Movie Review: Billu
Producer: Red Chillies Entertainment
Director: Priyadarshan
Cast: Irrfan Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Lara Dutta
Red Chillies Entertainment, ‘Billu’ (earlier titled Billu Barber) releases today starring Irrfan Khan, Lara Dutta and Shah Rukh Khan in the lead. The much-awaited flick is directed by none other than Priyadarshan. Set in a hamlet, ‘Billu’ is the latest offering by the brilliant filmmaker Priyadarshan.
This story has been attempted earlier to make films on like in Malyalam (Kadha Parayumbol) and in Tamil (Kuselan). The saga of ‘Billu’ is about the freindship of a superstar and an ordinary barber, who runs a salon. The lumionous storyteller Priyadarshan has delivered the simple story with aplomb on the silver screen in a simplistic manner that catches your attention and heart the moment the reels open. Don’t get it wrong that the flick is not laced with any kind of swanky look, it does have glamour quotient in plenty. The main protagonist’s friend is a superstar of the film indsutry, this conecpt is well depicted on the celluloid and catches you in full by getting you glued to your seats. Why, because the presentation is so immaculate that you are bound to be with till the end.
The film is much appealing from all respects and what makes it more scrumptious is the finale portion when the superstar harks back to his childhood friendship with the barber and recalled the deep amity they both shared together. The movie will surely pinch your soul from the bottom. It is undoubtedly Shah Rukh Khan and Irrfan Khan’s superb work out of their career. You will be the witness of this comment, when you will be watching the film on screen.
‘Billu’ is a story of a down to earth village barber, Billu (Irfaan Khan). A man of principles, he is not willing to give up his values come what may even if it means his children are thrown out of the school or his earnings taking a beating. His better half Bindya (Lara Dutta) understand him fully and completely stands by him during every tough time, he sees in life. Billu is struggling a lot to earn for his family. Amidst all, a film unit comes to his village for shooting and with the unit, the superstar Sahir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) too comes along. Sahir is Billu’s childhood friend. When the villagers get to know that Sahir Khan is Billu’s childhood friend, everyone’s behaviour suddenly changes towards him. All and sundry start respecting him. But now every villager wants Billu to help them meet the superstar. Whenever Billu tries to apprach him, he fails to do so. With this the villagers start getting more restless and an already in trouble Billu has to face their additional wrath. Shah Rukh Khan’s track is fantstic. The three specially churned out songs picturised on Kareena, Deepika and Priyanka, are wonderful to watch for. And very mastrely, Priyadrashan has put them into the narrative.
The writing is simply brilliant. Story penned by Priyadarshan is dexterous. Mushtaq Sheikh and Priyadarshan both put their minds together to create such a classy screenplay to curn out a movie on that one automatically starts applauding while being with the flow of the movie. Priyadarshan has very skillfully handled the relationships between the characters. With the main character Billu, he shows his adept mind, as he has managed to portray it on screen with such a conviction that you get invloved with him. Priyadarshan depicts with this film that he is equally master to make serious and sensitive films, as he is in making comedies. Manisha Korde pens down splendid dialogues.
Pritam impresses with spongy music. The promotion of the songs had been started prior to the film’s release. And this generated marvelous outcome for the enterprise. ‘Mar Jaani’ and ‘Love Mera Hit’ are the ones, everyone is humming around these days. V. Manikandan’s cinematography is crispy.
The leading man of the movie Irrfan Khan deserves huge marks since he carries the whole film on his shoulders. He is the actor, who should be raved about all the time. The man acts through his sparkling and deep eyes. He shows his real class in the film. Shah Rukh Khan too ignites the screen with his acting and presence in this outing. Lara Dutta does a meaty performance. Rajpal Yadav is as usual appealing. Rest of the cast registers impacts also.
On the whole, ‘Billu’ is classy in every sense of the word. Without any fault, the film is what you carry home along. The movie leaves a sweet impression on your mind and that is its success.
