I am honestly sick and tired for the entire industry drooling over AR Rahman. His achievement is nothing short of great, but lets not take away the achievements India has had in the past. Frankly, I am disgusted at the fact that most of the Indian media doesn’t even bother to check its facts before printing the news. It is disrespectful, inappropriate, and frankly quite insulting to Mr. Rahman as well.
The first Indian to win a Golden Globe was the Producer/Director Mr. V. Shantaram, for "Do Ankhen Barah Haath" which won the Golden Globe, for the special Samuel Goldwyn Award in the year 1959. V. Shantaram is one of the most highly regarded directors in the history of Indian cinema. He was not only a master craftsman and technological innovator, but also an artist of conscience who dedicated himself to using the film arts as a means to further social causes. is one of the most highly regarded directors in the history of Indian cinema. Yes, we have made films of that caliber way back in 1959 – something that Aamir Khan has been trying very hard to achieve.
So please lets stop the nonsense of "first Indian to win a Golden Globe", and just appreciate Mr. Rahman for bringing such honor to the film industry.

Technically, Samuel Goldwyn Writing Awards is not a Golden Globe Award.
Just because it used to be presented at Golden Globes event, doesnt mean it is a Golden Globe award.

Before lashing out at everyone, get your facts right!
Well.its really easy to release a statement with out any evidence………….I tried searching evidence for your statement all over internet…..But I couldn’t find a single source justifying ur argument…..I agree dat Shantaram is pioneer of Indian cinema……..Try updating urself b4 criticizing……..
As Aravind mentioned, the Samuel Goldwyn Award is not part of the Golden Globes and is merely presented at the same ceremony. And if you note, DABH was ‘nominated’ for the award implying that there was no list of nominees from which DABH won. A simple Google search reveals all so be mindful of making a statement lest you be proved wrong instantly.
Of course, this has no bearing on the genius of V Shantaram.
I hope we see an update to your post.
Just shows that your an anti-arrahman from the way your talking.
Get a clear picture first before showing ur anti-arrahmanism into the,
world wide web.
instead of those last three links mentioned… put this page
looks like he made a bigger fool of himself.. lol
look who is misinformed and now :p hehe.. LMAO
Samuel Goldwyn was part of the Golden Globes until 1963. Thats like saying that the Academy Honorary Award won by Satyajit Ray is not really an Oscar award. It was an Oscar, and this was a Golden Globe.
Get your facts right. Your statements are so baseless. Did you ever bothered to check http://www.goldenglobes.org? “Do Ankhen Baara Haath” was nominated for Best Foriegn Language Film under the aka title “Two Eyes, Twelve Hands”, but never won the award. Check the link http://www1.goldenglobes.org/browse/film/25731 yourself. Now you know who is a misinformed “whatever”!
Hello Shobit, There is no record of “Do Ankhen Barah Haath” or
V. Shantaram winning the award. Please visit the official website of the Golden Globes and check if there is a mention of “Do Ankhen Barah Haath” in the list of winners in 1959. If you don’t find it there, then please
remove this article.
” Two Eyes, Twelve Hands
1 Nomination(s) | 0 Win(s)
1959
Samuel Goldwyn International Award
The Country of India ”
this is what the official website of the golden globes says . so if we keep aside arguments about whether sgi award is a gg at all , still it was only nominated it didn t win . so technically arr is the first .
accept ur ignorance shobit . also do ankhen barah haath isn t the only nominated film from india , there were gandhi [ which also won ] , monsoon wedding , salaam bombay , of course much later on . if you can argue based on a nomination then even mira nair is eligible to be included in it .
Hi shobhit, hopefully you have realized your huge blunder. Now its time to apologize to India and have the basic courtesy to remove this article. Unless of course, your ego and hatred for Rahman’s music stops you from doing the right thing!
If Author, u r still unsure what u have written, then plz go to the official website of Golden Globe Awards that is,
http://www.goldenglobes.org/browse/year/1959
And Reader….Plz Remember…It was a publicity Stunt by the author to Promote this Website…Thats It……
Hi Shobhit,
You are basically alleging that the Indian media is not credible. The fact is a majority of the media do their homework before bringing in any sort of news. The Samuel Goldwyn Writing Award (SGWA) won by V.Shantaram was just another category of award under that name which was presented to him on the same floor and during the same ceremony as that of the Golden Globe awards. So do get it right as the media is never that big a fool.
hey Shobit
Why dont you just paste the link of wherever you got the information that rahman isnt the first golden globe winner.
If you dont have any then…..SHUT THE HELL UP
I guess Shobhit is right,
I dont understand why GG Awards website does not show this information. There is a discrepancy between what is reported on the GG website and other sources like IMDB .. e.g. if you search for the winners mentioned for Samuel Goldwyn in 1959, at other sources for those movies either the year is different or the movie is mentioned as nominated for SG award or their are only nominees that year and no award .. which is confusing
And since GG award website has the listing for Samuel Goldwyn award their should not be a doubt as to whether it is a GG award.
Take a look at this article in times of india and screen magazine which says DABH had indeed won a price that year. Also few reviews talk about the movie winning the award.. also
