju. They are two entirely different characters. Good boy Rajan Malhotra (Tusshar Kapoor) and Bad Boy Raju Malhotra (Emraan Hashmi) play the centric characters, as described by the title of the movie. One is colourful, naughty and fliritious while the other is an innocent nerd.
Rajan Malhotra is a well-known bookworm. He is a complete book-lover, forever lost in studies. He is not part of any other extra curricular activities which disturb his parents a lot. Rajan is ignorant of his surroundings and studies with his head down all the time. Rajan is a silent lover of Tanushree Dutta, who is an extrovert.
If Rajan’s parents (Rakesh Bedi, Navni Parihar) feel for his serious nature then Raju Malhotra’s parents (Anang Desai, Prabha Sinha) are worried about their son’s care free nature. Raju basic mantra is to stay away from books and classrooms. He indulges in college bettings and keeps hitting on the girls of the college. He holds a soft corner for Isha Shravani, an introvert.
The real confusion begins in the college where they study, as things mix and match and both of them replace each other. The cause of replacement is their identity cards which have their names printed as R. Malhotra.
The film is not humourous and works very hard to make your cheeks get a few dimples. The idea is under developed and the narration lacks crispness. The dialogues are repeated and impactless. The screenplay is loose and leaves you with a film that has absolute loose ends.
As for the music of the film, Himesh Reshammiya teams up with Subhash Ghai for the third time after the superhit 36 China Town and the super flop Shaadi Se Pehle. Himesh croons almost every track of the film (except Dard-E-Dil). The music of this film is a let down as melody lacks in every track of the film. There is nothing innovative going into each of the songs.
Acting wise, Emraan Hashmi lightens up the screen whereas Tusshar darkens the screen. Emraan is adorable and will be liked for his acting but Tusshar fails to capture the essence of his character and lets down with his acting. Tanushree Dutta looks like a item girl amidst the hullabaloo. Isha Shravani needs to be a lot more expressive. Paresh Rawal is okay. Kabir Sadanand is good and expressive.
Overall, Good Boy Bad Boy is a film which can be watched for a few laughs but on the whole it lacks the features to be a complete entertainer.
