Q-How does it feel to win this award?
A- It’s great and a rare honour to be nominated as the best lead actress in Deepa Mehta’s ‘Heaven On Earth’ in the Genie Awards. Quite excited about the way my career is going now. The Genie Awards are usually for Canadian films. But Deepa Mehta being a Canadian has been a contender with the award. The film has also been nominated for best original screenplay. I’m looking forward to the awards on April 4th.
Q- You had won other awards too…
A- I had also received the Silver Hugo Award for best actress in the Feature Film Competition section at the 44th Chicago International Film Festival.
Q- What do you feel about the film?
A-The film broke my heart. It is the story of a real woman. My perception towards life and women has changed completely after doing this film. My respect for the woman fraternity has grown ten fold. We often ignore such issues but not any more. I met so many women who have been victims of domestic violence and it hurts terribly how women bear so much. I was completely shattered. It took me some time to come out of it.
Q-Your views on domestic violence…
A- I realized that domestic violence is such a huge universal problem only after doing the film. I was traumatized while shooting for the film. I thought such things are a fragment of someone’s imagination. It was the most humiliating experience of my life. I hope the government makes the film tax free.
