Movie Review: Jumbo
Film Critic: Goher Iqbal Punn
Producer: Percept Pictures Company
Animation films emerge as a new trend on Bollywood celluloid. You have been witnessing it for last few years. Yes, they impress, if made creatively. They are targeted at the kids, but if the adults like to watch it, then they have to do it while keeping the kid inside them alive. Whether the film is an animated one or a live, what grips the viewer is its storyline. Percept Pictures’ Jumbo tries too to grip the audience. Few years back, ‘Hanuman’ attracted the viewers and then some others came even the Yash Raj Films’ recently released Roadside Romeo hit the screens, but they all could not arrest the viewers’ breath.
Jumbo tells the story of a baby elephant, who dreams of following Yudhveer, his absent father. He decides to go to search his father. While he is on search, he comes across a kindly elephant trainer, a hyperactive messenger bird and a female elephant, who becomes his sweetheart later. Afterwards, Jumbo becomes a war elephant and then moors the belts to defend his kingdom against the evil opponents.
The work of animation is superb but it is not of the standards of Hollywood (as we have watched The Lion King and Shrek). The storyline is attractive but not extraordinary, as it depicts the typical Hindi movie type since there is revenge, romance, emotions and action…all is there in one pack. The song choreographed by Ahmad Khan is classy. The voiceovers by Akshay Kumar, Dimple Kapadia, Rajpal Yadav and Gulshan Grover, spell magic.
On the whole, ‘Jumbo’ will entice the viewers, as it is a spongy kind of a film. Although it is targeted at the kids but it is recommended for the adults of all ages as well.
