Movie Review: Dev D
Producer: UTV Spot Boy
Director: Anurag Kashyup
Cast: Abhay Deol, Mahi Gill and introducing Kalki Koechlin
Music: Ami Trivedi
UTV Spot Boy’s DEV D is finally out in cinemas. Directed by Anurag Kashyup, the film stars Abhay Deol, Mahi Gill and introducing Kalki Koechlin in the central roles. The eralier versions of ‘Devdas’ (based on the classic novel of Sarat Chandra) and this new Dev D differ from each others. K.L.Saigal, Dilip Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan’s films were up to the original novel but this one of Anurag Kashyup is contemporary. In this flick, we find Dev having drugs and vodka. Paro, in this film, sends Dev her nude picture using e-mail and later on wants him to bed with her whereas Chanda indulges in phone sex. Kashup’s Paro and Chanda are bold and mutinous.
No harm at all to make a movie on someone’s interesting subject in your own style, but when you go far ahead and cross all limits, you fall falt. The same happened with Anurag Kashyup in ‘Dev D’. The writing lacks steadiness, which is why it cannot hold the viewer’s attention.
Dev (Abhay Deol) is the son of a rich industrialist. He is packed off to London by his strict father who senses his growing fondness with Paro (Mahi), a girl from a less affluent family than theirs. When Dev returns from London becoming a grwon guy, his love for his childhood sweetheart is in fact much multiplied. But he does not have permission to tie the knot with her because of the difference in cast and status. While Dev is sent to Delhi, Paro is married off to a rich but aged widower who has kids. Dev goes into severe depression and digs deep into drugs and alcohol. Laced with an escapist instinct and massive ago, he begins the aimless search for his lost love. Amidst all, he bumps into Chanda (Kalki). Next follows his journey to self destruction…
The script, by Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane, has no potential at all. The moviegoer already knows what will be unfolding on the screen while entering the theater. But one thing is sure that the cinegoer must have a thought in mind that how will Anurag Kashup be presenting the contemporary Dev D on celluloid? The direction is not up to the mark but there are some sequences, which hold values like the ones:
· Between Dev and Paro in the beginning.
· Paro’s decision to marry with an aged man.
· The MMS scandal of Chanda.
Ami Trivedi’s music registers impacts. Rajeev Rai’s cinematography is appealing.
Abhay Deol plays his cards well and impresses. Mahi appeals and Kalki too attracts with acting. Rest of the cast is okay.
On the whole, ‘Dev D’ is lackluster in all manners. You may watch it only for one time. But it is recommended to stay way from it.
RS Rating: 1/5
