Breaking all the past records, Mira Nair’s The Namesake has made it to the US top 20 as it grossed $1.1 million in only its second weekend of limited release.
The movie expanded from six to 41 theatres and earned more than $700,000 for a strong $17,440 per location.
The Indian-American drama will widen to over 100 theatres this Friday.
“The film entered the North American Top 20 in only its second weekend of limited release.
‘Monsoon Wedding’ did not reach the Top 20 until its fourth weekend in 98 theatres and ‘Bend It Like Beckham’ reached the Top 20 in its third weekend in 46 theaters” Gitesh Pandya, who is working with production company Fox Searchlight, said.
“The Namesake also broke the ten-year-old opening week box office record at the Paris Theatre in NYC with a sensational $101,929 in its first seven days” he said.
The movie was released on March 16 in the United States and Canada including in the cities of Boston, Chicago, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Seattle and Vancouver and added theatres in the existing markets of New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Toronto.
From this Friday the movie will open at an additional 69 theaters including in Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Miami, Minneapolis, Montreal, New Jersey and St. Louis.
