This POW drama stars pure actors and not stars in the lead roles, with no single heroine. 1971 is directed by Ramanand Sagar’s (Ramayan) grandson, Amrit Sagar. Manoj Bajpai is lying low at the box office and Bhojpuri superstar Ravi Kishan is hoping to revive his luck in Hindi films post Big Boss. The maker of this film, debutante director Amrit Sagar too is hoping to strike it big with a subject that has not worked out in Bollywood in the recent times.
Surprisingly, 1971 stands apart from the regular Pak-bashing stuff that has hit the screens off late. The theme of 1971 is related to India and Pakistan but it is not a war loaded film. The film begins from 1977 and throws light on Indian defense personnel who long to be free, pine to return to their motherland.
The story revolves around a group of Indian war prisoners across the border that have been languishing in Pakistani jails, leading a life of anonymity. They break free and start their journey towards their nation. Major Suraj Singh [Manoj Bajpai], Captain Jacob [Ravi Kishan], Subedar Ahmed [Chitaranjan Giri], Captain Kabir [Kumud Mishra], Flight Lt. Ram [Manav Kaul] and Flight Lt. Gurtu [Deepak Dobriyal] decide to make the most daring escape from a Pakistani camp to the Indian border.
Well Done Bollywood! Bollywood deserves full marks of continuing the trend started in 2006 of making quality films. Box Office success is certainly not a true indicator of quality. In just about 3 months of 2007, we have seen so many quality films belonging to diferent generes such as Guru, Black Friday, Eklavya, Honeymoon Travels, Traffic Signal,Nishabd and now 1971. We should not be disappointed about the B.O fate of most of these films rather we should be proud that finally our film industry is progressing.
