Slumdog Millionaire all over on the Oscars night sweeping 8 statuettes…
Slumdog Millionaire is the one movie, for which the expectations to win the Oscars were very high after winning the Golden Globes Award. Sunday evening, the expectations proved true and the film swept eight awards at the 81st Annual Academy Awards in Los Angeles.
The film had been selected for ten nominations in nine categories (it had two nominations in Best Song category), out of which the flick earned eight categories including Best Film, Best Director, Best Music Score, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Song, Best Sound Mixing and Best Adapted Screenplay. The one category that the movie lost was the Best Sound Editing.
When the award for the Best Film was announced and the producer Christian Colson came on stage to collect the statuette, the entire team of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ from Dev Patel, Frieda Pinto, Anil Kapoor, Irrfan Khan, co-director Lovleen Tandon, director Danny Boyle, writer Simon Beaufoy, music composer A R Rahman, the three sound mixers to the child actors joined him on the stage.
The producer uttered the speech by accepting the award, saying, “Thank you so much to the Academy. As you can see, our film was a collaboration between hundreds of people. I’m so happy that so many of them could be with us here tonight to share this moment.”
Anil Kapoor was so much overjoyed and held the Oscar statuette up in his hands when Colson passed it to him.
Earlier on this world’s mammoth and much popular awards’ ceremony, the music maestro A R Resul Pookutty shared his Oscar with two colleagues for Sound Mixing. While accepting the statuette, Resul expressed his views, “I come from a country and a civilization that (has) given the universal word. That word is preceded by silence, followed by more silence. That word is "Om." So I dedicate this award to my country. Thank you, Academy, this is not just a sound award, this is history being handed over to me.” The Oscar fiesta was filled with a breath-arresting performance from the music genius A R Rahman who trilled a medley of his two nominated tracks ‘O Saya’ and ‘Jai Ho’, which enthralled the audiences hugely.
Hugh Jackman hosted the show, who sang the song and danced as well.
