Movie Review: Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi
Film Critic: Goher Iqbal Punn

Producer: Aditya Chopra/Yash Chopra (Yash Raj Films)
Director: Aditya Chopra
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Vinay Pathak
Music: Salim-Sulaiman

After giving hits, mega hits and blockbusters in his career, King Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) now emerges with his latest offering, ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’. The character, he is playing in the flick, appears the most challenging role, he has done so far on Bollywood celluloid. Shah Rukh Khan continues his association with Yash Raj Films. Earlier in most of their films, Khan enacted in romantic roles and the movies were set in Switzerland, London or other locales of Europe. But ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ is utterly different. It’s not set in the UK or any other European countries nor does it showcase the lavish sets or the stars clad with the designers’ clothes, etc. It’s a simple yet impressive film to rave about.

Khan delivers his prowess in this fun-filled entertainment venture laced with a universal story line comprising of love, drama, emotions and a predictable happy ending. Undoubtedly, the flick is a complete entertainer but lengthy stretched to 2 hours and 45 minutes. The movie talks about one such ordinary man, who lives in Amritsar and how his life undergoes a 360 degree change the moment he bumps into a beautiful girl.

The film is the saga of an ordinary couple played by Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma who find true love in the backdrop of a dance competition called ‘Dancing Jodi’. Surinder Sahni (Shah Rukh Khan) works for Punjab Power in Amritsar. He falls in love with a gal Taani (Anushka Sharma), who is the daughter of Surinder’s school master. She is flamboyant, a fun-loving vivacious lass who loves to be a dancer but finally knows the fact that her father likes her to get married with a man Surinder Sahni who is much older than her. They tie the nuptial knot and there begins a not so happy married life due to the vivid fact of a huge age gap. Amidst all, Taani gets to know about a dance reality show, ‘Dancing Jodi’. She wishes to join it. Since the show is a couple dance reality show, so if she wants to join she has to do with her hubby who lacks in good looks and style, which the other men have in the contest.

Surinder comes to know that his wife is very keen to participate in the show but cannot due to his ordinary get-up and style. Thus he decides to undergo a major change and even changes his identity to Raj Kapoor. Raj offers Tani to be her partner in the show, the enthusiast Taani accepts the offer. Raj’s looks and style help Taani fall in love with him. She does not know that Raj is actually her husband Surinder. Later on, the fact clears to Taani, who then confesses her guilt to her ever-so-loving husband.

The story and the script are good and catch the viewer’s attention. Aditya Chopra has penned with brilliance. Aditya Chopra is the director of this venture and direction wise, he seems just about okay. Salim-Sulemain’s composition needs to be applauded. The cinematography is crispy.

Shah Rukh Khan delivers the finest performance. You love to watch him in the role of a simple man and then a guy with stylish looks. The debutante Anushka enacts superbly. She has potential to rise in the Hindi film scene. Vinay Pathak is great to watch. The rest of the cast does justice as well.

On the whole, ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ will find a good opening. It’s a magnum-opus by Yash Raj Films and another success feather to their camp.

RS Rating: 4/5

  1. Hi Goher,
i really dono where did that one star or yours missed and you havn’t told the story well either. well, i’ve seen the movie and i dont see any chance where it can miss any star from five. its a must 5/5 movie. brilliant. exellent, a solid winer! SRK again prooved it that he’s the ONE. the second half is abt a dance competetion but they did not focus much on the dance but the story and people really dont care how good the dance is what all they care is how the story moves.. i’m really surprised that even today they can make movies like this. hat’s off to SRK Aditya and Anushka and offcourse vinay after watchind Dasvidaniya one gota see him in Rab ne.. he’s really a star. but ranvir is wasted i really dono why he accepted that role but as for Vinay You are macho man? keep it up. well after Rab ne i really don’t think Gajini stands a fair chance to over take Rab ne.. but Amir best of luck. all you people out there go watch Rab ne in theater..

  3. Crap storyline… How can u take us for granted.. srk falls in love with anushka .anushka marries him due to sympathy they start livig a bore life .srk plans to impress his wife he goes for a makeover he participates in a dance show with his wife .his wife does not recognise him she thinks it sum other dashing guy she plans to run away with him. in the climax she realises its srk only some rona dhona and the end !!
    Aditya-srk’s worst movie till date.

  4. Surender Sahni on December 12th, 2008 at 11:26 pm
  5. The movie belongs to Anushka Sharma’s bubbly performance. You can’t take your eyes off her for a minute as she dances and emotes like a veteran actress. She even manages to steal a couple of scenes from SRK. Talking of SRK, he is brilliant as Surinder Sahni but fails to impress as Raj. Age is catching up big time with SRK; those wrinkles can quite clearly be seen in close-up shots. Vinay Pathak as SRK’s side-kick manage to evoke a few laughs.

Overall, RNBDJ disappoints with faulty story line and dire execution. But some light entertaining moments make it a decent watch.

  15. This is one of the worst movie i have ever seen. There is no soul in the film, Aditya chopra has taken viewers for granted.Anybody can make comparison between 2 shahrukh except his stupid wife. shahrukh has overacted in stylish one character. The film was looking like an Tv serial show, which was never ending. There are endless flaws in the film. If a director like aditya chopra takes 8 years to write this kind of script, there shoud be so many minute details, without any stupid flaws, which even any ordinary man can describe.I went with my whole family with huge expectation, but was very disappointed. Only on RS it’s 4 star and at any other site is only 2 star what is absolutely right in judging !!

  17. Okk no offense to ne1..but i just saw the movie n theres nothing to rave abt the movie. SRKs worst performance till date and there were times wen he was so annoying tht it was hard to endure..for an Adi chopra movie, its a dissapointment, there were too many faults, boring n they stretched it too much but Anushka was good for a 1st timer, really impressive, and there were few funny scenes..esp the end credits wit the japan pics..other thn tht the movie was horrible…i wont say omg dont waste urtime by watching it, watch it n make ur own decision..i hate every critic who say dont watch the movie, thts not right we have brains n we are entitled to make up our mind n guyz plzz dont watch a movie on the basis of a review…

  21. 4/5??? its best at 2/5

saw the film last night. There was no emotional connect with the audiences. Accepted its funny. But overall it was lifeless.

    1) how comes she does not recognise her husband???

    2) When she falls in love with Raj, (so what) he is the same person, why was he getting stressed for??? Its not like they are 2 different people.

    3) how can a shy nerd act all stylish????

    4) Raj was pure over-acting at its best

Overall the film was a big dissapointment for me. The story just had no soul…
